–
Montréal, September 9, 2010 – Videotron is pleased to announce the eagerly awaited launch of its state-of-the-art HSPA+ mobile communication network. Videotron’s 3G+ service will afford Québec consumers and business access to the latest technology at last and provide superior value for the money.
“We asked our customers about their needs when it comes to mobile service,” said Robert Dépatie, President and CEO of Videotron. “We listened to them and we got the message. Today, we are coming out with new, easy-to-understand plans that deliver more and suit every need.
“Videotron’s 3G+ service reflects the goal we have pursued throughout this project: providing the best possible customer experience through one-stop shopping to make life easier for consumers. Not only is our offering highly advantageous in this respect but it is particularly attractive for our existing customers, who can get exceptional rates. We remain true to our policy of offering substantial discounts to customers who choose our service bundles.”
SERVICE OFFERINGS
Infinity at the best price!
As of today, Videotron is offering simple, economical mobile communication services with a full range of residential and Business plans. For example, the Infinite Québec plan includes unlimited local and long-distance calling anywhere in Québec regardless of the other party’s telephone carrier, starting at $49.95 per month. For only $6.00 more, customers can add unlimited emails and messaging anywhere in Québec.
All plans include free unlimited local and long-distance calls between residential and business customers with mobile or cable telephone services from Videotron.
The largest urban zones
The Infinite urban zone plans, another innovative component of Videotron’s new mobile service, offer unlimited calls within the zone. Videotron’s urban zones are by far the largest of any service provider.
For example, the Montréal zone extends from Rigaud in the west to L’Assomption in the east, and from Saint-Sauveur in the Laurentians in the north to Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu in the south, an area of approximately 3,200 km². The Québec City urban zone covers the area between Portneuf to the west, Montmagny to the east, Stoneham to the north and Laurier-Station to the south, covering approximately 5,700 km².
Attractive options
Videotron is also offering the industry’s most advantageous call management and messaging options, an important consideration for mobile phone users, who typically add options to their plans. For example, customers will be able to send up to 500 messages (counting SMS, MMS and emails) for just $5.00, 2,500 messages for $10.00 and unlimited messages for $15.00. Customers will also be able to add extras such as voice mail to their plans for $4 per month for the first option and $2 for each additional option.
The fastest high-speed mobile Internet network
Videotron’s mobile Internet key will support data transfer speeds of up to 21 mbps over Videotron’s 3G+ network, the fastest network around according to our current analyses. The network will eventually rev up to lightning-fast mobile speeds of up to 42 mbps, thanks to Dual-Carrier HSPA+ technology.
Something for everyone: 12 handsets, including 4 firsts
Videotron has also lined up a selection of best-in-class handsets to meet every need. All will support access to illico mobile and remote programming of the customer’s personal video recorder. Customers will be able to choose among the most advanced mobile handsets on the market, including the Google Nexus One (HTC), which is being offered by an operator for the first time in Canada, making Videotron the first Canadian service provider to carry a handset loaded with the Android 2.2 Froyo operating system; the Nuvifone A5, the first Garmin phone in Canada, with free traffic info and alerts included for three years; the Motorola XT720 and the entry-level Huawei U3200.
Videotron is also the only industry player to offer a 30-day full satisfaction or money back guarantee. Customers are not required to make any commitment.
Largest selection of French-language and local content
Customers will enjoy one of the richest selections of mobile content in Canada, particularly for French- language and Québec content. After launching illico web in June 2010, Videotron is now launching illico mobile, giving customers access to 1,000 hours of free content, a catalogue of nearly 2,000 television programs and series, 27 television channels, 9 of them live, and 45 Galaxie music channels. “Our new mobile service will quickly become a major platform for the dissemination and promotion of Québec culture,” said Pierre Karl Péladeau, President and CEO of Quebecor Media. Videotron’s mobile shop will carry nearly 30,000 items (music, ringtones, wallpapers, games, etc.).

But unlike WIND and Mobilicity, Videotron have some real coverage outside city centers, making them a real alternative to the big 3. When their network expand, it will be good enough for most Quebec residents (save a few regions such as Gaspésie and Côte-Nord were even Rogers have poor or no coverage).
They paid twice what WIND paid for frequencies to Industry Canada and there is a reason.

Actually, i’m not that impressed. 32.95 unlimited is only if you have 3 other services (TV, internet, land line…), otherwise it’s 42.95 which is similarly priced to the other providers. I’m not interested in Videotrons other services (don’t watch TV and their internet rates are terrible) so there’s not much to get excited about if you’re not already with Videotron.
On top of that, their flagship phones are a generation behind.
A solid entrance and it’s good to have some fresh competition but I don’t think this will shake things up much…

I’m pretty sure you’re missing a few zeroes at the end of their initial investment in the AWS spectrum. They paid more for Quebec alone, than Wind paid for the rest of Canada.
Since they own the entire system in Quebec, why not just make it so there is no long distance anywhere in the province? And what are they doing for roaming outside of their zones and province? I hope they can come to some kind of agreement with Wind.

Infinite Urban Zone (unlimited calls to anyone with Videotron + $0.25/min to people who are with Rogers, Telus or Bell)
Infinite Quebec (unlimited calls to anyone)
I am still trying to find out why there was no news about Toronto. Seeing they did buy a spectrum for that area. At least Ottawa covered in 2011.
All in all its a pretty good attempt by Quebecor-Videotron.
Guess I have to get Videotron Infinite Quebec + 500 MB Data. Sucks that it will cost me $80.50 a month (they should lower it to $70.50 for non-services and for all services to $60.50). Now that be a great deal.
Anyways I did some comparing…
Comparison
- Fido CityFido 4000 + Value Pack 10 + 500 MB = $95 (2G/3G coverage only)
- Videotron Infinite Quebec + Messaging + 500 MB = $80.50 ($70.95 — 3 services) (AWS 3G coverage only)
- Fido CityFido 2000 + Value Pack 10 + 500 MB = $75 (2G/3G coverage only)
- Rogers Voice + Data 300 Combo + Value Pack 12 = $74.98 (2G/3G coverage only)
- Fido 35 + Value Pack 10 + 500 MB = $70 (2G/3G coverage only)
- Videotron Infinite Urban zone + Messaging + 500 MB = $64.50 ($54.95 — 3 services) (AWS 3G Coverage only) [Infinite only between Videotron customers]
- Chatr Unlimited Talk + Text = $45 (2G/3G coverage) [no data]
—
- Solo So Low 30 + Feature Combo 10 + 500 MB = $65 (CDMA + 3G coverage)
- Telus Voice + Data 50 Combo + Package 15 = $65 (CDMA + 3G coverage)
- Virgin Smartphone 50 + Unlimted SMS = $65 (CDMA + 3G coverage)
- Bell Smartphone 50 + Bundle 12 = $62 (CDMA + 3G coverage)
- Public Mobile Unlimited Talk + Text = $40 (CDMA only) [no data]
Comparison (outside of Quebec)
- T-Mobile Unlimited = US$79.99 (2G + AWS 3G coverage)
- Mobilicity Unlimited = $65 (AWS 3G coverage only)
- WIND Mobile Unlimited = $50 (AWS 3G coverage only)

Great start up by Videotron but really 3 year contracts again. Was hoping to see a max of only 2 years. Why is the Huawei U7519 $200 off contract when Mobi has it now for $100 and Wind for $50 (after rebate), same goes with Samsung Gravity 2 and Bold 9700. Videotron should have a larger buying power to bring non-contract prices down. However Nexus One price is AWSOME!

So, assuming you have no other services with Videotron, you are supposed to pay $59.50 per month for unlimited calling with free QC-wide long-distance and free incoming text messages but no outgoing text. Wind gives you unlimited calling with Canada-wide (!) long distance and free outgoing text to Canada AND the States for $45 (which can go down to $25 or less if you are a student or happen to be at one of their promotional events). Why does everyone seem so happy about videotron’s plans then?! It’s not a good deal at all even if the phones are priced ok-ish.

If WIND or Mobilicity had coverage in Quebec I would have went with them, but they have no coverage.
Videotron great for people who don’t leave Quebec often or at all.
I would like to switch to them, but they should at least drop the price by $10/month. Plus I am still not happy about the Quebec-only data.
I compared everything once again, but I left out 2 plans from Rogers.

Always good to have some extra competition.
On the down-side:
1) Looks like text messages to the US aren’t included in the texting plans and therefore are billed as an “international text.”
2) Caller-ID is still an extra charge.
Look forward to Shaw entering the fray here in western Canada. Gives me some idea of what I might expect when they roll out their service.

Their plans are a joke, and their advertising is deliberately misleading. Look at their Infinite Urban Zone plan, which is supposed to compete with Wind, Public Mobile and others. At first, you’d think you’d get this for $33. But that’s ONLY if you buy other services from them (cable tv, home phone, etc.) The real price for this plan is $43. So you think you’ll get a decent unlimited plan for $43? Read again. It only includes calling to OTHER Videotron customers. Calling anyone else? pay 25c/minute. Did anyone really think that Videotron will change their old ways?

Great start.. ..! But I am disappointed that the Outaouais is left to one of the last areas in their implementation timelines( April 2011, if all goes well..!!) . The Outaouias is the third most populated region in Québec, but Videotron continuously treats it like it’s some “Backwater” county.
Ex; I can get more HD channels in the Saguenay-Lac-St-Jean than in Gatineau..
I find Videotron’s underlying message disturbing and somewhat insulting to Outaouais residents.

Just a side note: A new wireless service is launched in Canada, and the editors of mobile syrup don’t think that it’s important enough to be featured story at the top of the site?

However Wind’s ad is prominently shown everyday on top of the page while doing very little in the first year of business including old news about Mobilicity and considering VT will actually begin the real competition they only get a simple mention, even though their launch was brilliant compared to the others and done professionally…they never rushed in with lies/broken promises/getting on their knees begging Canadians to accept them and actually came out fighting on the first day with some pretty cool ideas to make the Big Three respond.
You guys…a laugh per minute!

JAWG is such a cracker jack. They paid for that ad obviously, if I ran a site, and an advertiser paid, I would keep it up.

Too bad it’s way more expensive than others for those who don’t believe in subsidizing them with 3 other services.

As far as I am aware the most desirable Nexus One in N. America (the 850mhz model) is effectively discontinued, since no company who uses that frequency is stocking the phone anywhere in the world, and I believe Google only give the 1700mhz model out for developer use. Unless things have changed in the last few months of course.

And I am very happy I got mine when I had the chance, well worth the $650 (all in) I paid for it.
