Public Mobile has really been in the background over the past few months. We’ve only heard about them during the Globalive (WIND Mobile) Federal Court of Appeal hearings back in June, before that it was the release of their email capable BUZZ device. An internal doc that we received shows a promo happening until July 24th that gives anyone who purchases the $24 or $35 plan a $10 discount on any handset (good in both Ontario or Quebec). This will give them a slight boost in subscriber numbers. Apparently they’re racking up the subscribers too… we’ve been hearing various numbers (signing up thousands per week), but nothing confirmed.
This promo isn’t on the Public Mobile website yet (but is available in-store)
(Thanks tipster!)

well for a device that only costs $50 it would be silly to give $50 off.

Butterfingers.
“Unlimited Internet access” for $10/month, but no streaming video? Aww… :’(
Public Mobile is kind of like what Koodo Mobile used to be. For a little over two years, Koodo had no smartphones and only basic feature phones. However, because of popular demand, they introduced budget-friendly BlackBerry and Android phones.
It will be interesting to see if Public carries any smartphones. Oh, by the way, the Public Mobile Buzz is *NOT* a smartphone.

Decent promo for value conscious consumers, considering low end handset is only $50, and high end is $99. Fair value promo in my opinion, still like these guys as an underdog. Im sure better handsets will come in time, I’ve already heard of Android coming to Public before years end. For a lot of people it suits their phone needs..calling and texting without spending a lot.

Dave,
We all know who you sleep with, Wind gets money from Egypt in exchange of ownership (control) Public gets money from a bank in china (loan) no ownership, no representative at the board. You can find all of this on the web… That is where the difference stands between PUblic and Wind. No one challenge the fact that mobi got money from a bank in Germany !!! Stop the BS and get the story straight …. Btw say high to Ken, oh sorry he’s gone… Chris? Gone too … Well say hi to the guys that run the business …you know those
guys Tony reports to in the office oh they don’t speak English …. Well too bad I am sure they are nice guys

Public as been quiet on promo lately, usualy corporations don’t run promos when they do fine, maybe public is on plan, over plan or just slightly behind plan. Also of all the new entrants Public did not let go any executive or staff since it was created, at least I didn’t hear of any. Normally private equity firm have no patience with start up not running on plan. I would assume that some of the investors are happy with what they see. Not sure the thompson family would let them run with well under planned results .what if they are the only one’s to succeed ?

…lets just say this will be PMs breakout phone.

200,000 eh?
last i heard it was around the 50,000 mark……and really, the article states they are claiming “thousands every week”…..I find this bit of PR just a bit bloated….
bear in mind as well, if there is a “breakout” phone to be offered, they will have to start offering large-scale data to compensate. there is nothing out there that kids are looking for that doesn’t involve some form of android…..and without data that becomes fairly useless.
don’t get me wrong, public really are a great company, and do have their place in the market. it’s just a heck of a lot smaller than what we’re reading about.

Totally Agree with both Phone Guy and Smiths.
So tired of people on here dogging on Public Mobile.
Obviously the Buzz is not a smart phone, Public never claimed it was. People need to do their homework.
I think Public is the only example of consistent, patient growth of the three new entrants.
It seems to be they have planned well and are quite healthy.
STOP comparing them to the other new entrants. For those who actually know something about Wireless outside of Canada, Public never wanted to really compete with incumbents or new entrants-This is why they didn’t launch with Blackberries, Smartphones or Data etc.
They would not have done this even if they could have!
They are based on a US model of “Alternative Discount Carrier” such as Metro PCS. Although, Metro now has all the handsets and toys/data etc, they began just as Public did with relatively concentrated coverage areas, no frills handsets and a very simple yet effective value proposition.
Smiths’ points hit all the nails on the head. Public has had no big management turnovers or big firings and as well have not hemorrhaged huge amounts of cash in marketing.
Wind is doing fairly well but both Wind and Mobilicity are burning through huge wads of cash.
To quote Public’s CEO:
“We are patient with growth, impatient in profitability”.
Do not be confused between market presence and success.
I will bet top dollar that Public is in the best financial shape than any new entrant.
How much or rather how little did they pay for spectrum again?
Oh yeah, exactly.. Case rested.

Dear Moe,
I think you confuse not satisfactory to you rather than not a good option, CDMA may be outdated at one point, so will HSPA, keep in mind that over 70% of wireless customers in north america and asia are still on a CDMA phone (Telus/Bell/Verizon/sprint/Metro Pcs etc). If we apply your comment to cars everyone that doesn’t drive a Porsche is driving a BAD car. You have the right to not be appealed by Public’s handsets or technology, yet hundred of thousands of people don’t give a crap about that. So if you say Public does not fit your need base on your comment I buy that but saying it is crap that is just a FAN boy misleading comment

Do you smoke Meth? Just wondering because you’re living life with pipe dreams to say the plans suck. The network is a bit sluggish being CDMA but as a company they have been expanding at a rapid enough pace. Regardless, the network does what it is intended for. Talk and Text. At PM’s price point for talk and text you really cant b***h saying it sucks. When’s the last time you got unlimited calling and text from Rogers without spending more than $50.00 or having some garbage Retention Plan (Sucked in for 3 more years)?
On the real, with having no contract, no credit checks and affordable phones for those who are on a fixed imcome you can’t complain!!
Clearly the company isn’t the only one whinning now are they Moe???

this is how you know if you hear a rumor that PM has only 50000 is false…think about it logically…PM has been open for almost 2 years with over 200 lactions but lets say 200 for the sake of arguement…50000 divided my 200 locations is 250…so there saying that each store does 125/yr? lmao omg thats brutal maybe mobilicity but not PM…our 5 stores I work out of do approx 200/month..so dont believe everything you read…GO PM!!!

are you one of those red necks that tend to just pick on the little thigns before you try it….
really.. i rather just cut my balls off just because i dont want my kids living in this world because of people like dip s*** …..
Yes Pm is still on CDMA… but atleast they have a plan and the money to back up everything they have…
all wind has been doing is doing a hot potato..and passing it around…
from the looks of it.. expanding with really poor coverage and HOLES everywhere is really bad…

and they still in the background they will never move forward due to their way of thinking….their business strategy of the 80′s…. the way how they promote their old products and so on. I guess this business is in the wrong hands. They don’t have any long term vision.
i really feel sorry for you guys
