  1. mobile syrup this is starting to get ridiculous now. stop posting false advertisements for best buy stating free phones. which is totally lying to consumers. phones will never be free not now not ever. getting a phone at $0 now you end up paying over $1,000 after that 3 yr term us done. its way way better to pay cash for that phone. you’ll save several hundreds of $$$$$$

    • Yea real smart let’s go buy out a nice smart phone for $600 the go and pay the the exact same amount every month that I would if i took a contract with a carrier I like and will be with for the next three or four years. Doesn’t make sense cause the long term cost is the same and less money up front. If I wanted the freedom to change whenever then I,m on the hook for activation fees plus the cost of a new sim card as well as a new phone because if I unlock mine I void the warranty on it plus it’s not guaranteed to work because the carrier I may switch too may use a different spectrum than what my current phone uses even though it’s unlocked. People that b***h about contracts and wanting freedom in my opinion just can’t get credit or have bad credit and should stick with koodo

    • Smart and educated people use contracts to their BENEFIT.

With Rogers over the past 5-6 years I’ve gotten a new phone at least once/year with full subsidy. Each year when I get a new one I can sell the previous one and get some $$ back.

Couple that with the insane retention plans you can get while on contract and I’m way ahead instead of going no contract, spending $600 on a phone and having a horrible plan.

  3. You both can’t read… Reading aint your thing?

MobileSyrup clearly states “on a 3 year contract”

I for one like millions of others, like these deals, since I’ll be having a phone for years, more like forever.

So what if their contracts??? Not everyone wants to pay $700 for a phone they’re going to use for 3+ years.

U know, its logical, you guys need to stop posting the same crap in every free phone post.

  4. MS, as a service to your readers perhaps you could write an article on the economics of buying a phone and the true cost of the hardware. There seems to be a lot of confusion in people’s minds because some unknown portion of the monthly fee is actually used to repay a loan. Call it Cell Economics 101.
If you continue to promote the deliberate confusion generated by the established cell companies readers will think you are representing the companies interests over the consumer’s interest. But that’s not the case, is it? Who’s side are you on here? A challenge to show some editorial initiative!

    • Well, it must be obvious that the carrier gives you a subsidy (discount) on a phone when you sign a contract with them ensuring you’ll be paying for monthly service, and some of that must go to paying for the phone.

But tell me, if you go buy your own phone without subsidy, and go to one of the carriers for service, are you suddenly going to get a cheaper/lower plan? Good luck. You’ll need to sign a 3 year term just to get one of their advertised plans which aren’t even that great.

If you really want to talk about economics of purchasing a phone, and the true cost of hardware, use T-Mobile USA as an example. Depending on whether you take a subsidy on the phone they actually give you different options for your plan. Pay for your phone or bring your own, and you get a cheaper monthly plan. Now that makes sense.

  5. yep thats what wind and mobilicity do. theres no contracts and no subsidized phones. this is why wind and mobilicity voice and data plans are half the cost of Telus, rogers, and bell and wind and mobilicity offer unlimited plans on top of that. with big 3 you pay around $100 per month to get any good retention plan with very little daytime minutes, no long distance, very little data. but hey if your happy paying $100 per month with big 3 to get that so called shiny new phone cheaper on subsidized plan and end up paying triple the monthly fees compared to wind, mobilicity $40 per month everything unlimited but hey pay around $400 for the phone you want. you still save $60 per month times 12 months times 3 years equals to: approx $2200 of savings.with these savings you could of bought 6 shiny new phones

  6. @ kyle
I don’t know where the hell your pulling $100/mo from. Personally I’d prefer to have good reliable coverage and service. For a good retention plan, you can get for around 50-60$/mo AND get a subsidized phone. With that, you don’t have to worry about coverage area, signal etc.
Unlimited always sounds good until you get crappy signal, service and bad reliability.
More likely than not, you’re always going to need a phone. So signing a 3year contract isn’t a big deal because you’re going to need the service. At least you’re getting what you pay for, and if you’re smart you can let it work in your benefit.

  7. ya $60 per month plus all the hidden fees and overage costs, will be well over $100 per month. I had one of those $50 per month plan with Telus, but my bills were never just $50, more like $120 per month after the hidden costs and overages. with mobilicity and wind you have bill certainty. you plan is $40, $40 is all you pay. no guess work. and no subsidizing a phone is bad. cause big 3 rip you off with triple the cost of the phone at end of contract. paying full price is way way cheaper in the end

    • i disagree kyle.

my current Rogers plan is as follows.

      300 daytime
      unlimited incoming, evenings (6pm), weekends
      2500 txt, cid,vm
500mb data (1gb add $5. whenever the 6gb promo comes back add $10)

i live in Ontario so i pay after tax $48.35 ($42.78 before tax)

for most people who work in a office 9 – 5 with access to phone and internet at work and at home that’s pretty much all you need.

now i know that not everyone will be able to get that from retentions because my wife’s line works out to $56 after tax for similar features (LD instead of incoming) but even if that plan was a bit more once you factor in the subsidized smartphone it’s not a bad deal.

  8. and like I said above, uneducated people sign contracts . like come on people its a phone not a mortgage or car loan here. your better off buying a phone in cash. but with a true value company like mobilicity of wind which you wont get riped off. big 3 rip you off cause big 3 dont provide 2 separate plans. 1 for people subsidizing phones. ,and 1 plan for people who buy the phones outright . if they did the plans for non subsidized phones would be half the price

    • You still don’t get it do you? Did you even read my earlier reply?

The smartest people are the ones who know how to use a contract to their benefit! Get an amazing retention plan under $50/month and squeeze $400-500 worth of a subsidy/discount out of the carrier every year. Say you get a $159 iPhone in 2010, you can go sell it for $400ish and get another subsidy on a phone in 2011.

  9. What i don’t understand is why the hell would you get a blackberry 9780 if you’re going on a 3-year contract? If your going on contract, why not bust out the extra $100-200 and get the highest end phone you can get on a 3-year plan?

  10. Mikaley, stop trying to educate Kyle – let him think people who commit to agreements are the ones who get shafted. I personally have $35 Unlimited canada-wide retention plan (wind match), 6gb data with $10 credit, call id and vm for free. I pay $45/month for nationwide unilmited and 6gb. All these little kiddies still think the big 3 give a s**t about their little 1 line accounts or whether you buy your own phone. They specialize in people who DON’T want to buy phones outright. It sucks initially but once you’ve had an account with either big 3 for long enough they’ll throw anything at you to keep you. As being someone who has $600+ in services with Rogers a month across my two consolidated accounts they constantly call me and make sure I’m happy and offer me incentives for referring people! The toys-r-us cell phone companies can badmouth the big carriers all they want but at the end of the day they’re the ones with all the big-business accounts.

By this time it should be obvious, if you don’t have a lot of money to spend and only want 1 smartphone at a cheap price, go with a discount carrier. If you have a big boy account and need the services of a company that has money to throw around, go with a big carrier.
No money? Student visa. Lots of money? Black visa.

  11. In this society now a days, people want things in their hands now that they can’t afford thats the problem with our society. People need to learn “buy things you can afford” with the means you have. I’m a person who paid cash for my home, paid cash for my cars, paid cash for my smartphones. thats how society once was in the olden days. Kids stayed home with mommy and daddy until they saved money and got married and moved out and paid cash for a house. Whats wrong with people these days that they can’t save money in the bank and buy things when the can, why are people so dumb that they want stuff now now now but want it free by subsidizing a simple phone or buying it by credit card. The smart educated kind of people are smart enough to do economics and financial planning by saving today for tomorrows future and toys you want. The problem with society today is that everyone spends their cash by pay cheque to pay cheque and forget about what they need or want in the future. And problem with parent and youths these days is that they move out at 16-18 years old with nothing but a job and a few bags of clothes, and move out to an apartment. What parents and youths need to do is have them stay at home as long as possible until they’ve saved enough cash to buy a house. and the problem is aslo parents charge their kids rent to stay home which is totally wrong, let their kids stay home for free bout put that money into a savings account to buy a house. This Canadian society needs to change their ways of living in this financial life or everything will turn into what happened to the United States economy. People open a savings account, put money in it every day, and when you have enough then buy the toys you want. stop trying to get cellphone companies giving you a miss belief free phone, banks giving you loans or mortagages, car loans, start saving your own money.

  14. Your Rogers retention plan still sucks. It can’t beat my Virgin plan, no retention here:

I do around 800 minutes per months, no long distance, texting and around 3gig of data. Here’s what I got with em

    on a supertab plan

Unlimited Talk, anytime, no zone restriction unlike fido,
    Unlimited Text,
    Voicemail and Call display
    6gig of data

$75/month+tax, no contract. And since my plan was higher than $65/month, they gave me 15% back on the tab instead of 10% (so $11.25 goes on my tab). So my phone will be already cleared in less than 26 months. Then I’ll get a new phone for cheap. eh!

Of course you windy fanboy will bark, but please note: My network never drop calls and will work everywhere in Canada. Plus with Wind you have the pay the full retail price, so you need to add the phone price to the monthly plan to do a fair comparaison. I consider 6gig of data as “unlimited”.

Imagine what retention will give me in 2 years :)

  15. @woot lol lol lol. 6 gb of data is no where close to unlimited. and wow $75 per month plus extra for hidden fees and overage fees will probably look more like $120 per month. and wind and mobilicity network works anywhere and every where in Canada just cost long distance outside your calling zone. exact same thing with virgin if you go outside your calling zone you pay extra for ling distance

  16. id rather pay $40 per month with mobilicity and have everything unlimited including U.S calling, Canada wide calling, international text messaging, unlimited data, unlimited text picture messaging. callwe id, voicemail. all this with big 3 would cost over $200 per month but still not close to unlimited.

  17. Anybody that can go through 6gb of data should cut down the porn but anyways I pay 65 a month without a retention plan and have unlimited data unlimited text all my features and the only hidden fee I pay is a 62 cent 911 charge, Kyle you are an i***t just because you can’t get a contract you figure they are the worst thing to have. I would happily sign into sign into my carrier for three years and get a phone I like rather then drop lots a money into a phone that may be mediocre because I don’t want to drop 600 on a locked phone or better yet buy something unlocked off of eBay with no warranty. With the early upgrade fees most of the carriers offer now it’s cheaper to go that route now then it is to buy a phone out. Who cares if I have to renew for 3yrs if I like the carrier why would I switch. Plus the cost is the same over 3yrs whether I have a contract or not. The freaken cancellation fees with a carrier in a lot of cases is cheaper than buying a phone. Contracts bad? I don’t think so
