This $10/month 100MB plan is making the rounds over at Rogers and their sub-brands. Fido will officially make this plan available on August 3rd (you can expect Rogers too as well, possibly Chatr). The internal doc states that this can be added to all plans and devices, but not BlackBerry devices. Fido notes that this is perfect for the Nokia C6 or the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Q, plus you’ll be charged $5 for every additional 100MB of data.
Update: It should be also known that the $10 100MB plan is nothing incredibly new. TELUS has had this for about a year on a “Data Lite” plan too
(Thanks tipster!)
OH WOW WHAT A GREAT AMOUNT OF DATA AT SUCH A LOW PRICE! ONLY $55/MONTH FOR NOT EVEN A GIG! OH YAY! OH WOOF! SO WONDERFUL!
And Fido, as a discount carrier, launches this after Koodo has $25/2GB/month and a Data Saver option? What were they thinking!?

Dear Fido,
For 10 bucks, I expect at least 250 Megs and a plan that is compatible with Blackberry devices. Please be an Alpha, not a lap dog.

What you mean is $5/month for 100 MB? That would be a little better, but still very costly nevertheless. What happened to 6GB for $30/month, which was equivalent to $5/GB? That’s at least better.
Fido’s moto is “giving low prices a good home”. But why let competitors have better prices?

It about having the lower cost option. Yes the 6GB plan seems worth it when u split it up($5/GB) but you can’t split the data with other people. So you pay $30 on top of ur talk and text and add-ons which comes to about $60-$70 a month which is quite pricey for a cell phone bill. Now you can just pay $10 xtra instead which is a savings of $20 on ur cell phone bill since cell phone bills should cost less than $45/month(by looking at other countries).
Even if you tether on your phone, the speed is quite slow and plus there is wifi in many places now(McD, Starbucks, your workplace..etc..)
If Fido had 10Gb for $50, would get that?($100 phone bill a month?)

Lower cost options are great but that doesn’t explain why they sell 1 gig for both $5 and $100. The costs are the same to them, this is price gouging pure and simple.

As a heads up, the “i want my LTE!” website Rogers says :
“Nothing should get in the way of Canadian access to LTE. […] Policies that slow wireless advances would slow Canadian innovation, harming our growing digital economy. The fact is, any policy that limits LTE is a recipe for leaving Canada behind the rest of the world.”
The problem is, Rogers charges too much for HSPA+ and LTE Internet access! So who exactly is going to sign up for an overpriced service?

Moblicity and Wind and fine if you’re in your home city but it’s highly expensive otherwise. They charge per *k* outside of major cities. Ridiculous!

This has got to be a joke. These carriers are so out of touch it isn’t funny. Fido: Wind is coming to my town soon and you will be kicked to the curb. 30,000+ students move through KW annually…guess who will be very aggressively targeting these students? Hell, they won’t even have to try hard. They’ll just show them your data prices and marketing material the point will be made for them.

jr you wait on wind.. think of all the angy students when the phone will not work indoors and look at bobby on his chatr phone, with data full bars bobby? yes we know so.. Wind is so far behind the 8 ball on this. Set up shop and disappoint thats the wind motto.
Jabronied, outsourced and now contracted!
since chatr works on all of the handsets well.. yeah you know.. BAM!

Not only are you stuck on AWS frequencies, you can only use your unlimited data inside the city zone. Sorry, but I drive cross-Canada and love my internet radio. I’ll be sticking with a carrier that exists outside of major cities.

@ Harris I would like to see you even download 1TB = 1024GB on Wind or Mobilicity, they cancel your line before you even notice, if they don’t throttle you after a couple of GB’s, I have unlimited data and yes I know the difference I do not have unlimited browsing what Mobilicity offer as unlimited data, I use a little over 100GB a month on one of the big 3

$10 for 100mb. Hmmm….
so that means, 1GB = 1000MB / 100MB = 10
10 * $10 = $100
$100 for 1GB?? Are you kidding me fido? Go with WIND or MOBI for unlimited data for less than $50. Big 3 are really looking for ways to screw people over.

1 GB = 1 024 MB. Hence my comment : “ONLY $55/MONTH FOR NOT EVEN A GIG!”
After the initial $10/100 MB/month, it is an additional $5/100 MB/month. So to pay $55/month for data alone gives you 10 x 100 MB = $55/month for 24 MB shy from a gig.
Some people commented that $5/100 MB/month should be the base rate, but compared to the $30/6 GB/month add-on, it is still a bad price.
This also busts the myth when providers say “those who use less pay less, and those who use more pay more.” Prices are disproportionate.

“Wind/Moblicity aren’t any better – go outside your home city and the’ll charge to the tune of $0.15/k. Yes, kilobyte! Ridiculous.”
Let’s correct that.

It’s only a rip off if you use a lot of data. If you are going to use 1GB + of data, sign up for one of their other options. For someone who only will use data to check emails and directions from time to time, it’s more than enough. I have the Fido Flex data retention plan which is 10$ if for less than 100MB and then goes up by increments up to 25$ for up to 1 GB. I’ve gone over 100MB once in 8 months. With free WiFi at so many places and at home, I don’t see why I would need anything more. Many people are in the same boat. I could pay 30$ for 6 GB and get a “deal” but I still would not use it more. I prefer WiFi when I can get it, it’s usually much faster. As a bonus, I get to actually interact with people instead of being a douche and watching Youtube videos on my phone

It’s not a matter of “enough” it’s a matter of gouging people who want to pay less. If they can sell a GB for $5 on one plan, why do they sell it for $100 on another? Their costs are the same either way.

This is nowhere close to Koodo’s $10 data saver flex plan (which I have, after leaving Fido).
The overage of $5 per 100MB can’t be correct, especially if it replaces the $30 for 1GB plan. Under this plan, 1 GB would cost about $10 + 9 x $5 = $55. Something doesn’t make sense.

Or Koodo’s newly released $25/2 GB/month. The Data Saver is good for people who use 300 MB or less per month. But who uses only 5 MB at $5/5 MB/month!? That just sounds very strange! :S

I agree with HabsFan. It’s like buying fruit, I can maybe get the ginormous Costco package for only a few dollars more, but I can only eat the slightly cheaper, but smaller package. Either way, what I don’t eat gets thrown away each month. So I’m still saving money for how I use my phone. It would be nice if you could get even a fractional credit for unused data, so you can go high one month, or (dare to dream)apply it to US data when travelling. Pigs will fly first!!

Hmm… seems more like a cash grab than a “deal”
Say you use 500MB/mth
Current Fido Plan: $25 (fixed) or $30 (flex)
New Fido Plan: $30 (10+4*5)
Say you use 1GB/mth
Current Fido Plan: $30 (fixed) or $35 (flex)
New Fido Plan: $55 (10+9*5)
Doesn’t seem like a “savings” at all does it? The only customer base that benefits from this will be one that uses data plan for email checking purposes ONLY.

Alex, the actual price is $60 for 5GB. You cannot compare the $30 for 6GB offer with new plans since it was NEVER an actual permanent plan, only a special limited-time promotion. You’re comparing regular pricing with sale pricing…lol.

If you know you’re going to be using 1 Gb, you’re probably going to get an add-on like this:
http://www.fido.ca/web/content/internet/wia_email_options#Data_options
I’m pretty sure the $10/100 Mb is just for people who rarely use data.
Not that I’m defending them by any means; I’m still stuck with a dumbphone on Fido, since their smartphone selection and sub-par data plans make me cringe. Oh well, hopefully the Nexus Prime launches in time for Wind to come to KW.

For a smartphone, this is an absolute ripoff. For grey market dumbphones that don’t have 3G that works here, not so much.

Umm… Just a month ago, fido had $10/month unlimited mobile browsing. What the hell happened? So glad I didn’t wait long to sign up for the contract before it disappeared. I will have to check customer service to see if nothing changed on my plan.
I own a nokia c6 (outdated I know.. shut it). But surfing online and viewing youtube videos is great.
