Google Maps Navigation arrives in Canada

Google has officially released Google Maps Navigation version 4.2 to us Canadians. This will give you turn-by-turn navigation and also Google’s Street View capability on your Android device. Google Maps can be downloaded from the Android Market and operates on Android OS 1.6 and higher.

This is great news. I’ve never wanted to buy a gps because it only has one function and having been with Telus, I never wanted to pay for TelusNav. Great stuff.

  • Braden N

    YES!

  • Tom

    This is great.

Not long ago it appeared that voice navigation would remain an extra cost option on phones.

    Thanks Google. again.

  • Chris

Great…yet another slap in the face for Telus HTC Hero users. Needs 1.6 or higher to work. Thanks HTC for dragging your feet on updating our Hero devices.

I can’t wait until July for the iPhone 4.

    [sigh]

By the way, that’s why Rogers sucks and everyone should just root their phones.

I put some instructions up on my blog Beaverdroid on some phones. Hope they are semi-accurate.

  • Jim R

Another Telus HTC Hero owner here who is less than pleased (and that’s putting it very nicely) about the Hero being stuck on 1.5.

Telus and HTC, please get your act together on this.

  • Mathieu

Telus HTC Hero will be updated to 2.1 in 2010, that’s all we can say now. If you don’t want to wait, hack your phone.
That’s really too bad that so much Android phones are still sold in Canada with 1.5.

The Canadian Nexus One + Froyo (Android 2.2) + Flash 10.1 + Google Maps Navigation + Google Voice search (+ root to remove ads …) is a really good deal and it’s available right now in Canada for not that much of money.

  • Phoenix

Sounds great…now if only Rogers would get the promised 2.1 for my Magic lol.

  • Aret

I have waited ages for this to arrive I’m canada. I used it today in downtown Toronto and it is incredible. Android keeps getting better everyday.

  • Arshad

I just gave it a trial run without actually using it and the capabilities are absolutely phenomenal. It runs a lot better than Brut Google Maps 4.2 and seems to be a lot more stable. Running it on my HTC Hero. I hope one day Google adds live traffic updates with the option to easily reroute.

Gunna check this now on my htc diamond with 2.1

LOL @ People that Wait, Expect & Want bloated Carrier Updates .

    Have Fun .

    @Jim R and @Chris

You are aware that the HTC Hero has had an update available for some time, right? It’s more the fault of you and Telus.

You, for not manually updating your phone with the new firmware.

Telus, for taking their damn time to release the update.
