Public Mobile data device called “BUZZ” now available

Data is now available at Public Mobile. The BUZZ is their data device and it’s been immediately put on sale for $99 (usually $119). The specs are decent for their target audience: QWERTY keyboard, 1.3 megapixel camera, 2.2-inch display, WAP browser, speakerphone, MP3 player, Bluetooth. In addition, Public came out with a $5 Unlimited email add-on and is offering 3 months for free when you purchase the BUZZ. Good deal considering their unlimited plans range from $15 – $35 a month.

With Public Mobile launching data the only Canadian wireless brand that doesn’t offer data to its customers is Rogers sub-brand Chatr Wireless.

    • I dunno. Why don’t you ask the millions upon millions of people in the world (here included) that have phones WORSE then this one?

Not everyone wants a 500-800 piece of tech in their pocket.

This is a good start for PM.

    • Not everyone needs (or wants!) the latest features on their phones, particularly if it costs them twice as much as a basic PC.

Public Mobile has a good strategy going after that not so insignificant market with prices to suit.

  5. @Eric V.
“Who is gonna use this thing? Really? It’s not a Blackberry, it’s not an iPhone, and it doesn’t run Android. Who wants a non-standard device with a WAP browser.”

People with $99 to spend on a phone that’s who!

Of course I’m not in that bracket, I’m driving down to buffalo for the T-mobile G2x at the end of the month to use on mobi, but just because YOU wont but it, doesn’t mean that someone else who just needs a “phone” wont.

    … See what I just did there… uh huh…

    • If they are not mentioning it, it probably means that this is one of those OEM manufacturers that are a dime a dozen in China. Probably does not matter as long as the phone works!

  8. A review of the device will be appreciated. Interested to know how well it handles email and whether it does push email, what type of email protocols it can handle (IMAP, POP, Exchange etc), and whether it can do HTML email.

    • Bought it, use it. Exchange, Hotmail, Gmail, etc supported. Also support my business email out of the box. Email is decent for the device. Text is a little rough if you’re use to BB or iPwn. Love the cost and I have excellent reception. Better than my Rogers phone on a N1.

I give PM my full support. 3G data and a new Android handset are arriving in Dec 11. I’m all for that.

    • To be honest – you can get way more for $45/month and definitely a better phone for $99 from Wind – and I have nothing against Public.

You should do some research before you talk the most expensive plan they offer is 35$, otherwise the 24$ plan offers world wide text and province wide talk.. the cheapest in canada, bought the phone today, emails are just as fast as any other company, interent is a few seconds slower.

      I did – their $35 plan + $10 for Data = $45.

    • In Montreal there is no WIND… Videosuck out bid them on that bandwidth with the expectation that they could charge typical greedy Canadian prices and string people in from the cable and internet packages they offer.

So in Montreal, Public Mobile offers the greatest unlimited service value.

However, I can’t help but feel they are making huge greedy profit margins on these “minor” brand name and now with the BUZZ “no name” phones… Notice they don’t offer the Samsung flip with voice activation anymore.

So, I would like to see better battery life from their Product lines, but living in Montreal you really need to thank PM for offering a great value service.

  12. They do have internet option. Go check their site. Just email is $5 and unlimited email + internet is $10.

I hope Public Mobile launches a Sim Card Compatible Network (like HSPA+:1700/2100) so they can have better smartphones and more convienent to port to them

  13. The device is made by Teleepoch Ltd. It is not sold anywhere else in the world, although a similar device is sold by Open Mobile in Puerto Rico and is called the V1.

  18. Ok this is getting silly PUBLIC is releasing another phone and WIND is still struggling to deliver what they promised months ago. seem clear to all that Wind is about to give it up. Packing up and leaving they are. I wonder if the steamed veg, chall and tubby mike can get EI. Oh wait wind is not Canadian.. so what they will get is the knee in the package package. quashed outsourced and jabronied

    • Wind are still growing faster than Mobi, (using market estimates since they wont release sub numbers) and has better coverage….

I tried out a Mobi data sim in store with the Huwawei e1691 and Wind got 5.2/2.6 60ms ping. mobi got 3.5/.14 312ms ping

same device, same laptop, same location, same test server. Wind beats Mobi anyday

  19. I just bought the phone today to check it out and I’m totally bringing it back to the store tomorrow. The interface is absolute nonsense, being what you could probably define as the most counter intuitive phone ever, even compared to the other phones public mobile displays. The design is also very poor, the buttons making weird screeching noises, for example. I was actually better off with the dinosaur style ZTE…

  21. 3G is no longer necessary…. well it may last another 6-7 months. Then 4G is coming.. Heard PM has a plan to move onto LTE straight. Not really worth investing for a technology that will not be used so commonly in about 6- 12 months.

    • LTE should fall back onto HSPA(+) then EDGE, then original GSM

the HSPA networks will be used for quite some time to come

  25. I purchased a BUZZ yesterday from Public Mobile. I have to say, it’s the worst piece of garbage I have ever bought. The web browsing capabilities are practically useless. Navigation is poor and the menus are very poorly designed. If you’re thinking you are getting a blackberry alternative, think again. I am very disappointed with this phone.. I tried to return it, but apparently I spent 30 mins on the phone with tech support over why Google Maps doesn’t function. And, if you go over 30mins, no returns/refunds/exchanges… So, I’m stuck with the worst phone ever.. I should have dropped the 300$ on the Blackberry Curve, at least it doesn’t look like a 4yr old designed the GUI. And at least browsing websites isn’t impossible, like the BUZZ.

Public Mobile shouldn’t buy China-made and designed garbage.

  26. I bought it over a week ago and I find the battery life doesn’t last long so I’ve made adjustments i.e. I charge it at night and I don’t do the email because it vibrates each time I get an email and I get alot in one day. I’m thinking that should help.

I appreciate the low plan $24/month for unlimited calling, call display and unlimited text (international included). The thing I’m not thrilled with is I can’t even dial 411 and hopefully will not find out that I can’t dial 911 either.

Overall for the price of both the phone and the plan I’m sticking with Public Mobile…
