Inventor of the cell phone says “the Android phones are catching up now”

Martin Cooper is the man who’s credited with inventing the world’s first mobile phone made the first call in April of 1973 on a Motorola DynaTAC. In an interview with CNN Cooper said that he knew “someday everybody would have a [cell] phone, but it was hard to imagine that that would happen in my lifetime. And now we’ve got almost five billion phones in the world… Phones have gotten so complicated, so hard to use, that you wonder if this is designed for real people or for engineers.”

In addition, Cooper is rocking several devices. He currently is testing out a $5,000 Vertu, a Motorola Droid and he had an iPhone but gave it to his grandson. He also said that that “the Android phones are catching up now, and the latest version of the Android phones are every bit as good, if not better, than the iPhone.”

What are your thoughts? Android, iPhone, BlackBerry, WinMo, Bada, etc…

  1. He’s pretty much right. We first had propritary OSes, then the manufacturers more or less decided on a uniformed OS they could use for not only one device, but an entire lineup, in the case of the iPhone, its OS moved to the iPod touch, so it IS possible that OSes from mobile phones can and may go into non cellular devices. As with Android, they have more than 65 000 applications in their catalogue now, and they’ve started out not so well. Android 1.5 wasnt the best OS lets say, but with the 2.2 Froyo update and its compatible devices including powerhouses like the HTC Nexus One, its definitely improved on the ends of hardware and software integration along with user friendliness. Bada is relatively new, although I do have high hopes for Bada, the Samsung Wave is actually at a decent price of 299.95 with no contract, making it cheapest, newest smartphone out there, yet its also a powerhouse with I hear flash integration and definitely the 1 Ghz Hummingbird processor from Samsung. The iPhone OS can basically only do one thing from here on in, grow, Apple has basically gone through 4 generations of major OS updates and needless to say, its been somewhat improved, not everyone likes the iPhone OS because its quite limited compared to what Android can do, but its a start and we can only see more development from it. Ahh WebOS. Definitely one of my favorite OSes. The only thing about WebOS is that more consumers would like to see more development on this project, since HP as accquired Palm, Im sure we’ll see more than the 3 WebOS devices we have right now. Windows mobile and Blackberry are the originals. These two have basically been the foundations of mobile OSes as we know it today. Windows Mobile aims high at providing a PC like experience on a mobile device, and to be honest, they do a decent job at it, email from hotmail works well, and their built in WLM application surpasses all, not to mention easy installations of East Asian Language packs, which can now also be done on several different OSes as well, With a mobile Windows 7 OS or similarly themed, theres a lot of hope for microsoft, I know I sure miss my HTC 5800 of mine. Blackberry, the OS thats stood strong for what seems like an eternity. My opinion on the BB OS is kind of like the WebOS and Bada, It’ll continue to undergo development and hopefully we see improvements, Ive already seen improvement with the Webkit Browser on the 9800 BB Slider which looks very well done for a webkit browser in the early stages of prototype testing. And last but certianly not least, the proprietary OSes, these have DEFINITELY had improvement to say the least, as these OSes are increasingly more commonly integrated into devices, for example, TouchWIZ and Bada, Android and HTC Sense. We probably will not lose these propreitary OSes anytime soon, although a few such as TouchWIZ preform really well even on devices with lower specifications. We may see more development into OS crossings, We’ve already seen the iPhone running android, and of course we will see a lot more third party modifications to these OSes through how well they do, and what can be done if their software is exploited more than their manufacturer intended to do. Well thats just what I have to say about these Mobile OSes, We can probably get a good dicussion on this story because its about such a controversial topic for many about which OS is better etc. Personally, Its what OS works for YOU. It doesnt matter if it has Push Email if you dont need it, or it doesnt matter if it has over 100 000 apps if you wouldnt need extensive applications for your daily tasks with your mobile device.

Have some respect for the guy who laid the groundwork for every gadget that’s in your pocket. What exactly have you done in your lifetime?

All that and you forgot to mention one of the original OS’s, “Symbian 60″. What, no thoughts on Symbian 60?

  15. @Nico, By request of Nico, Nokia has been kind of like the second Windows Mobile, some love it, some despise it until the day they die, from what I know from that OS, its also like WinMO because of the method you can add new applications to the device. I dont think Symbian is a terrible OS, I actually think its quite nice, especially in the newer revisions, even there S40s on their lower end models such as the Nokia 2730 looks visually appealing and has great functionality in such devices which arent necessarily the powerhouses of mobile phones. We might see an increase in the Symbian OS onto other devices, Ive seen a few samsungs with the Symbian OS on them, and they seemed quite functional to what an average end user would be statisfied with the overall OS even if they not software or tech savvy. I agree with Jmmm, the Original Rush Hour line “One pinky gets blown off and everybody’s tripping -Rush Hour (1998) James Carter” is basically what happened, :) One long comment and everybody’s tripping, Anyways @Billy Cox, and thats precisely androids aim, to get the most customization as possible. It wont be long before the others follow suit, anyone remember the first touch screen phone? and No it was not the iPhone, after that mainstream LG PRADA, touchscreen phones became more popular, and with the advent of the iPhone, that boosted its popularity to a sky high, Im telling you, all it takes is ONE GOOD idea for EVERYONE to follow, in the case of the touchscreen, Manufacturers had the idea, but they were thinking, it wouldnt sell, nobody would want this etc. but one good idea, the LG PRADA, lead to the surge of touchscreen phones on the market today. Although this also makes us wonder, with all these new OSes and UIs, would one manufacturer step up to the plate to really wow us with a completely new OS? Its possible from my standpoint, even Bada OS could have been that, if they had marketed it correctly. Only time will tell

  19. @Nico, yes your right. I didn’t keep a good track on what I had written. @Siv, MeeGo is in quite the early stages for now. Although I know Nokia has no intention of putting Maemo integrated with MeeGo its definitely possible. The good news on MeeGo is that its open for developers running from a linux kernel. As an OS it looks stable enough, although that’s just assuming your only using their first party applications. Third party applications are always very dependent on the device your using, some can handle apps very well, others crash, so it is a hardware and software integration. MeeGo is developing more like a Windows 7 Mobile or Windows Mobile in general, you have an OS that’s also being used on computers at the same time. From what we can gather, its only natural that you’d see more development towards projects such as MeeGo and Windows Mobile due to their similarity to PC operating systems, the MeeGo for Mobiles and Tablets are slightly different, although they do have somewhat of the same functionality here and there as with any OS tied to another PC OS. As of currently though, its a little more difficult to judge an OS in development because it has not been “fully” released to the public. The only real way you can test the strengths and weaknesses of an operating system is basically seeing how well you work with it on a daily basis. It may not be the most scientifical test although its definitely better than getting raw data numbers, so what if there’s a 1 Ghz processor in the device? What really matters like I’ve stated before is hardware and software integration. The reason why this is so important in mobile operating system development is because the software would need to be well tuned to the hardware specifications which leaves the device well balanced and more likely to be stable when running more intensive applications. Similarly, decent hardware is required ensuring that the end user gets relative statisfaction with their device. And I think that’s enough from me for now, so to recap, MeeGo is something I’m excited for, I can’t wait to see what nokia brings out as a final release, the UI looks pretty nice though, although it’ll require more development than the rest of the OSes because its relatively new to the market. Well that’s it for now, you guys really seem to like my posts :)

  20. He seems to be suffering memory loss… the very first android phone was better than ijunk, and remains better than any subsequent ijunk.

Specs be damned — without a good OS, the phone is worthless.
