RBC says BlackBerry Torch 9800 sales topped 150,000

If you’re following RIM’s newest BlackBerry Torch 9800 then you’ll remember when RIM co-CEO Mike Lazaridis said “this is one of the most significant launches in RIM’s history”. You’re also probably hearing about its mixed reviews. There no official word from RIM or AT&T about actual sales numbers but some analysts are saying it’s getting “underwhelming” sales. Today RBC Capital Markets analysts Stifel Nicolaus has pegged the number Torch sales to be around 150,000. One possible reason for slow sales is that customers are holding off getting the device and waiting until the new BlackBerry 6 OS is officially released and putting it on their current device.

The current cost for the Torch is $199.99 on a 2-year through AT&T, so this is what we could expect to pay on a 3-year contract when it launches in Canada with TELUS, Rogers, Bell and Virgin. Another possible sign of poor sales is that retailers Amazon and Wirefly have already discounted the Torch price to $99.99 on a 2-year contract. Research firm iSuppli estimated the total cost to build one BlackBerry Torch 9800 is $183 USD (parts are $171 plus $12 for manufacturing).

  1. Well 150k in it’s first 3 days isn’t bad at all. I guess the company fell for it’s own hype though and, I guess, expected to create a larger number of new BB users than they would actually get.

I’m sure if the prices on Amazon and Wirefly stay, sales will go up. I think cost was the biggest factor in it’s sales.

  3. they shud’ve announced a blackberry 6 update to current phones after the release of torch and it’s $99 on a 2 yr contract with data mandatory. RIM is still covering it’s costs from at&t. That makes it sound as if it’s selling under cost. There are a lot of $0 phones out there are they made for free?

  4. I think RIM did an excellent job with the design of this phone.

However, they really dropped the ball when it comes to the hardware specifications on this device. Its hardware is more than a year behind the competition.

I was following this phone for a long time and decided to get a Galaxy S phone instead… why pay this much for a device that is already outdated by a year in an industry that is growing so quickly?

  5. What a lot of people are ignoring is that people don’t buy phones based on hardware specs, but what it can do.

BBM e-mail is the best. BB phone quality is the best.

It is true that the screen is of poorer quality and that the processor is slower (good for battery life), but if you want a communication device, this is the best out there. If you want a multimedia device, get an iphone.

    • Actually, reviews seem to suggest that battery life on the Torch is worse than the iPhone and various Android devices that have much more capability.

  6. Most BB users are simply not that interested in having fun with their smartphone. Users that do look for internet experience, multimedia playback, as well as games are more than likely to get iphone or Android phones.

  7. @HH: I’m not sure what you are basing any of this on unless you’ve used one…?

My BB is invaluable for work and email; but I cannot agree considering the leaps and bounds Apple/Google have made with their email and messaging interfaces and core functionality.

RIM seems to only think about professional use and has completely left every other functionality of a smartphone behind.

  8. Everyone has a different preference for what they want in a phone. The difference is that iPhone / Android users have a slew of apps that customize the existing OS to generally whatever they want.

Blackberry OS, while -decent-, is severely lacking in applications to not only enhance its shortfalls, but to make it go above and beyond what you would traditionally expect a phone to do.

XDA Developers is basically an illustration of what the community can do for a phone.

    • We should always wonder how many applications are really used and how useful they really are! Many applications are simply short cuts and cute application (cheering apps, farting apps, etc). Then you are left with applications that are available on most phones that are useful. They are better designed, better built and more secure than iPhones. RIMs only fault is not being as goog as Apple to market its products.

  9. charging customers more then a phone is worth, tripling tha cost to claim theres an actual discount and then forcing them in to a term contract for over paying in tha first place.. wow i thought manufacturers & cellphone providers were more honest then that… LMMFAO !!

Come on now we all know that even with tha newest OS & there webkit browser (that was built by a toronto company that started by making a windowsmobile browser then was bought by RIM) is still tha most outdated OS/Platform..
people must forget about blackberry when they make that claim of WM..

blackberries are grate dont get me wrong. But they on average they WAY TO OVER PRICED compared to there competition.
**and im not refering to apples overpriced equiptment – but rim isnt apple – i respect rim lol**
