How much data do you use in a month?

A new Nielsen report based on 60,000 mobile phone bills in the United States shows that a significant number of Smartphone owners are using less than 1 MB a month of data. Roger Entner of Neilsen said “The top 6% of smartphone users are consuming half of all data. More than a third of smartphone users have not yet signed up for a data plan.”

Even though the report is based in the States  were curious how close the numbers are for us Canadians.  Smartphone adoption is on the rise in Canada and the only recent stat we could find is when Rogers President Rob Bruce recently stated at the 2010 Canadian Telecom Summit that “Our research shows that average daily use on an iPhone is about 210 MB and more than 90% of iPhone customers use less than 500MB of data.”

  1. I use about 150 to 200 meg per month with regular use.

More if I’m travelling as I’ll listen to the radio from home for an hour here and there.

  6. I use 2 to 3 gb a month. I spend all day in truck with only one radio station available. So I stream radio 8 to 10 hours a day. Checking twitter and browsing web on my down time

  7. 1gig at the very least. Sometimes up to 3, depending on how bored I am! I’m jailbroken though, so I actually use more of the data plan I’m paying for!

  10. After checking my usage, from July 2009 to Jan 2010, I would regularly hit 4-5GB a month on my iPhone.

But my new job doesn’t get 3G, so I’m down to about 1.5-2GB a month.

  28. I was used to download 5Gb a month, but for now, as my unlimited plan is gonna change (CDMA to GSM) I plan to use 500Mb. That should be plenty, but as I’m gonna own a new Desire, will browsing be more appealing than my very adequate Diamond?…

  29. I use ~450MB every month just because I’m on 500MB plan. When you think about it, 450MB is not a lot, it’s 15MB/day… If there was an unlimited plan, I would use ~5GB / month because I will start tethering

  31. in May on my iPhone 3GS I used 526.6647 MB

I’m now using a HTC Legend as my main phone since June, and I used

    Total In-plan: 1024.0000 MB
    Total Pay-per-use: 304.3587 MB

So I’ve more than doubled my usage since switching to Android, and I’m going to have a big bill to deal with next month. Not fun. And I received no warning from Bell when I had reached my data limit, so this is all a surprise to me.

  33. I use on average 850MB of my 1GB cap on my iPhone 3GS. I went as high as 3GB one month and paid dearly.

  36. Most folk who post here are high end data users (but at a price)

OTOH: many I have found (especially older people who use a Blackberry) are signed up to email only and Blackberry messenger plans, and have no access to the mobile web. Many others are signed up to social networking and text messaging only plans and also have no access to regular web data.

It’s sad in a way to see that many younger folk (who are the other side of the coin) are prepared to go hungery in order to feed their mobile web browsing habit. Let’s face it, web browsing on a mobile device (even if you throw all your annual salary at it) is not the most fulfilling experience in the world.

As for the major carriers, it’s a shame to see that they are no longer providing any plans at all (at a decent price) to cover the basics of voice, messaging, plus a liberal amount of long distance.

  38. I’m so close to Wi-Fi @ work and home that I only end up using about 80mb per month of my 5GB. If I didn’t have Wi-Fi, I could honestly say that number would easily be about 1-3GB.

  39. Strangely on Fido I was hitting 150 constantly, and surpassed 300MB with tethering. But after switching to Bell, my usage dropped to less than 100MB, and only hit 250 this month with 2 days at a cottage and using mobile hotspot as internet for my netbook.

I was actually expecting my usage to go up after the switch since I moved to a Pre as opposed to the old Nokia E51 which supposedly is more data intensive.

i Browse alot.. Download like 10 to 20 MB (or more) Daily, Stream Radio & Video 3 to 4 hours hours a Day and watch alot of youtube reviews (High Quality via HTC sexy youtube player) As a guess i would over 6 GB But again i have no clue..

tha wife had a 500mb plan for one day and got upto 400 mbs We Swapped that to unlimited right away..

  43. I have unlimited on a Bell HTC Touch so I have podcasts coming to my phone and that causes the monthly average to be 3 GB.

My wife has a new Legend and is not the gadget freak that I am at all and she is on pace for 200MB plus so I would say that these statistics are horribly broken or that people are terrified of using data due to the charges that used to be associated with data use.

  45. I use about 300MB on my Telus Blackberry and on my HTC G1 it varies a lot…. several GB depending on if I tether or not. Also like previously mentioned I use it to make wifi hotspots. Essentially it’s with Wind and don’t need to worry about these silly things ;)
Always shout + Unlimited internet ftw.

I think another important thing is how fast is your connection??? Speeds tethering with my G1 absolutely murder when I use the berry to do it.

  49. I get billed on average about 47 MB although I know for a fact I use at least 400 MB a month, live tv, video streaming, video downloading, push email, GPS, ebuddy, Internet Browsing etc, all over 3G since bells HSPA only supports 3G because of the lack of a GSM fallback support, Maybe Im just using a really old APN setting, I have no idea why they are so inaccurate with the billing of my data usage

  60. I just got a Bell MiFi device and within 4 days I have already consumed 1.2 GB! I work from home and thus primarily use this device during the work day (Microsoft Exchange, Office Communicator, and very little browsing). I have a laptop and iPad connected to it. I very infrequently visit any video streaming sites and have not downloaded any pictures or videos yet. I had the Skout application loaded on my iPad but deleted it (not sure how data intensive this app is). Every day on my iPad, I download my newspaper using PressReader (approx 20 – 60 MB / day). How do I find out why my consumption is so high?
