Public Mobile to launch a couple new phones, plus data

Public Mobile now is in full swing with operations in Toronto and Montreal. About a month ago they were having some network issues and have slowly been increasing the number of cell sites and expanded their coverage. When opened their doors back in March they also announced 4 devices: ZTE C78, Kyocera Tomo, Samsung R312 and the Kyocera G2G0. These are the same devices that are currently on the store shelves… but not for long.

We’ve been informed that Public will be releasing 2 more devices in the September/October time frame. One of these will hopefully be made available for the busy-back-to-school period and the brands to expect are a ZTE and a Kyocera…. most likely it’s going to be a ZTE slider (probably the Essenze) and a Kyocera QWERTY device. We don’t have any info on pricing or exact release dates but it’s good to hear that a refresh is in the works.

On another note, even though they state on their site that “Public Mobile at this time, does not provide mobile data services such as email, web browsing and instant messenger”…you can expect data to come to Public as well. No word on timing but yes, a data device and plan will be making their way over to Public Mobile.

(Thanks Tipster!)

  1. I’d like to see Public Mobile do well. It was a good decision for them to launch in Montreal. Hopefully next they’ll expand to Vancouver.

    • PM only bought wireless spectrum in Toronto and Montreal. So no Vancouver service, at least not right now.

  2. There’s no way they can provide data with only 5Mhz of spectrum. LOL

The “data” they’re probably thinking to offer would probably of the walled garden variety type with a built in twitter and facebook app and maybe a wap browser. I really don’t see them being able to do it otherwise unless they acquire more spectrum in future auctions.

  3. Ha! I’ve been saying it for awhile, Public Mobile is the one to watch! They’ve got a huge region to play with. Not even wind mobile can claim quebec as one of their markets! That being said, I’m starting to see more and more public mobile users in the gta. With improved coverage, data and phone selection, public mobile stands to benefit the most from rise in competition!

  4. Data = 14.4kbps internet speed from the early 1990′s.

“Blazing fast data speeds! You can download a full facebook WAP page in only 5min!!! WOW!”

    • PM is set to upgrade their network in the future to LTE (3.9G) just like Sprint did, that currently runs the HTC EVO 4G on it.

  5. public mobile was dead before it started… $35 with a $5 credit at mobilicity for unlimited province wide talk + text, caller id, call waiting, three way calling, voicemail all of which could be done on a Blackberry Bold 9700…

  7. Why would anyone go with Public? Their phones only work with their network. So basically you kinda are on a contract.

    • Why would anyone go with Rogers? They are the largest…Charge the most…and are affectionately known as “Robbers” …Why? Because people see a perceived value for their service…Public Mobile offers a good value with affordable phones…Their target audience is unlikely to switch…and their phones are dirt cheap to boot…So again….people go with Public Mobile because they see a perceived value in their service.

  8. I think the main reason to go with Public would be because their plans are actually really good. Not a bad price for the amount of features included. Their unlimited talk is nearly identical to the unlimited talk plan from Chatr, but $11 cheaper.

  10. Public Mobile will not last. The owner is an old bell AND rogers exec. Their plans are not anything special when you consider that their network performance will do very poorly with data. They are using outdated cell tower technology. WIND Mobile is where it is at. They are using the latest technology and operate on an all IP based network created to provide fast data speeds. I hate to sound like a fanboy but WIND realizes that data is the future, hence very reasonable data plans. Public Mobile offers too little and too late. Someone should tell Alek Krstajic that 1999 called and they want their old CDMA technology back.

    • Chris, with all due respect, you’re missing the point. PM isn’t trying to be another Bell, Telus, Rogers or Wind for that matter. It’s simply and truly, an Unlimited phone service. Data would be a bonus.

If you research CDMA it’s a valid network like any other. It’s not too long ago Bell and Telus used this network exclusively and currently still support it.

PM is set to upgrade their network in the future to LTE (3.9G) just like Sprint, that runs the 4G (LTE 3.9G) HTC EVO on it.

  11. @Rogerswind: That’s true, didn’t think of that. At least Public has service in Montreal.

    • JAWG, everybody knows you’re a troll around here and most people will just skip over your comment altogether because you really have nothing good to contribute to this discussion, just angry rantings.

I wouldn’t be surprised if you already work for Bell, Rogers, or Telus by day and troll mobile syrup by night.

  14. Here’s the realization I’ve had. It’s not the phone (device) it’s the plan. PM has all that I need and so I’ve switched from my over-hyped and priced Rogers and Bell accounts.

Don’t get me wrong, I love my 3 BlackBerry’s and 2 iPhones, but I don’t love the plans. But at some point we not only have to have competition, but we have to force Bell, Rogers and Telus to stop charging for over-priced voice and data. Last estimate was a 5000% mark-up.

I have Unlimited voice, text and Canadian long distance for $40 a month AND my phone works everywhere I’ve needed it to. At some point you have to stop “wanting” the hottest and newest, fastest device, you can’t even use without being worrying about your data and minutes. Come on! That’s a ridiculous way to exist.

As far as Mobilicity and Wind go, PASS. You might get more than the evil 3, but you’re also paying 65-75$ a month and that’s ridiculous.

As far as data and PM. If I had a single email address working on my device, I’d be complete. For now I use my PC and tell people to call or text me, because I have Unlimited.

  16. @Chris:

If everyone skips through my comments it’s only the Wind FANBOYS who are angry about the truth that never have a logical rebuttal and probably are the ones who have no job where they need the cheapest service possible regardless if it is attached to a corrupt corporation like Orascom or not, plus most of you lie about Wind which is the only way you can get new customers that eventually leave unsatisfied and cut up our Canadian providers fairly because YOU signed contracts for those expensive phones you can’t afford…what teens think of me on MS doesn’t concern me since most of you are brain dead anyway clinging to each other like the real trolls and the simple fact that in reality the Big Three are growing at a fast pace where the new entrants are struggling with loses including lousy service.
