MTS now “expects to fully launch HSPA services in the first quarter of 2011″

This could be a bit disappointing to some MTS customers. MTS announced way back on July 28th, 2009 that they were building out their HSPA network and had a targeted completion for the “end of 2010″. In their Q3 2010 report today it states that they are “now moving into a technical test phase and expects to fully launch HSPA services in the first quarter of 2011″. So it’s unfortunately delayed a bit. Kelvin Shepherd, President, MTS said “We are undergoing detailed testing of both the HSPA network and related systems and with that in mind, it makes sense to launch HSPA early in the new year when activity in our customer service channels is typically lower”.

No worries Manitobans – you still have the Motorola Milestone A854 and the BlackBerry Style 9670 coming.

  1. I’m not with mts but with Rogers. However this hspa network will be shared by both companies and this pisses me off to the billionth degree. We should have had 3G here in 2008. And not just in winnipeg. Just sad all these empty promises and release dates. Makes me want to live anywhere but Canada. Why do we pay so much and get nothing in Canada vs the rest of the world? And like others have said on previous posts regarding mts – the milestone is outdated and the style is a CDMA phone. And a piece of crap at that. Too bad bell and telus wouldn’t come to Manitoba with their hspa networks so we could get some real phones and a 3G network before the next coming of christ

  2. So by the end of March??? That’s another 5 five months with no guarantee that it won’t be moved again or any sort of guarantee that we’ll be getting anything better than a 3 year old phone at bleeding edge prices like the insanely overpriced Milestone. Sorry MTS, you’ll need to do better than that to keep my business.

  4. The MTS Connect in the picture is the very MTS Connect (Brandon) that my family has to deal with several times a year. It’s still run as if they’re a government institution (you can see the take-a-number thing on the yellow piller on the right.

MTS and Rogers customers, tell your carrier you’re NOT HAPPY! We’re constantly putting up with this stuff and going “meh, one day things will get better”.

This long just for 3G is HORRIBLE

  5. I’d prefer to wait and get a solid, reliable network than have it rushed and have problems in December.

Oh – and by the way, the “take-a-number” idea comes from a deli, not government – so you must be a hippy-veggie-lover or something not to know that.

    (I kid. Maybe.)

    • Owen we’ve been waiting since 2008 when we should have had 3G. Just so we can gauge how retarded you are can you tell us how much longer we should wait???….

  6. funny how they are now an entire YEAR behind the original promised date for the launch of the new network… MTS is just f*****g pathetic. I’m coming to the end of my contract with them and I cant wait to switch. Not only do they pull stupid crap like this, but they’ve screwed me in many other ways too (screwed up my contract 8 months in a row ! and claimed their network doesnt allow them to prevent me from accessing data… i****s, plus things like changing my service from one phone to another requires me to go to a store during regular hours and pay them $25. They should offer an option to do that online for free so that they can come somewhat close to matching how easy it is to do with Rogers…) Once Shaw launches wireless, MTS will hopefully be forced to give up – and its completely their fault.

  7. @Kdawg: First off, the reason we have relatively shittier cell phone service in Canada is because we are a SMALL population spread over a HUGE area. The cost to cover everyone in Canada is MUCH higher than in countries with high population densities. Manitoba is an especially bad case, as we got just under 1.5 million people (which is small) spread over an area larger than most European countries. This is the reason it takes so long. Yes, it sucks and they SHOULD have their s**t under control and have had it out on time like they originally said. Also, EVDO is technically a 3G network, just slower. HSPA+ which we are getting is considered a “3.5G” network as the speeds are quite fast. Once this network is up it will be on par with some of the fastest networks in the world. (besides WiMax from Spring). HSPA+ is a stepping stone to LTE, which is a true 4G network, but the standard isn’t even finished yet.

@Cody: The take a number thing is in the Rogers stores too (at least in Winnipeg), its not just an MTS thing.

@pj: It is not a YEAR late, it is a quarter late. The original launch date was near the end of 2010. It was ANNOUNCED in mid 2009.

  9. Having been in Manitoba twice, Vancouver & Toronto once, I reckon that consumers need to voice their opinions to the local, provincial and federal governments. I’ve driven and used mobile phones in many different countries in Europe and Africa. The choice of handsets on MTS is ridiculous. They should be forced by government to give consumers a better deal. The service in the Interlake area is horrid at times, right when you may need it if you’ve perhaps ditched your vehicle or hit a deer or bear. and the price that one pays for such rubbish service? MTS has many Manitobans by the short and curlies, knowing that there simply is no other service in many areas, and they have and continue to exploit that to the chagrin of most of their customers.

What’s with the delay in going live? They have consultants that’ve done this many times before. Well, they should, anyhow. Manitoba is one of the last places on the planet to get HSPA (outside of North America). and so what if they need to change their billing platform, this should’ve ben factored in properly.

The same goes for speed limits in the province. Why is it that other provinces (perhaps richer in natural resources) allow a 120 speed limit, but Manitobans get stuck travelling hug distances at 100 or 110? Did someone inadvertently go green before everyone else and decide that Manitobans should conserve energy by driving slower, or do they just want to raise more fines knowing that people will drive over 109/119?

Manitobans have had the piss taken out of them for long enough. It’s time for them to stand up and complain to regulators, ombudsmen and lawmakers.

  11. Didnt hear it from me but the reason for the delay is due to billing system issues. The pushed back luanch date of hspa+ for mts was Feb 1st but it has been pushed back further now. MTS is in a pickle because they can’t test the towers outside of the city or else that will give Rogers access to the hspa network outside of winnipeg. Rogers and MTS have an agreement that by March 31st, regardless whether MTS is ready for hspa or not, must turn on there hspa towers outside of winnipeg. I know for a fact that MTS dealers have not recieved their hspa in-class training for the new sysem called “APEX”. So having said that, the latest time they can launch it is March 31st, 2011. Mark that on your calendars girls and boys

  12. Think about the fact that MTS Allstream is primarily a regional provider that you are expecting to play at a national level. You are huffing and puffing about the fact that you are being left behind with the HSPA+ network. Think of it this way, Rogers and MTS are both responsible here and could have had the network up faster, if you wanted a product that they couldn’t stand behind, or volunteered your entire city of customers to pay more monthly. Things things take time and money, and most people don’t realize that had these companies forced something of this magnitude out the door, more clients of both carriers would’ve been unhappy with the results. Furthermore, I’m an AVID MTS customer. I’ve never been unhappy with the service I’ve received but I’ll certainly acknowledge those who have. Each company has major set backs when new networks are created and optimized for their clients, so before you go ragging on what isn’t being done, think of all the things that are that you just haven’t had the gall to ask about.
