BlackBerry Torch 9800 delay impacting all Canadian carriers?

Late last night we reported that Bell delayed the anticipated launch of the BlackBerry Torch 9800. This was supposed to be available next week on September 24th. We’ve learned more about the reason and are hearing that it’s not just Bell, but all carriers. The reasons are ranging from “production line problems from Rim” to “Network/firmware problems”. Rogers, Virgin, and TELUS have yet to update their site or confirmed the new release date.

Update #1: Virgin has come forth on Twitter that “the BlackBerry Torch is now coming on October 1.”

Update #2: It looks like Bell has changed the date from October 1st to simply sat “Coming Soon”

Update #3:Best Buy has now changed their pre-order page to say “Coming Soon on your choice of network”

  1. is it known it MTS is going to get this?
I’m personally with Rogers and will never go back to MTS.. but I know a few people on MTS that are hoping this phone will be launched with them.

…but considering MTS’s new network is coming at less than a snail’s pace…

  3. I have the iphone 4, samsung galaxy S, but had a chance to use the blackberry torch the other day; it definitely isn’t an outdate smartphone from RIM. Definitely a great device, could replace the other 2 units I have.

  4. I think this is craptacular, I mean – regardless I was(am)waiting for the Samsung Captivate (See my other harassing posts about it and Rogers, Lmao)

But it still was my kinda.. FallBack Device, for the 6GB Plan.

OI vey, these Canadian Carriers are just ridiculously incompetent in comparison to some European and American ones.

Not all the time – just times like these :\

Also, for Alex: I dunno, MTS is usually a snail when it comes to expansion AND devices. I mean, they JUST got the Storm2 that’s practically been discontinued in all other Carriers. Their HTC (Android) phone.. is a very generic formed device, so .. I am betting if they get the Torch it really won’t be for a very very very very long time(Maybe I am wrong though).

I wish they would, their Plans aren’t too shabby, but as it stands.. no reason to switch to them yet.

  6. Ya you know what else is friggin new these days. Everybody can say look at this great device and what it can do. But nobody can make them work or make them available to the public on the dates they should be. Electronics world moves fast so sorry rim I’m sure this is a great product. But where was it two years ago when it shouldve been out. I’m a BB fan but have gone to iPhone 4 strictly because I could get one and it has a real display and a processor. I don’t know who’s fault it is for this possibly delayed launch but regardless, ridiculous. Don’t advertise you have an amazing product coming out for many months then you can’t deliver it cause it might have software issues. F off. Just another joke. And being as I’m with Rogers I know first hand that they will not give any information on time if at all, because their heads are usually found extremely far up their asses.

    • Totally agree, Canadians get screwed over yet again buy a Canadian Company. I have been waiting for a new BB since I got the Storm 1 and now this BS. The person who is responsible for this should be fired and publicly humilated

  7. This comes as absolutely no suprise. RIM is horrible with timelines, and not just their initall guesses but their secondary ones as well. This unit won’t hit stores till late October. Guaranteed.

  8. 600,000 shipped to U.S. already is hardly lackluster sales it just doesn’t compare to the 600,000 pre orders the iphone 4 had and 3 million in sales in it’s first 3 days i believe.

  9. There are a few things to note. RIM shipped 12 million devices this quarter. That is quite a bit. And yes RIM may be slow at delivering products, but there are more aspects then just RIM delaying the delivery. iPhone sold 1.5 or 1.7 million in first week but was in 5 markets so it does make a difference.
However the processor and the screen should have been better on the device but overall there has been a vast improvement in the software. they are on the right track.
And owning 42% of market share or that is what it was in May is no small deal. Yes it dropped by .7% but so did iPhones. Android is growing fast and will be who RIM will really have to compete with.

  10. Yep. I am sad however. If this thing had better specs I wouldve waited. Nothing beats BB notification system. Simply awesome.

  11. It’s a great looking phone but really I agree I think they should launch to Canadians first for a change. I’m tired of this, aside from the fact that AT&T helped develop it, which probably amounted to some girls in a room going “oh please make it pink” it is irritating.

    • Never have I seen such a dumb post. Go take a peek at RIMs public stockholders. You are likely unemployed based on your assumptions on market research as well.

  13. My ATT unlocked unit works just fine up here. I think that the ‘software’ they’re having trouble with is our carrier’s BLOATWARE.

Just launch the thing, we’re not waiting for the stupid BLOATWARE, we all hide it anyway – and thx RIM for screwing the hosers yet again- eh? How sad for you…

Just go and buy an unlocked unit for 500 bucks and don’t get tied to these carrier leeches. Our telecom sector up here needs a fumigation

  15. My phone cratered in August. I impatiently awaited the announced Sept 16th release of the Blackberry Torch 9800 and delayed getting a different phone only to be disappointed. I foolishly waited for the Sept 24th release date only to be disappointed once again. Bell and Telus had the integrity to confirm ahead of time that they would not meet the Sept 24th date but Rogers obviously did not possess the same honesty and openness to their customers. If I had known in August about what a fiasco this would be, I would not have waited and feel foolish for having been suckered in by the false promises. No “normal” business would operate this way making promises to clients and not delivering. Whoever is making these decisions should be fired and would in any other business. While the Torch was my “first” choice, I will be buying my “second” choice tomorrow as a small protest that you cannot treat customers with such lack of honesty and integrity in the promises you make. I would not treat my clients this way and do not plan to put up with such nonsense any longer.

  16. My phone also kicked the bucket a few weeks ago and I was going to try and put up with the stupid loner loser phone that you get from Rogers untill the Torch came in on the 24th. Well screw you Rogers you can have you phone back and stick it where the sun don’t shine. I’m glad my contract is up in a few months because I am now boycatting Rogers for being a horable bussiness and leading people to belive that they can actually produce. I’m not putting up with this crap anymore and no other Canadian should either. Everyone that was dissapointed by this and let down by Rogers should let those jerks know how you feel!

Can you manufacture a Torch for yourself?
    No?
