Public Mobile signing roaming agreement with TELUS

If you have a Public Mobile phone and for some reason go out of the calling zone your phone will not be able to make or receive calls. Currently on the Public Mobile website they state that “Initially we will not offer roaming but that may be added over time”.

It looks like the initial period is almost over. We’ve learned that Public Mobile is signing a roaming agreement with TELUS and here are some details: It’ll cost you $0.20/minute to roam when you’re not in a Public Mobile zone. Text messages while roaming will be $0.15 to send a text but will be free to receive. Since Public offers no contracts and no credit checks the way you’ll be able to roam is similar to the Mobilicity “My Wallet” program where you’ll need to put money into an account to Talk or Text (also purchase ringtones and wallpapers) and eventually data (delayed but coming). We’re told the minimum amount a customer can deposit into their account to roam is $10 and the max is $250. In addition, all phones when roaming will have a blue “R” at the top to let you know you’re roaming. And finally… all ZTE and Kyorcera devices will be able to roam but the current Samsung cannot for some reason. To compensate Public will be offering customers who want to roam a $25 discount to buy a new phone that roams.

The Public Mobile current coverage stretches from the edge of Pickering down to Hamilton. We don’t know specific dates of when this TELUS agreement will go into place but Public Mobile customers will be covered almost everywhere in Canada. We’ll have more info soon… but this is certainly great news for Public Mobile customers.

(Thanks tipster!)

  2. “but the current Samsung cannot for some reason”

Without looking at the specs, here is a guess why: it does not support the frequencies that are on Telus for CDMA. Remember Public Mobile decided to go with CDMA instead of UTMS, but still are in the AWS band… While Telus is not in the AWS band.

    • False. Public Mobile is on the PCS band (1900 MHz). It’s phone are technically compatible with Bell, Telus, Verizon, Sprint, etc.

    • I think it’s a given that Public will be bought out, after all they were begging for a partner just before Christmas and appraoched Mobilicity and Wind who both said no (Strange how Public didn’t have a problem with Wind’s ownership then!). Problem is, nobody can touch them until 2013 (?) and by that point Telus will be part of Bell.

    • True, but do you see Public being a good for for either? Not really. They wouldn’t be buying a network as it’s pretty much redundant to them, what they would be buying is 59,000 subs and they’re probably not worth the sort of money Public would want. Telus is a good fit, but it’s still a couple of years away yet. Can Public hold on that long?

  10. That’s great news for their customers and for others, because now they offer full coverage at competitive prices, and they have spectrum in Quebec as well. I hope they survive as independent.

  12. I have three phones with Public Mobile and I will disconnect them once I have used up what I have pre-paid for. Here is a company that really “You get what you pay for”. Depending on where you go – sometimes there is no reception or poor reception. They boast unlimited Texts but the archaic phones can only send three sentences at a time forcing you to send multiple messages to the recipient. In addition the sales staff and Managers are poorly trained and have limited knowledge of their services. Case in point – they pushed their most expensive phone -kyocera qwerty phone- onto all their new customers since last summer stating that it would be the only one of their three (yes I said three) phones that could go to the Internet in the future. After paying as much as three times the cheapest phone’s cost – and every month for nine months being told there is a data plan delay – they have finally (May 2011)offered the data plan but oops the expensive phone cannot be used for data after all. No reimbursement or credit towards the new phone. Another example, My little daughter went off to camp in Orillia Ont. I spoke to a Manager regarding coverage who assured me that money could be paid upfront from my Visa into a wallet and that they have a roaming agreement with Telus – the carrier in that area. After double checking the area code she would be at and assuring me that there would be no problems – she was unable to use the phone and the funds ($35) are nonrefundable. It turns out although I went in person to the Corporate Store the incompetent employee failed to tell me that the phone should be put on automatic and a special code should have been dialed before leaving Toronto. Later after going through three staff members at two Corporate Stores I was then given the first part so when she called me from a friends cell and I told her to put her phone on automatic but it still wouldn’t work – it still said ….searching. Only at the end of the day did I find out from Customer Service that she needed to have dialed * and a special (secret I guess) three digit number before leaving her local coverage area for it to work. Therefore once she went out of Toronto she couldn’t dial the code. I called the two stores who had not given me the proper advice and they were amazed to know this and thanked ME for educating them. They told me that I should call Head Office for a reset which I did BUT Head Office told me there is no such thing as a reset AND THAT the store staff do not know what they are talking about. I was not one bit surprised as every time I went to a store and asked a question the employees gave different answers and argued among themselves who was right. In addition to all this public mobile charges $3 payment fee for each phone therefore each month I pay a penalty of $9 just for paying my bill -they claim its a handling fee passed on by a company they outsource for payments. When I ask why I cannot put my three phones on one account they said because they are different phone numbers. So even if I pay one lump sum by Interact or Visa or Cash I still pay three processing fees! In closing let me just add that Public Mobile harasses their customers every month several times before the payment is due to remind them to pay. I even got a reminder 2 weeks and 5 days before the monthly payment was due. They claim sometimes that is a mistake and that they usually only send the reminder six days ahead but its not true-all three of my phones are constantly going off – even early Sunday Morning and late at night – I have requested NINE times from Managers and Head Office to turn it off. In addition they constantly send promotional offers which the existing customers cannot use (unless you agree to change your phone number every time there is a special)just to hound you to get your friends to join public mobile. It has caused a major problem for me at work and for my kids at School and there is no stopping them. I regret paying so far ahead that I will have to spend another 5 weeks with them on one phone and 9 weeks on another phone (I did that just to stop the payment reminders for a while)As soon as I use up my funds I will be going to another service provider – it doesn’t matter which one as I doubt any other would be as bad as Public Mobile – the service from hell!! Adding one last thing – you have to be in Toronto to Oshawa or a part of Montreal for your phone to work -once you leave that area you cannot even get text messages. eg Markham – no coverage Mississauga – no coverage etc

    • You’re a ranting i***t. Your post shows a date of June 2011. They had coverage in Mississauga, Markham and Brampton around April/May 2011. Why would you call a manager, or head office to take a reminder off. That is something *611 is for. No different than any other phone company. My uncle owns the same phone. You DO NOT have to dial some stupid code to use it in roaming. Just like any other standard phone you would go into the settings of course and look at the network/roam settings to ensure its on automatic rather than a home setting so that you can roam.

It doesn’t sound like moronic employee’s at stores. More like some loud mouth woman that doesn’t know how to read an instruction manual which also would be in the box with your phones.

I’m sure if you went with Wind, Mobilicity, Rogers, Bell, Telus, or any other carrier you would be on here ranting like a f*****g i***t due to a lack of comprehension.

Run yourself in front of a bus.

  13. And on a side not you CAN infact recieve texts while in roaming. Incoming texts are fine. Outgoing runs in line with Roaming.

    TOOL!
