Koodo revamps monthly plans, removes long distance charges within Canada

Wow, Koodo Mobile has changed up their entire monthly price plans. The new Canada-wide plans ALL include long-distance within Canada, basically eliminating long distance and calling zones. There are 5 plans that range from $15 a month to an unlimited $45 a month. A different amount of minutes are allocated for each plan, but all include Canada-wide calling and up to 50 text messages, evenings and weekends start at 5pm for the $25 plan and above. In addition, as you can see by the brochure that was sent to us Koodo states that all Canada-wide plan include family calling, call waiting, conference calling and per second billing. Data and caller display are extra.

Great move. Expect other carriers to follow.
(Thanks tipster!)

  1. Wow! Finally! I almost can’t believe it. One of the big guys eliminating long distance!?

Now let’s watch the domino effect. Solo, Virgin, Fido will all follow suit very shortly. Wait for it…

  2. This is great news, especially for people in places where WIND and Mobilicity haven’t reached (Halifax, NS for me). I hope they don’t adjust prices on add-ons or other plans upwards to compensate.

  7. One catch – they are no longer including unlimited txt/mms. It looks like only 50 are included.

This probably doesn’t affect many with a data device because of better messengers such as kik..

    • I also just noticed that there’s a $10 CallerID + VoiceMail + Unlimited txt/mms addon.

I don’t know how much CallerID + VoiceMail was before, but I have a feeling that it’s actually CHEAPER now and includes the texting :D

    • Unfortunately, this value pack was removed from the website. The add-ons cost:
      * $5 for unlimited SMS and MMS
      * $6 for Caller ID
      * $6 for voice mail

So all these fees can add-up. $45 for Canada-wide calling is a good enough deal, however.

  9. There is no VM or CID but add this with the rumored $25 2gb data and it could be an interesting Summer / Fall. This is going to hurt Wind/Mobi there only advantage is their USA calling and USA roamer rates. Kinda surprised they didn’t add unlimited texts

    • WIND is great if you stay in the zone. If you go outside of it then don’t even bother using data or you’ll become a poor man pretty quick.

I don’t know about you but I spend a fair amount of time in the car driving places that are not within WIND zones.

It’s nice to be able to have a 2 hour call with my wife during a 2 hour drive from up north to home.

But there are people who travel across country and for them to be on a Wind plan would be very expensive due to roaming charges and this is where Koodo Comes in.

Stop arguing, its like saying pears are better than apples.

  18. In the present and near future, they will not match Mobi or public mobile in price and features. It will be higher but sound the same. For this to happen; public mobile and mobi need to get the new spectrum auction or they will fail or have slow growth.

The real change will come when the big three do the same as Quebec and match prices and features.

I think the federal government should not allow the big three to bid on the upcoming spectrum. The big three do not need it and would just buy it up to stop competition and charge us later to make up the losses.

  19. Well can you travel across a zone, without paying $4 a mb or $25 every 100 minutes. And you can’t compare a promo plan to standard plans. Right now wind is $55 plus you gotta buy your own device. And you don’t see the big picture, now people up in Barrie or rural towns can get unlimited calling. A big step for Canadians.

  24. @ Ryan: Well if we look in the US you can get Unlimted Call, Texting and 2GB of data for $80 with T-Mobile, probably the best individual plan down there. You can get basically the same now with Koodo. This is probably the first time a Canadian company has matched a US company, without zones. Not all of us want to use our MOBILE phone in the same city.

    • @abc123 Anywhere you can Koodo/Telus coverage anywhere in Canada, you can place a call to any Canadian phone number. It doesn’t matter what your ‘local’ number is. Call from Toronto to Vancouver, or vice versa, with a Halifax number. Doesn’t matter, no long distance charges.

This is why this is such a huge deal. First time it happens in Canada.

  37. I want to like this change but I can’t. Sure, for those traveling a lot or needing lots of in-Canada LD this is absolutely awesome. For most of the population however it is not …. you lose CID, you lose unlimited texting so you end up paying more for the same thing (nb. I’m using the $35 unlimited incoming plan for a comparison). If these canada-wide plans were just options in a lineup of plans that gave you other things instead for a reasonable price then yeah, it would have been a step forward. This way they just cleverly devised a plan to fleece everybody while we all thank them and proclaim them saviours. Ugly!!!

Its always Wind this and Mobilicity that. You know what thats super spectacular if you live in the Wind and Mobilicity areas, but alot of Canadian dont and Koodo really is the best option for that.

Also I travel alot of times to areas in Vancouver that are not covered by Wind and Mobilicity so why would I want to pay for a service I cant use?

I think before you start bashing or trolling, think about it logically.

I understand that alot of people love Wind/Mobilicity but they dont meet everyone needs

  40. Just got the Optimus One and the 35$ Canada wide plan plus 10$ for call display, voicemail and unlimited text. It is much better value than anything Virgin could offer (former provider) which was the same except that I had 100 minutes and it was not nationwide. Time will tell about the service and any other smart phone Koodo will offer. I would have preferred a HTC phone but they had slim pickings. Another+ was that Koodo does not impose a data plan, unlike Fido, Virgin, etc with a smartphone. The plan charges 5, 10, 15$ depending on how much data was used. I’m not a heavy user so even 100 mb was a lot. Just need it for GPS from time to time or email… That’s just me.

    Koodos to Koodo.

  41. This is good marketing, people will like that and buy! But for the customers in the know it is probably not as good as it looks (so from a management perspective this is really a good move!). The new prices are nice for some users (including power-users), but not for everyone. Me and my partner both have the (now outdated) Social plan with different add ons. She pays 54$/month – if she was to change for one of the new plans she’d have to fork out 60$ to get the same service. Of course, she’d save 0.05$/minute on national long distance charges, but she doesn’t have a lot of them. And yes, of course, she could get more bang for the buck – but as she doesn’t need that it is not really an asset.

I would maybe save a little (down from the 74$ to 70$) and wouldn’t have to worry if I’m still within my 300 minutes (there is no real time voice billing in Nova Scotia; I’ve never went over the 300 but have reached more than 250 minutes sometimes).

When we add it up, she’d pay 6$ more and I’d save 4$ (not really, see below). Of course, we could just change one of the two plans. New customers however don’t have that choice. So for some people it has become more expensive.

Furthermore, my base rates would go up from 40 to 45. This means that cancelling the add-ons when I’m outside the country for a while is going to save me less money. So far, I could save 34$/month (plus tax) by deactivating my add ons. This would go down to 25$/month if I switched to the new plans (or seen from the other side, I’d be paying 5$/month more while not using the service). As I travel a lot for work, this reduces the 4$ monthly savings even further.

Note that if you use the “payback” through the “tab”, every saved dollar or every incremental dollar spent is actually just 90 cents.

This is all rather complex maths which serves Telus/Koodo well: It makes comparing prices/costs more and more difficult. Which reduces customer churning. I’m of the impression that they have very talented people in pricing and marketing that cooperate well.

  42. Correction: She’d have to fork out 70$, so the price would increase by 16$/month. I forgot that there is no data included in the new prices. My bad.

So if we would become Koodo customers now, the new prices would be higher for us.

Still, management-wise a great move. They make more money and most people will think that it is cheaper, because long distance is included. Wether these people need long distance to that amount or not. :-)

  43. For me this works out great! I was on the $25 Talk and Text Combo with the $12 add on for VM, CID, 5 pm evenings and weekends. For the same amount, I could have long distance included! Well, actually I would save $2 since the VM, CID and unlimited texts is only $10.

I don’t use my phone to make phone calls during the day as I’m at work, my family all live in areas that are long distance for me to call, and I do text quite a bit.

Now I don’t have to worry about buying phone cards to help minimize my long distance costs.

This is a good thing for me. In fact, looking at my usage I went down to the $20 plan with 7 pm evenings and weekends as I just don’t use my phone that much right after work.
