OPP targeting distracted drivers the week of July 11th, “Phone in One Hand, Ticket in the Other”

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are going all out and cracking down on those who are physically talking or texting while driving. The OPP says they’ll be enforcing their “Phone in One Hand, Ticket in the Other” blitz during the week of July 11th. The first blitz the OPP ran was a couple weeks back saw officers hand out 1,600 tickets, which fines can run you upwards of $155 each. Since January of 2010 the OPP has charged 8,522 people for using a hand-held device while driving.

Chris Lewis, OPP Commissioner, stated “My busy job as OPP Commissioner involves that I travel our roads and highways regularly and I am astounded and dismayed at the number of drivers I see talking or texting on cell phones over the course of my travels. These people have no regard for the safety of their passengers or the people travelling around them whose lives they can end in a split second”.
