TELUS has finally come out with their iPad 3G data plans – a different angle than both Rogers and Bell ($15 for 250MB and $35 for 5GB). They stated in a release today that users can get the iPad data at no-contract for “$20 for 500MB per month – additional data is charged at 5¢ per MB up to a maximum of $30 for a total of $50 per month.”
So far this is the closest plan we’ve seen to “unlimited”. Thoughts?

i think that wifi is the way to go if you have to have an iPad.
Bring on the Android pads!

Not really. Because for 1100MB you already have paid $50. At the price they can give you the rest. (30$ / 0.05 = 600 MB)
There might be some case where Telus is cheaper than the others, depending on where your breaking point is for the RoBell plans, but on overall it is not a good deal at all.

I am not great at math!!!! But isn’t that only 600 mb of data for 30 bucks??????
Bringing your total to just over a gig for 50 bucks???? Maybe I missed something?

Hmmm, for $5 more, you get double the data with Telus compared to Rogers and Bell. And possibly unlimited for $50. Good I guess if you go over.a few gigs over the 5GB that you would be paying $35 with Rogers for. The plans could still use some improvement…

At 5 cents per MB, thiS plan would work out to be $50 for 1.1 GB. How is that closer to unlimited than $35 for 5GB?

@Dohn Kendall
Because at that point you can continue to use data and the price will not increase, thus, you get 1.1 GB for $50, or 5 GB for $50, or 10 GB for $50, get it. The more you use past 1.1 GB, the better deal it is, but this would only be good for people who use a lot of data.
Then again, a lot of people probably use between 250 MB and 500 MB, and 500 MB on Telus is much cheaper than from Rogers or Bell.

y is everyone so re***ded here? u guys wanna pay $50 for 1.1gb or $35 for 5gb? @jim $50 for unlimited? do the math before buying anything u fool ur the target market for the big 3 confused with big words… this plan is only good for ppl using less than 500mb per month which is usually a large percent of the mobile market but ipad may take up more data and faster to do some of the same things u know.

You people obviously don’t understand. As Daniel stated above, the maximum overage is capped at $30, so you can technically use 10GB and still only pay the $20 + $30 = $50. This deal is definately better!

The Telus plan won’t be right for everybody, but it does have some sweetspots based on you what usage you expect.
0-250MB: Rogers or Bell will be cheaper at $15
251 – 800MB: Telus will be cheaper at $20 – $35
801MB – 5000MB: Rogers or Bell will be cheaper at $35
5000MB or more: Telus will be cheaper at $50
Plus there are some other considerations:
-The Telus/Bell HSPA network is substantially larger than Rogers for users in most parts of the country
-The Telus plan includes some additional goodies that aren’t widely known yet
-The Rogers plan includes access to their wifi hotspots
Overall, we have done pretty well so far in that we have 3 providers offering a few different pricing options.

Telus has a mistake in their system, right now you can get 5GB for $20.

But is it really unlimited data or do they shut down your data when you hit the $50 limit? Rumor is that they don’t shut you down but you are subject to their “Fair Use Policy” which will stop you at 10GB. Not unlimited but 10GB for $50 is the best deal in Canada.

@TNSF,
have to agree TELUS is the best deal right now; especially with more bandwith rich applications coming online;
PS: what r the additional goodies u speak of pls…?

@criminalogic, there are no contracts involved here, and as TNSF pointed out, the TELUS plan could be quite good for some people dependant upon their usage.
@TNSF, Bell also gives free access to their wi-fi hotspots, which are far more plentiful than Rogers. That, and their larger network, would lead me to go with Bell if I was choosing between one of those two. As for the TELUS extras, I’ve not seen that even hinted at anywhere, including the TELUS press release. I too am very keen to hear what info you have on those, and how you got it!

-The Telus/Bell HSPA network is substantially larger than Rogers for users in most parts of the country
That’s actually incorrect. If you want to compare coverage between Rogers and Belus, you have to take into account that Rogers also has GSM/EDGE coverage, where you still get service.
For example MB and SK, where Belus is absent in HSPA/3G, while Rogers has coverage. In lot of places BC Rogers has coverage in GSM/EDGE where Belus only has CDMA (not compatible).
Not to defend Rogers in any way.

So, the TELUS plan has officially been added to their web site, and there are no “additional goodies” mentioned.
In fact, no included wi-fi like Bell/Rogers and I confirmed there is no “free overage” for the first month as had been mentioned on some forums.
Unless you are in the very limited sweet spot of around 500-700MB/month, you will be better to go wtih Bell/Rogers. If you are as close to the break-even threshold as 750-800MB, you may as well go with Bell/Rogers and get the full 5GB for the same $35, “just in case”.
Are we missing something??
P.S. @Hub, the GSM/Edge coverage is not HSPA (ie not nearly as fast) so the statement is correct. Likewise, not trying to defend Bell/TELUS either!

@Randy: GSM Edge isn’t 3G, but it does work on Rogers when there is no 3G, unlike on Belus.
Most people won’t even notice the difference.

@Hub, true, but you said the statement was “actually incorrect” and it isn’t. The statement as quoted is correct.
Bell/TELUS’ HSPA coverage is considerably larger than Rogers. True they don’t have the GSM to fall back on, but for the vast majority of Canada they don’t need it as their HSPA network is significantly larger in comparison to Rogers. It’s only the fact that Rogers’ HSPA coverage pales in comparison that falling back on Edge can be construed as a benefit.
Each network has their deficiencies, I’m sure people east of Montreal would love to have even Edge coverage from Rogers, but sadly, Rogers doesn’t even have that for many areas while Bell/TELUS have blanketed HSPA+ coverage.

@Randy but considering the original comment said “most”, that could be considered true because in Alberta, Telus has at least 8x the 3G coverage, which ends up being larger than Rogers basic GSM coverage. Then into Ontario thru to the maritimes, the 3G coverage is huge, including many parts in the maritimes. However, there are places like Northern Ontario where the coverage is lacking.

@Thomas, I think you’re just agreeing with me.
Yes, TELUS’ coverage is ubiquitous in the Maritimes and Newfoundland. That’s why Rogers is not an option for me. I go to the East Coast a few times a year and a Rogers phone is useless there, GSM, 2G, 3G, doesn’t matter.

Sounds ok if you use 500-700mg but it will also really depend on the cost of the Telus Unit itself. Sounds like a lot of “ipads” will be coming out shortly – I’m waiting for the best buy for the buck!

Anybody else notice “Additional data (in Canada)* will be charged at 5¢/MB, up to a maximum of $30 of overage per month.
Maximum allowed data usage per month will be 5GB”
So max of 5GB for $50? Lame!

looks like Nexzen is the only one who can ‘RESEARCH’ Capped at 5GB

Although how you would possibly reach 5GB when you are charged per MB and a max at $50. Weird.

I think the Canadian data plans along with the rest of the world SUCK. Here’s why, I have 3 TV’s in my house, I do not need a separate plan for each one. NO. But for mobile data devices I do? Why can’t I just add my iPad to my iPhones data plan. I pay for 6GB on Rogers for my iPhone and I barely use 500MB so why can’t I add the iPad to that plan? Together I would still use less that a GB. I will not get a 3G Pad until I will not get raped for using it.

A lot of people dont realize this but there is a crisis in the US because of unlimited data plans. AT&T will no longer provide new customers with unlimited data because there is so much data being used, particularly by apple products, that its actually causing “traffic jams” in their systems. So people complain that they are experiencing down times, but unlimited comes at its own expense. Luckily Canada hasn’t run into the same situation because no service providers in Canada offer unlimited mobile data plans, so its way more regulated. So overall, I’d rather pay $35/mth for 5GB and have reliable service then to pay $50 and have unlimited (mind you I wouldn’t use more than 2GB/mth anyway).
By the way the IPAD 3G isn’t worth the 649.99 entry price. you’re way better off going with a netbook with built in 3G. Way more versatile and easier to fix. You’d better get that extended warranty if you plan on getting the IPAD or be willing to fork over another 650+ if something were to go wrong, and with its earlier release in the states and the number of issues that have happened i wouldn’t be surprised if you ran into any problems.
