Video: Another perspective at the growth of Android

A couple weeks back Google showed a video of a global look at the progression of Android over the past 15 months (October 2008 to January 2011). There are currently more than 350,000 activations per day and a video created by Greek blogger Stefanos Kofopouloshas paints a better picture of how Android is slowly being adopted. Kofopoulos states that based on 350,000 activations per day it would only take Greece a month until everyone in the whole country had an Android in their hand. The same is for California, it would only take 124 days for the state to fully adopt Android. Clearly this is grand thinking because there are other platforms in play like iOS, BlackBerry, webOS and Windows Phone… but it’s makes an interesting point of how popular Android is becoming. Although Canada didn’t make it into the video our population is about 34 million, so it would take 97 days for Android to completely cover our great land.

  1. Why the success of Android?

Android OS = Simplicity and Flexibility!
iOS = Simplicity but with many Restriction!
WM7 OS = wanna be Android or iOS

    • this video’s time estimates are based on a linear growth tho. Which isn’t real.

Obviously Android will grow more than 350,000 activation a day world wide in the next few years.

And obviously the activation will slow down once its getting close to saturation.

    • Good to know that they’ve grown from 200k to 350k a day but thats pretty much all you need to know. I dont really understand the point of this video comparing the activations to birth rates, populations etc when its exponential growth.

Felt like I wasted 2 mins of my life…

  3. Thats good to hear that Android is catching up but google needs to fix the Android fragmentation issue. When these new customers realize that they are not going to receive an update or a function is not available because they are running an obsolete version of Android due to manufacturers or carriers withholding updates, then that would be troublesome. Not a fanboy of anything but i remember when a phone was very simple to use.

There are still a percentage of ppl that uses “non”smartphone phone.

    • Android, iOS, and the entire mobile market needs to bring us fully functional browsers, like the ones we use on our desktops. These mobile devices are nearly as fast as netbooks were a few years back, but the software is no where near as functional.

Android is definitely in the lead here, with plans to support Flash and WebGL in the coming months.

Once you have a fully functional browser, hardware fragmentation becomes MUCH less of an issue. Think about your desktop: how many ‘Apps’ do you use? If you are like most, you use your browser upwards of 95% of the time. Email, facebook, research, news, games – these can all be done easily and in high quality in a browser.

Apple’s holy war against Flash is really going to set them back here, I believe.

    • “Thats good to hear that Android is catching up”?

Catching up? Android has passed iPhone, RIM and Nokia’s Symbian to be the number 1 mobile OS in the world. No need to catch up it has surpassed all.

  4. I have enjoyed my android experience so far, except for the slow roll out of 2.2 for the milestone. My next android will definitely be a developer or htc phone though. Htc seems to be more apt at getting updates to there customers.

  6. @some internet dude

and how many of those android users “returned” their devices due to limitations of either updates or lack of support? here in my office most of my collegues “majority” uses either iphone or blackberry. Its funny that you mentioned this also cuz a collegue of mine inquired which tablet he should purchase for his son, either ipad or xoom. I mentioned that Xoom Android is a good choice and has a alot of features compared to iPAD, hardware wise. He opted for iPAD cuz of the itunes, apps and the UI is more user friendly. I also owned an android and there is a percentage that some apps will not work due to “FRAGMENTATION” as I mentioned earlier. My buddy who uses X10 with 1.6 OS could not take advantage of some of the features and apps that 2.1 has to offer which i did on my Motorola Milestone. He did eventually, after A YEAR of patiently waiting. Guess what? A slim chance on getting 2.3 update. Also, he will have to dish out another $500 for a phone with an updated Android OS. Is this why Android is becoming #1 mobile OS? Does it also show the growth of many frustrated Android users due to lack of compatibility? You can buy an iPhone or Blackberry and it will constantly be updated in a GLOBAL and TIMELY manner. That is not the case with Android, the so called #1 Mobile OS. Unfortunately, the only phone that is consistenly updated is the Google branded phone. Everything else come 2nd or a distant 3rd.

” Android has had flash for two years now, i guess your not a Android user.”

WRONG! Android did support FLASH but only from 2.1 and above. Get ur facts straight. 2 yrs support on flash? 2yrs ago everyone was still on 1.5/1.6 OS release. How could that be possible? Because of what you say is true, ONLY Nexus 1 has support for flash back then and a few random phones like Droid X etc..

Also, the reason I sold my Motorola Milestone is due to NO FLASH SUPPORT. False advertising by Motorola. 2.2 is suppose to come out Q1 2011 which I and everyone else had patiently waited when it was mentioned to be released since April of last year. Pity the fool that waited till this year.

I would also like to mention a good example of Android fragmentation. Motorola released Droid/Milestone OS 2.1 and advertised as flash ready. Release date for 2.2 is April 2010. Come April 2010 – No 2.2 update. A few months after, Motorola released Droid 2 with 2.2 OS. Status on Droid 2.2 update – Null. Now, people who bought the Droid/Milestone for $500 are going to have to dish out additional $500 for the Droid 2, just to be able to use FLASH. I sold mine and didnt bother buying the new Droid 2. Thats the BS in Google Android. You have to keep buying phone after phone after phone just to use additional functions. Think about it.
