In a completely unexpected twist in the BlackBerry World 2011 was a drop by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. Together they announced a partnership that now makes the Bing search engine the default search and mapping for BlackBerry devices. Ballmer shows a video of this in action on a Torch 9800 which is after the break

  1. Woah, talk about left field. RIM is taking such a unique approach….Android apps on Playbook yet deep Bing integration. The mobile market just got a whole lot more interesting.

    • Didn’t RIM also mention they wanted Office 365? Bing might be apart of a much larger deal that allows them to use office 365

    • Used to use google as my default search engine and now I use bing, neither search engine is really better than the other. They both produce accurate results but I like the bing logo better.

Used to use google maps and now I use bing maps (they show traffic congestion, construction on routes I am planning to take, and it looks 21st century compared the google maps which looks outdated, also functions much better than google maps)

  4. Hold up. Are they actually demonstrating OS 7 features on a Torch? A device they won’t be upgrading?

  5. any partnership involving microsoft in a mobile industry right now is a huge fail…..come on RIM, you are taking one step forward and two steps back. Google integration will favor you more….it comes down to simple numbers of who uses what(google) more. Bing maps is disgustingly primitive to google maps as well.

  6. Bing is pretty awful, but their only other choice was Google, which is also a competitor. No easy choice for them I guess, but I wish it had been Google instead.

More disappointing is that they are abandoning older devices without the OS7 upgrade.

  7. Ultimately, the customer should get to decide, just like on a PC. I’d lose a lot of respect for RIM if they are simply taking a bribe to force their users to use Bing.

It’s OK if Bing is just the default and we can easily switch to Google, but if Bing is deeply integrated such that using Google equivelents doesn’t work well then this is a big step backwards for BB users.

Google has done almost nothing to intentionally lock me into their search and maps tools, but I’m fairly attached to them anyway and I think it would be silly if this meant that I can’t buy Blackberries.

    • Totally agree…..with the moves Microsoft has been making it smells like RIM was swayed by money or even patent sharing perhaps…RIM and Google have so much to offer eachother ….this deal with Microsoft makes no sense…..I also think that RIM has more of a conflict of interest with Microsoft than it does with Google seeing how Microsoft and RIM are both trying to regain lost market share, in which case at first glance this seems like the right thing to do but I fear Microsoft is “playing” RIM and instead using them to showcase they’re search and mapping software that would probably run a lot better and integrated on a WP7 device.

  8. Well Google has not release anything for the Playbook… So it’s seem they are not supporting RIM anymore. Now with MS, and the previous Cloud announcement and MS / Nokia which owns Navteq, just make sense to get the mapping software from them.

Besides RIM and MS are corporate solutions… and MS maybe sniffing out to buy RIM since they don’t have any tablet’s and there WP7 is doing dismal.

    • No chance is Microsoft buying or even thinking about buying RIM…..they are not a “palm” sized company that can be bought…(yet anyway)…further more ..I truly appreciate your opinion but sincerely mark it as absurdity in the highest degree…lol

  12. Big mistake. We don’t want ANY search engine baked into the OS. Keep it as a very high level layer and, really.. google should be default. Most people prefer it and Google is better at filtering out the black hat SEO companies.

  13. Folks, it is about the Patents that Nortel had, Google is trying to get them. By teaming up with MS they can keep them between the 2 companies. Google is their competition, so is Apple. Notice how Apple doesnt have Google Navigation on iOS like Android phones come pre loaded with? Apple is distancing themselves from Google, Blackberry is doing the same… Its all about market share.
