A reality of fact, is that the majority of the market (in North America) cannot see beyond the limitations of the North American market.

It is hilarious how short sighted some people are. I’m currently in the UK and I see just as many, if not more Blackberry’s than Iphones.
Course to many people NA is all that matter, when business speaking, Europe and Asia are where it’s at, specifically India and China where Iphone has little market share.

whoa whoa whoa. Don’t say North America. We Canadians love Blackberries and we resent such a comparison to those dirty Americans.

Good job RIM. Its funny how people think that blackberry brand is dying, and yet RIM keeps putting out great numbers like this. Despite the competition, I think that the smart phone market has grown fast enough to accommodate all the added players and giving them a chance to grow. Apple, Android, and RIM are all doing great. That’s competition, where all the players are doing great. The consumer can only benefit from all this

Hmmm, I wonder if I got 2 thumbs down ’cause 2 people thought my sense of humor lame, or ’cause 2 people can’t correctly parse “Record 14.2 BlackBerry Smartphones shipped”?
On the off chance it’s the latter, note:
1) 14.2 = 14 and one fifth
2) it’s “14.2″, not “14.2M” or “14.2 million”
Well, if it wasn’t considered lame to begin with, possibly having to have to explain it should seal that deal. So, I won’t even bother to get into the all of 10.14 phones shipped last year.

The fact is, blackberry cannot compete with the iOS or android. It is simply not designed to accommodate the features of modern smartphones.
HOWEVER! I will say that RIM makes the BEST feature phone in the world hands down. That is why there are doing great. And that is great.

You want the best feature phones in the world, go to Japan. Them Panasonics and NEC phones are crazy. As for your attempt to marginalize Blackberry devices as a non-smartphone, LOL, you are pathetic. If your definition of a smartphone is something that can play Angry Birds, surf and play videos, you’re right, iPhone rocks. If we go by what the rest of the world think a smartphone is – something that can syn with your desktop, push email, efficient typing, multitaksing, cut & paste, make and hold a simple voice call and…hold a charge for more than few hours (more like couple of days), you want to stick to Blackberries. go troll somewhere else. Better yet, just get an iTouch and a flip LG phone.

“Sigh,” you are being ignorant.
You’re telling me that surfing videos and playing angry birds is not a “real” feature of a smartphone?
The fact is Sigh, the very definition of a “smartphone” has changed and you don’t seem to understand that.
You define smartphone as:
“something that can syn with your desktop, push email, efficient typing, multitaksing, cut & paste, make and hold a simple voice call and…hold a charge for more than few hours”
Well if that’s what a smartphone is to you, that’s just sad and outdated.
Are you telling me that all of this is not possible on iOS and Android phones??! Are you kidding me??!!
-There are plenty of android phones with physical keyboards (I am assuming this is what you imply by “efficient typing”).
-The battery life on the iPhone 4 is actually incredible. And if I used my iphone 4 like a blackberry, (sms, instant messaging, email, 2d brick-breaker, and low brightness) it would last days too! Blackberries don’t have some kind of magical battery life!
-push email, multitasking… this is all on iOS and Android as well!
Finally, you are ignoring all the powerhouse smartphone capabilities that the app store/market offers to iOS and android,
You boast that you can “sync with your desktop” on a blackberry. WOW! Don’t you realize that itunes is THE definition of desktop syncing??? Plus, forget about syncing with your desktop! The new definition of a smartphone is that it starts to replace the functions of your desktop. Heck, with the iOS app “ignition” I can remotely CONTROL my desktop.
Yes I can play angry birds on my iphone, and blackberry’s cannot That’s nothing to brag about.

I’m glad a Canadian tech company is doing well. As a Canadian and former HW engineer at Nortel it’s great hearing positive news. Speaking with a couple of former colleagues now at RIM they tell me there’s interesting projects they’re working on so I’ll be looking forward to an interesting 2011.

“Shin”. Wow (shrink), my bad. Didn’t know iOS and Android were capable of doing all the thing Blackberry can do. So, why is it that Blackbery is a feature phone and not a smartphone? Dim screen? Yeah, that’s bad for playing games and watching videos. As for “typing”, seriously, have you tried typing on some of the Android physical keyboards (the landscape slide outs)? There’s a reason why Moto DROID Pro and Dell Venue Pro are tryring to mimick the BB form factor, including the keyboard. Nothing is more efficient than BB physical keyboards. As for the battery life argument, you are right. Low screen resolution and less powerful processor do indeed extend the battery life. So does the ability to compress data. Ultimately, RIM made the decision that longer battery life was something that “smartphone” users would value.
Whatever the case may be, can’t argue with the fact that RIM continues to sell more devices and make more money than ever before despite all the naysayers.

The ongoing discussion between the iCult-followers and Patriotic True North faction are sometimes entertaining, sometimes boring.
Interested in some facts? Apple is not doing well with the iPhone, in actual numbers. Although the number of markets where the iPhone is available have been considerably increased (not least China as added!) and exclusive deals have ended, thus having a multiple number of operators selling iPhones, the number of iPhones shipped has been flat (or actually shrinking a little) fir 3 or 4 quarters in a row. Then, in Q3, shipment numbers finally went up somewhat, but that is most likely due to users ditching their older iPhones and getting the new iPhone 4. This is positive as it shows brand loyalty, but it is bad because very few new costumers are won over from the competition.
That RIM is selling phones in Canada – wow. They should. This is their home turf. It is like throwing a party because Nokia is selling in Finland. But I think RIM needs to re-invent itself. I don`t see how their platform is open to new developments, to new ideas and new applications. This pony`s tricks are limited, as we speak. Which, from a security management point of view, can be a good thing – but then again vendor agnosticism is an important security factor as well, and with Blackberry you are pretty much locked in to use other RIM-ware, too.
