Video: How should we test the durability of the Samsung Rugby II?

The Samsung Rugby II is available through TELUS, Bell and Rogers all on various pricing models. This is the latest rugged device to land in Canada and it meets military specs that can apparently resist shock, hot temperatures, water and dust. We did a quick overview of the hardware as it comes with a 1.3-inch external display and a 2.2-inch internal display (resolution of 240×320), GPS, Dual external speakers, holds up to 32GB with a microSD card, 2 megapixel camera and has overall dimensions are 10.2 x 5.2 x 2.2 cm and weighs surprisingly light at 100 grams.

In the past we’ve tested rugged devices by throwing them, dipping them in water and hitting it with a hammer. This time around we thought we’d leave it up to you to tell us how to test the durability of the Rugby II out. if you’re in the field working in intense locations you want a device that will last and take a few hits. Leave your comments below and tell us what situations you want us to demonstrate and we’ll report back with a video.

  3. My husband owns a powerwashing business in Canada, and is always looking for a phone that will stand up to freezing cold, wet conditions, plus being dropped, etc. He is really hard on phones, has gone through tons of them. The more durable, the better. Oh yeah, he sand blasts as well, so tiny particles of sand need to be kept out of the phone. Si I guess my test would mostly be the freezing cold wet conditions.

  5. How about throwing it from the top of CN Tower and putting it on railway tracks to be run over by the train or by TTC streetcar.

  6. With a name like rugby I say you test it precisely in that manner. Let the phone be the ball and get tackled a few dozen times.

  7. I had an old sanyo flip phone that wasnt rugged or durable but it stood up to a run over with my car with almost no damage except for some scratches no better way to test if a phone is durable then to run it over with a car and see how much damage there is.

  10. Can you guys pitch it like a baseball and have someone hit it with a aluminum baseball bat as hard as they can?

After that, can you guys have a truck run over it, possibly maybe a semi truck, or at least a dually wheel pick up truck.

I wanna know if it can withstand these events, if not I wont be buying one.

Thank you very much Mobilesyrup, you guys are awesome.

  12. Maybe… put it in the fire (or bake it?) and then drop it in water immediately after, then freeze it into an ice cube and do a “will it blend” on it. If its still intact + functional, maybe take a gun to it. If it’s still good after THAT… do a la mythbusters and just blow it up! haha…

  14. My brother-in-law would love if you simulated dry wall dust haha. Go sand something down. Maybe get some sawdust involved.

Also, see how easy it is to operate with work gloves on.

Finally, chuck it in a toolbox with tools and nails and screws, etc. and shake it around.

  15. The Rugby is supposedly waterproof but will it survive a dunk in oil (of any grade or viscosity) A waterproof phone that I owned (years ago) died immediately, after accidentally being dropped in an old drum of dirty oil.

  18. Simply set it in a cup of Tim Horton’s coffee, call the phone, and just let it sit for a good 10 minutes.

  25. Power wash a pair of jeans with the phone in the pocket, put the jeans in a dryer filled with drywall dust for a cycle, drag it behind a car for 10 blocks, chuck it at one of your peers at a reasonalble speed, put it into an empty paint can mixed with nails and have someone at home depot run it thought a mix cycle, take that paint can and kick it down an escartment, and then make a call.

That’ll test its duriblility, then you can run it over with a car or torch it, or give it to the blend guy.

  28. - Drop it in hot coffee.
    - Leave it outside overnight.
    - Toss it in the air a few times.

    If it survives those…

    - Run over it a few times with a car
    - Drop it off a 3-5 story building
    - Stick it in a toaster oven for 5 minutes set at 200-300F (Or expose it to fire briefly)

If it’s still going after some of those tests, then definitely go all out to destroy it

    - Throw it against a brick wall outside as hard as you can
    - Hit it with a baseball bat, go for distance!
    - Microwave oven!
    - Dunk it in oil, and optionally set it on fire.
    - Stick it in a container full of water, put said container in the freezer (or outside). Leave it there for a week.

If its still kicking after all that… seriously people, buy the phone ok? It’ll survive the apocalypse along with the cockroaches.

  29. Go to the local Rugby pitch and have the “Samsung Rugby” on the ground during a ‘Scrum’. All those beefy forward players with metal spikes and mud, there has to be mud!

  30. Just bought as a replacement for my old Motorola rubberized military spec phone that didn’t survive the washer and dryer.

Note that this phone is not rubberized.

Punt it with your work boot across the room so that it bounces off a wall and onto the floor (what I did numerous times to demo the ruggedness of my previous phone).

  31. put it in a bucket and have a bull s**t on it, because after one month of use I have concluded that this phone is a piece of s**t. Can’t anyone make a phone that is durable and will actually work well when needed?

  32. Just treat it kindly and only carry it in your pants pocket. That is how my husband treated his and after seven days the LCD displayed a picture of a yellow boulder. We took it in to TBay Tel and were told that my huband must have dropped it and broke the LCD. So Rugged I think not..especailly since nothing happened to this phone and they said they will not cover it since my husband must have dropped it. Nice to be called a liar!!! This after we just purchased this phone and two IPHONE 4S’s.
