Mobilicity knocks 5 countries off the Unlimited Asia plan

Mobilicity launched their wireless network in Toronto on May 14th with a few Unlimited plans to choose from. Over the weekend that made some changes to their Unlimited Asia plan. The price is still the same but what used to include unlimited long distance calling to 9 countries (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, South Korea and Japan) now only includes four: China, Singapore, Hong Kong and India.

There is no word on why the plan was changed but those who have already signed up will be able to continue to call the previous countries. Mobility states that his is only available to those who have a $35 plan or higher and better “Hurry, this add-on is only available until July 31, 2010″.

Check it here at Mobilicity

  1. Mobilicity is not going to gain customers by following in the big 3′s footsteps of bait & switch tactics.

  2. If it’s gone from 9 countries to just 5, shouldn’t the price drop?

  3. This post is somewhat misleading.

Mobilicity initially had two Asian Long Distance plans: $20 South Asia which was only India, Pakistan, or Bangladesh. The other $20 plan was East Asia including China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, and South Korea. It wasn’t a combined plan that included all of the aforementioned countries. They were either/or.

As for why they got rid of this, Mobilicity had massive abuse in terms of the unlimited calling to South Asia where people were renting their lines and jamming the operators abroad 24/7. This had to be curbed, which is the reason for the creation of this new Asia LD plan.

That would be true and illegal if they changed peoples plans who got it. But they didn’t. Companies are allowed to change their plans all they want, they just can’t retroactively change already going contracts without voiding them or on some grounds being completely illegal.

  6. This is very a disappointing and sad case for Mobilicity. This is a company I had high hope when it first came out but it fails to deliver the value it promised. It can’t compete with the big 3 as it does not have the dominant position and it can’t compete with WIND as it lacks a value proposition for customers. It is becoming an irrelevant player in the industry.

  8. This is what they did!
Same as their Chinese Brand name.
They asked for a not more than 3 characters name in the name contest. But end up have a 4 characters name.

  9. Unlimited Asia? big deal. No coverage in Niagara where I live. Just like Wind. Totally useless for me….both companies that is. I miss the days of Fido being a prepaid company. Getting a 50 dollar credit at 15 cents a minute.

  13. Unlimited plans are just like buffet. They set prices for these all-you-can-eat items based on what one person can eat on average. But if you bring in some storage hidden inside your clothes and keep filling food in there after you fill your stomach. Thats an abuse! This is what was happening with calls to these high rate destinations. People were renting their phones to friends and also allowing people from around North America to call via mobilicity phones. The usage must have been way more than one person can use.

  14. I agree, if you sell something saying “UNLIMITED” – that means it is unlimited, there is no question of saying “abuse usage”! or don`t use the word “unlimited”. Anyways, it is very disappointing to hear that Mobilicity has knocked out Pakistan from the unlimited calling south asia list, which could have attracted a huge number of customers towards mobilicity.

  15. instead of removing pakistan from the list, they should allow to chose atleast four or five numbers in pakistan where the customer may have to call. in this way no one can cheat.

  16. I used long distance plan just for less then hour each day most of the calls were just attempt to connect and i got a recorded message that you are using too much. I talked to CS and asked about the minutes i used but they had no data just they replied there is a long list of calls see our fair usage policy.
Any one who is using the plan can understand how much you can use with busy network messages and check your number messages :)
I am paying 50$ a month just for
using Asia plan and keeping a plan on a hope that down the road they will improve their service.

  18. I cancelled my Mobilicity plan yesterday. I had the Unlimited South Asia plan, including Pakistan. A week ago, I spoke to a Mobilicity representative who said already existing customers would still be able to continue on with the plan, but that new customers would not have Pakistan included, just India and Bangladesh.

A representative Mobilicity called me yesterday and said the plan would no longer include Pakistan after July 22nd, 2010. After that time the calls to Pakistan would be 9 cents per minute.
I was paying just over $100/mth for their service plus purchase of the phone. I cancelled immediately.
Soon afterward, my Mobilicity phone met with a timely death under my car tires.
Mobilicty was supposed to be a breath of fresh air in the mobile market, but it has suddenly turned stagnant.

  20. Why is Pakistan censored? Is it because it has “Paki” in it?

When firms say a service is unlimited, they usually mean it because they know what the average consumption is. I’m prone to believing that a bunch of people making calls to the cancelled countries were abusing it, or there weren’t enough subscribers to make whatever contract they had with the international companies worth keeping (like not enough Japanese people in the city making calls to Japan).

It’s stupid on their part, yes. But that’s how business goes. You cut off whatever isn’t profitable or will generate profit in the future, and you continue on with the things that will help you survive in this cut-throat competitive atmosphere.
