So what do you do when you’re already offering a $150 credit to port your number over, plus giving 50% off plans… you follow it up by giving between $20 to $40 off the price of a handset. That’s what WIND Mobile has done, perhaps a back to school sale or clearing stock for some new devices. The offer is good until September 15th and sees the devices drop to the following:
BlackBerry Bold 9700: $430 (was $450)
Samsung Gravity 2: $110 (was $130)
Huawei E181 Data Stick: $130 (was $150)
Huawei U1250: $50 (was $70)
Huawei U7519: $50 (was $90)
Huawei U8100: $140 (was $160 and probably the cheapest Android around)
Nokia 5230: $160 (was $180)
HTC Maple: $180 (was $200)
Update: Reading over the terms and conditions, just so you know it says the following: “Rebates will be issued within 10-12 weeks of the end of the offer. Rebates will be paid by in Canadian dollars by cheque and mailed via Canada Post Letter Mail to the address on your WIND account. Timely cashing of the rebate check is a necessary condition to obtain a rebate under this offer. In the event your rebate check is not cashed within 90 days, the rebate offer expires and is void. Cheques are void if not cashed within 90 days from the issuance date and cannot be reissued.”
Check it out over at WIND
i’m sorry wind but you have garbage phones.

while this is great for the customer, it shows how hurting Wind Mobile is right now for business and cash.
If you take a close look at the financial reports by Orascom (the guys funding Wind), you can see that
1) Wind is losing money (obvious for any start up)
but 2) they aren’t even paying back the interest that they owe on the debt – they are just tacking it onto the bill.
Wind can’t even generate the cash to pay back interest, let alone save some for itself. They are in a very negative situation of taking all their revenue to feed back to their regular costs such as labour etc and property rental costs – but that’s it.
this can’t last for very long

Say what you want, but $140 for an Android phone is damn good. Yes I know people will b***h about the processor speed, but it’s more than enough if all you’re going to do is post to Twitter and FB…

I understand where wind mobile is targeting but I think that they could grab more customers if they had better phone selections. more brand name phones (not necessary smart phone, just a simple phone) would be nice, because their UI and OS is usually a better built and design wise its better.

The Nokia 5230 is what you are looking for. It is selling like hotcakes in the US at T-Mobile and it even comes with free GPS navigation in 70 countries (without having to get a data plan).

Still, i remember back in the day when Fido had crazy phones that no other carrier had in Canada : the P800, P900, P910 !! They had super expensive high end phones and yet, they were the “little” carrier.
It saddens me when i look at Wind and all i see are some old low end devices.. this company has SO much potential and they’re wasting it by giving pple the feeling of a cheap brand with cheap phones.

yeah the line up isn’t that great..but how much is an average customer willing to spend on a phone with no contract pricing? Not much..besides, you have the option of bringing in a phone that’s compatible with their network so nothing should be stopping you.

mistermister if you had a brain you would realize that orascom is doing this to not dilute its other brands and that wind is much mroe a seperate company compared it how the other companys are connected
this way is wind sinks and fails all they companys dont immediately collapse

BlackBerry, Samsung, Nokia, HTC, and Huawei are all brand name phones… I’m surprised you haven’t heard of them. You’re probably one of those arrogant iPhone people who think that Apple is the only brand that’s an actual brand

Sure they’re all brand name phones.. but they’re still low end phones ! Where are the high end HTC phones ? What about the hight end Motorola smart phones ?
Is there a smart phone in this lineup that actually has a Cortex-A8 CPU ? The answer is no.

The Blackberry bold is a low end phone huh?
Yeah they can have more selection as phones, but they need to pay for the handsets they have now, give them time! New ones will come eventually, Telus Bell and Rogers didnt have much of a selection when they first started either

If Wind wants to be the “mainstream” wireless service provider, they really have to bring in some high-end phone. Those garbage phones should not have been put on the shelves in the first place.

Well, I just put my money where my mouth is, and picked-up a Huawei U8100 from Wind yesterday. I did not port my number to Wind yet. I did get the 12-month half-price infinite data plan ($17.50/mo) and unlimited nationwide calling ($45/mo).
Some initial observations:
The good: Android 2.1. Very decent UI and video playback performance. Surprisingly good AGPS, accelerometers and compass. Charges with USB. Standard 1/4″ headphone jack. Internal micro SD slot.
Mediocre: Relatively small resistive touch screen with LCD display. 1150 mAh battery is smallish. 3D graphics push it to the edge of its abilities.
The bad: Occasionally dropped data connection in some areas. I’ve disabled data roaming, so this may be when it switches to Wind Away in some low-coverage areas.
Overall: Definitely an entry-level priced phone ($160). Nowhere near the quality of a Samsung Galaxy S, but very good value for the money (close to 1/4 the price).
For being in the Vancouver market for less than 3 months, coverage is better than I expected. I’m tempted to port my number over, but I want to do a bit more testing of coverage before I make such a leap.

Wind sucks! They need better phones! I’m not touching them until they have better phones! In the meantime I’m going to continue to get ripped off to the point that I’m losing far more money waiting for better phone then just getting any of Winds phones for the time being.
Sorry, but saying their phone line up is crap is so tired. Yes it could be better, and I personally want a Desire or something but I just said to myself, I do NOT want to be in any way paying Rogers, Bell or Telus for anything what so ever. So I went to Wind and grabbed U1250 and I haven’t looked back since.
A pretty and fast web device would be nice but the lack of paying for my phone service (150 credit) since May would like to laugh at you and you and your “dur I’m waiting for better phones”. lol So yeah, I could pay 40 bucks for a 25 dollar plan on Rogers for 6 months while waiting or pay nothing but the (at the time) 70 dollar phone..HMMMMM.
I can wait ON Winds service thank you very much!

If you read the TOS (terms of service) from Rogers, Bell and Telus, it forbids to use a phone that they didn’t sell you. With Wind you can bring your own AWS phone if you wish, you can pick any AWS phone you want from somewhere else and use with them without big fuss.
Don’t be a sheep waiting for your carrier to bring the phone you want, may I introduce you to online shopping?

I like to read things so I’m going to point things out here.
This 20 buck rebate thing is a promo targeted for students going back to school. You know, if you read the Wind blog announcing it.
You can now put your tinfoil hat back on and think it’s a big conspiracy with Orascom.

Most of the money Orascom spent was for the licenses, the losses they spent on Wind infrastructure is probably much much much lower and losses there would not be a problem…I think fail in terms that eventually Wind could fail as a provider without putting too much capital in that by still being able to sell the licenses to either the Big Three or an outside source making them valuable.Someone in the US told me that Orascom needs some assets that T-mobile has overseas, wouldn’t it be nice if they eventually they bought it in the future or Tony the Gigolo was out of the picture. It seems with all the funds Oeascom supposedly has they Would assist Wind a lot more if they wanted it to be a complete success by helping to build the network stronger to create a reputation, yet they have never done this and possibly their real assets are only on paper where they may be forced to sell to not bring down their whole empire…I guess we’ll just have to see.

At least they made the most of what they could….yes they could stretch out their higher end phones a LOT better…but I can kind of see what they are trying to do…for the high end users they have the Bold…for the Android they introduced one(not the best mind you but a reasonably priced one to tide us over until better comes soon), they have touchscreen AND messaging devices with querty keypads. They have a no frills entry level phones. They have the HTC maple for the people who want a smartphone but dont want to pay for a blackberry….they did diversify pretty well with the limited handsets they they have. I think in their first year they did really well with what they could.

Statements like the following make you wonder how Wind got into the Canadian market in the first place with a backer like Orascom, considering their corrupt history that is well known throughout the world why did our government so easily over-turn the CRTC’s decision with no real disclosures or attempt to actually justify anything they did like complete cowards…too bad Wind Fanboys don’t have a brain to stand on and so easily support a corrupt corporation for slightly lower phone rates. And they claim the Big Three are corrupt…absolutely laughable and hilarious.

They have all gotten there because they greased someone along the way. If you don’t grease someone you will never be permitted to get that big.

@tbr:
True enough and some even cross the line badly, example MONSANTO who supposedly sold a vaccine that was supposed to stop certain bacterias in chickens although research failed and knowingly sold it to the Chinese government also knowing it could be used for alternative purposes…finally when SARS broke out there were some connections that indicated experiments went performed and the epidemic may have been related. So,these companies are the worse and no comparison…but when you consider the extreme bribes, tax evasion, dealings with dictators, ties with espionage in Pakistan, criminal activities, payments to web-sites to keep quiet/etc I think in the communication industry they are the absolute worse and are totally void of integrity. If Wind teamed up with T-Mobile I wouldn’t be so much against them, yet in my opinion regarding who is in charge together they are garbage and not good for Canada…of course Windies don’t care about what is right or wrong and want to pretend Wind will save our nation which is a joke.
