Scenario A James buys his device outright for $600, and pays $50 a month for his plan. Scenario B Sally takes advantage of this promotion, signs a 3 year term to get the device for $0, and pays $50 for her plan. After 3 years, both James and Sally have paid $1800 in plan costs, but James also paid an extra $600 for the phone. What exactly do you expect with stupid comments like "it's not free if you have to sign 3 years"? Do you expect them to hand you a free smartphone that you can sign up with using any provider immediately?! Not just does Sally pay $600 less than James, but people on contract are often given greater discounts and promotional plans because they are locked-in long term. It's simple logic. Do I like 3 year terms? No. But does my example above make sense? Yes.

The 9780 is identical except with 256mb more memory and a 5mp camera, Total cost difference for RIM is probably $0 or less considering component prices have dropped so much since they built the 9700. I'd wait until the new BB's come out, RIM will have to be aggressive on price with them in order to keep marketshare. Considering the 9700 was free on a 1 year at Telus, this is ice cold.
