Samsung says OS 2.3.3 upgrade for the Vibrant, Captivate and Fascinate 3G+ coming “later this summer!”

Late last week it was revealed that Bell will be upgrading several Android devices to OS 2.3 sometime this Summer. The list included the Samsung Galaxy Tab, Galaxy S Vibrant, Incredible S, Desire Z and the ATRIX. There is no definite date of when the upgrade will be taking place but Samsung Canada has just announced that the entire Galaxy S family (Vibrant, Captivate and Fascinate 3G+) will be getting OS 2.3.3 “later this summer!”. No word on when the upgrade to 2.3.3 for the Fascinate 4G will be available.

    • See my comment about how Android is developed, Gingerbread 2.3.3 is pretty much up to date with the current standard in Android, Honeycomb is only for Tablets and Ice Cream has not been released yet.. I think all this hand-wringing about updates and Android is getting ridiculous, people expect manufactures to release their update the day that Google announces the GA of the product, it takes some time to certify Android for each manufacturer.. Do you want to release something that is buggy, incomplete etc etc.. I’ve run lots of custom roms on my Captivate, and though I’ve found some I like, they all have a down side..

I’m back to the stock rogers rom, it works fine, has minimal bloatware and I’ll just wait for the 2.3.3 rom to hit and I’ll be happy.

    • the SGS2 will have the same issue with Bell.

Not sure why the SGS is getting 2.3.3 and not 2.3.4?

    • ugh, don’t use AT&T Roms on the Cappy. GPS goes to crap.

I’m using Firefly 3.0 which runs Froyo. Very solid ROM, going to check out some 2.3 roms soon probably.

My question to Samsung, why are we only getting 2.3.3? Why not 2.3.4?

  9. 2.3.4 is just a patch for NFC, the captivate doesn’t have the hardware for this, so no biggy, and Honeycomb is for tablets only, all of the other phone MFGs take a while to bring new OS’s to their hardware, so stop complaining,

I’m and Android developer and here’s how the Android ecosystem works.. Google releases the next version of Android and it will take the hardware manufacturers 6 months to a year to update the phones.. 2.3.3 is pretty much state of the art in the Android world. (at least for phones)

From all reports the 2.3.3 Samsung Captivate rom is excellent, they actually seem to have looked at what the guys developing custom roms had done, and have incorporated that into this rom. There’s many instances where the guys developing custom roms have actually been helped by Samsung.

The captivate with 2.2 has been the best smartphone experience I’ve had to date, that’s coming from quite a few blackberries and a Sony X10 Android phone..

    • Hi Kevin, you seem to know what you’re talking about.

Hope you might give me a bit of insight. If you were to buy a Rogers android device today, which would it be? I lean towards the Captivate over Nexus s, mainly for hd video, expandable storage, and flashy interface, but I know it is an older device and don’t want to regret it in a couple months…

Ideally, I would love a Galaxy S II (of course), but Bell is not an option.

Any kind of guidance would be much appreciated!

    • not true at all. 2.3.4 added Google Maps 5.1 with 3D, Voice Search 2.1.1 with Voice Actions and personalized voice search, and the latest version of Google Books not to mention Google Talk with video and voice chat. NFC was addes in 2.3.3.

  10. I am using 2.3.4 Mosaic from xda-developers.com and it’s sweet. Fast, stable and the gps works like a charm.

  11. SebFox… The Nexus S is the one to get. Latest version of Android already loaded and no Samsung bloatware to slow it down.

  12. I am running the “leaked” Gingerbread 2.3.3 on my Captivate. GPS is better, battery life is better, and a lot of the apps, that I couldn’t get to work on the official Froyo 2.2, work now. Can’t wait for the official release!

  14. Well, I can’t afford to break my warranty by rooting my phone so as a Samsung customer this is very frustrating. It’s great that we’re getting 2.3, finally, but it’s late, very late, and on Telus, I still don’t have it.

There’s only two things I get out of this: Not buying a Samsung again, not coming back to Telus. It was the same with my BlackBerry; Telus has a track record of not keeping up with updates.

What’s more? Bell now has all the latest and greatest Android smartphones, including the 2.3 update for their old SGS. Talk about better support than Telus.

  15. I have a Google Nexus One, that I bought in Europe, and my wife has a Samsung Captivate from Rogers.
My GNO is fabulous! I love it! I received 2.3.4 OTA several months ago, no problem.
My wife is beyond frustrated with her Samsung, and with Rogers. Still on 2.2, Kies is an idiotic program to use, and Samsung just doesn’t seem to care. They were happy to take her money, but less to maintain the relationship.
$600.00 to get lied to – Boo to both of them!
I would not buy another Samsung product. I have no faith in their concern for me as a customer. Samsung treats customers as some gullible bunch who exist to be exploited and lied to at their pleasure.
We do pay as you go with Rogers, and I would drop them in a flash if another carrier offered better rates. I have no sense of loyalty to either.
My son was thinking of a Galaxy Tab, but I advised him to wait for the Archos G9 series to come out next month.

  17. I find it fairly sad that the x10 gets the update before the captivate. Gingerbread makes the x10 run very well so far and i like the improvements of 2.2. So rogers get your act together.
