Most smartphones these days have a Mobile Hotspot in it, some don’t and if you want to surf the web from anywhere you’ll need an internet stick. WIND Mobile has added a new stick to their lineup, the Huawei E366 can be yours for $99 no-term. WIND says that you’ll experience “blazing fast 4G download speeds of up to 21.1 Mbps in our HSPA+ coverage area and 14.4 Mbps download speeds in all other areas.”

It’s not even a phone. You’re comparing apples to oranges (pun fully intended).

I couldn’t agree with you more
He’s definitely the pure definition of an internet troll. Just constantly spewing nonsense, and probably counting all the thumb downs as badges of honor. I bet he doesn’t even own an iPhone either.

I’m curious how well this new stick will perform in HSPA+ coverage areas. It’s certainly a more sane choice in Ottawa than other 3G data sticks from Robellus, and certainly better than the extremely overpriced Rogers LTE service/stick.

Does Wind have the 14.4 Mbps network speed everywhere or even 21.1 Mbps? How is Mobilicity and the others?

Just tried this in the KW area and “blazing fast” means 7.4Mbps…not bad, but nothing spectacular either.

What is the download cap on Wind’s mobile sticks? and do they throttle it or cap it? If throttled to what speed?
Thanks

First 5GB unthrottled, after that they reserve the right to slow you down when there’s possible congestion on the network. I’m not sure what speed they throttle down to.

after throttling you will get reduced (up to) 2G speeds (~100kbps)

Anyone know where they have 21mbps coverage as opposed to 14.4mbps as they mention?

All existing towers on already upgraded to 14.4mbps but this upgrade requires a hardware upgrade to the towers. Some have been upgraded, others will soon be.

It is great until you leave your little zone when you start getting hammered by overages. Outside the little zone is the only time I would ever need this thing.

It’s expanding all the time. Wind’s cell sites were built 4G and LTE ready right from the get go and as it’s just a case of a software update it shouldn’t take too long for the entire network to be upgarded.

@Jim. I use WIND data stick & there are no overages. By default it does not work anywhere outside WIND Zones. And they are not tiny for my business in GTA and in Ottawa its perfect.

I picked one up last night, was not able to connect to any web pages. Data speed of 15 kbps. I called and spoke with them on the phone 3 times. 1st time they didn’t ask my info, just said restart computer and restart device. Didn’t work. 2nd time they said something was wrong on my account and they would fix it. 3rd time they said Oh the reason it didn’t work the last two times was a network outage, it will be fixed in two hours. Three hours later, same speed. Wind’s network in Parkdale is a joke. M6K2J7

Its probably not upgraded yet. Oh and don’t call in anymore. Try using the online resources to get customer service. (Much better)

Honestly, i’m getting tired of this “4G” marketing technique. It’s like when people said that their gaming console was 16-bit instead of 8-bit. The product itself matters more than those marketing gimmicks. The ITU should NOT have caved in to providers’ demands.
So when LTE Advanced and WirelessMAN-Advanced, the TRUE 4G, get released, what are they going to call it? Rogers already says its Basic LTE is “beyond 4G”. See how marketing can confuse users?
Yeah, i get that WIND is doing this to defend its network, while Robelus, Mobilicity and Vidéotron are calling themselves “4G”. Seems logical. Then again, it just repeats the cycle.

As cool as this is, I don’t see much point considering the 5GB softcap. The speeds after that are pathetic.
I would gladly pay an extra 5-10 to make that softcap increase up to 20GB or so.

With their faster “4G”, they should be able to provide more bandwidth to customers. They could also do like T-Mobile and offer different plans, like 1 GB full speed or 10 GB full speed, with a throttle after. Personally, i find the 1 GB and 3 GB plans from WIND are useless. All plans should be unlimited slow data.

If they come out with a faster mobile hotspot modem I would consider it.
