Walmart shows TELUS HTC Desire no-contract priced at $448.83

There’s still no official pricing from TELUS as to what the anticipated HTC Desire pricing will come in at. It “coming soon” though. A couple weeks ago we posted a screenshot that shows this 2.1 Android-powered device to be priced at $79.99 on a 3-year. Thanks to a tipster who works at Walmart for sending this pic that shows the no-contract price to coming in at an impressive $448.83. Stellar price for that device… again, all speculation until TELUS make it official.

(Thanks tipster!)

  1. Wow! Walmart selling a high end Android device. Stellar indeed! I’m sure the phone will still be locked to Telus though.

  3. The device will be locked to Telus but you can get an unlock code for $20 and sometimes even cheaper from certain websites.

  8. Has anyone successfully unlocked a telus HTC device?
If so how did you do it?
I am thinking of buying a desire instead of a no contract iPhone 4 direct from apple.
So far the best plans I can find are with Virgin and Koodo but I want the option to switch at a moments notice when something better comes along.

    • Basically you pop in a SIM card for a different provider and it will ask you for a subsidy code (unlock code). Simply enter your code and it will perma-unlock your device.

  9. What do you guys suggest as the best way to buy this? Getting it unlocked and moving to a different carrier? I have a dumb phone so I know very little about smartphone and data plans. Who is considered the best for this?

Hey Mobilesyrup, you should make a post about the best (or even just different) ways to buy this phone! I think a lot of people would be very interested in that.

  11. Different carriers use different frequencies for 3G/3G+. You have to be careful or you’ll end up running at 2G.

  12. The cost is 360 so they do 88$ profit selling it.

25% of profit is a lot, i’m not aware of the normal profit% but it looks like 10-15% is more acceptable.

  14. Guys i have this phone I bought an unlocked/rooted phone from Australia, first off, this phone is an absolute beast, it’s lightning fast and android 2.1 is a great OS. For any of you that plan on buying it, unlocking it and using it on different carriers, be very weary of the frequencies that are compatible. Telus, Bell and Rogers all use HSDPA and the same frequency. Fido and others don’t use it so be careful. You can unlock it from telus and use it on bell or rogers if you want 3G. If you want edge/2G then fido/koodo and others are ok.

  17. @DY got it from ebay from a company called on the go solutions. It was $750 so this one for $450 is a great deal if you know how to create a gold card and root. The one I have has a stock HTC rom with no branding and it’s rooted with superuser permission. Everything workes perfect except my call waiting beep won’t work. I downloaded a call waiting app for .99 cents and now I have a SMS, MMS and Call waiting beep.

    • The backflip is $400 no contract, always has been.

I was inclined to doubt the $450 Desire pricing when I first heard it as well. But this is now the 3rd or 4th different source that has quoted the same price point. They’re at different outlets too; TELUS, Best Buy and now Wal-Mart. I don’t want to get too excited, but I’m becoming inclined to believe it.

  23. @ Roccos_van & others..

Bell, Telus, Rogers, Vergin, Koodo, Fido (& maybe solo??) Run 850/1900 Mhz HSPA+ / 3G+ Networks

Only Rogers & Fido Support GSM/GPRS & EDGE 2G Network Allso on 850/1900 Mhz

Bell, Telus, solo, vergin & kodoo allso have CDMA (no sim) Network,
telus allso has an iden/cdma network

And Mobilicity, Wind, Videotron & Shaw will have HSPA+ AWS Spectrum running on 1700 Mhz (same as t-mobile in tha us)

So No koodo & Others Do Not support 2G GSM.
And yes Fido runs tha same 3G network bands as tha other major providers…
(you may need to request settings or get a device that supports tha correct bands) telstra devices normally only support one, 850 – But 3G setting would need to be requested from fidos tech support, and weather they will help is a chance at best….

  26. This is a GREAT PRICE for a high end Android device.

I’ve been following the prices of these phones for the past 6 months, and none of the high end Androids have been released at this low a price. If you think about it, this phone is virtually the same as the Nexus One, except the hardware button layout is different, and the Desire has MORE RAM (576 instead of 512). The Nexus One was about $600 after tax and duty. The X10 was released at $549, has a bigger screen, but only 256 RAM – which may put it out of official Android 3.0 contention (xda not included lol), and was released with 1.6 ftl. I’m very very tempted by this price, but am still holding out for a GSM version of the Galaxy S. Either a Rogers specific version, or for the Captivate to get unlocked. Rumours of the Epic 4G on Rogers right now are holding me back from buying this!

But if you were to buy an Android phone RIGHT NOW – Hands down the Desire at this price is a no brainer!!!!

  29. The devices that Telus is getting are outdated with the Samsung screen. This is why the price will be lower. HTC is doing a lot of improvments to the phone and off course TELUS is getting an outdated to give to the Canadian dumb market.

Also Android 2.1 on the Telus phone. Nobody knows for sure if Android 2.2 will work perfectly on these old phones. Bet and you see.

Also it is planned to late October the HTC DESIRE HD a much better phone with 4GBs internal memory, HD Video recording, SRS Sound and so on.

  35. Please, Telus is advertising it as SLCD. If they were to sell it with an AMOLED everyone they sold it to could sue them. It’s not incredibly cheeper tech, and the image quality is hardly impacted. It’s cheeper because it is an older phone, HTC has dropped the price, and other countries had a higher mark up on it because it was new.

  37. t is not old, but it is not the latest, the better, the newest. The screen is not so good and consumes too much power. Telus is probably buying some left over stock. The newest has Sony screen, Android 2.2

  38. Please get your facts straight before making any more comments that are not true. This phone continues to be one of the best selling phones in several countries.Check out the reviews on the web. The price is lower because TELUS has it exclusive in canada so they were able to get a lot of them at better pricing from HTC . It will be advertized alot on the next few months . Stay tuned for the Back to School campaign starting Aug 4.

  39. The reviews are out stading but the fact is that he first load of phones that Telus is bringing does NOT come with the Sony screens! If you run to fast to the store you are taking a phone with the old Samsung screen that according to the REVIEWS is not good on day light and consumes a lot of the battery power.

  40. Five minutes after it first goes on sale, anything is “old”. Kidding. I said “older” not old. Like any device that has been on the market for a while and proved popular enough to continue to make, the company will have likely found efficiencies and made better deals to purchase the materials to make it (for example switching from AMOLED to SLCD). I was only responding to the often questioning of the lower price tag as too good to be true.

I personally believe it is currently the best phone. For the record, this is my next phone as well. And hopefully on Aug 3 as I’ve already scheduled the day off.

  41. Is the Non Contract a unlocked phone? Because there will be late updates to Android 2.2 for locked phones as usual “This update will initially roll out to unlocked HTC Desire handsets. Operator specific versions of the update are undergoing testing and we expect to make them available in several weeks’ time.”

I spoke to tellus through my corparate plan and they gave me some inside information. They said the “world release” for the desire (I’m assuming for the new display) is aug 11th! I was lucky enough to get my preorder in but they advised me that the official release with tellus will be up to a week later.

BUT..be aware that Telus will install stuff into your phone…that even unlocking…will not be as an original unlocked phone….for example you will not to be able to update to Android 2.2. soon…Telus and HTC have to do tests specictly to Telus phones and then…once your phone is not Telus locked anymore….I may have problems updating it.
My two cents…wait another 8 weeks and you will get this phones anywhere for $350.

  60. I had this phone for a month now thru telus. Within the last 5 years i tried at lease 20 different phones…From Iphone, Nokia, Berry…now this.. I can honestly say this is the Best phone Ive ever had. I rooted and upgrade to 2.2 about a couple weeks now and Ive done it myself (xda developers). Now my CPU is overclocked to its max power and runs smooth and super fast. I testet bunch of sites with or without flash sites with a friend that has Iphone 4…he was pissed and could not believe the capability of the HTC. I am running an H network on this coz it says on my task bar…it used to be 3G when it was 2.1, There is so many things you could do if you upgrade. it aint hard to tell! so I suggest you Root and update to 2.2.
