With Mobilicity announcing they’ll be officially open for business in Toronto on Saturday in several locations, offering a variety of unlimited plans and 6 devices to choose from… WIND Mobile has written a post on their company blog that urges Canadians to have the “buyer beware” mentality of the new competition.
Chairman of WIND Tony Lacavera stated that “The next few weeks and months will see the launch of several new mobile carriers in the Canadian marketplace. This will continue to broaden the competitive landscape; however, I know that WIND will continue to be the right network for Canadian consumers… With new competition emerging, the principle of ‘buyer beware’ is going to become very important. When customers evaluate the competition, they need to understand what they’re getting and what they’re not. That means asking the right questions: Does this new player offer data, roaming?”
WIND launched their service back in December of last year and operate in Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton, Ottawa and soon in Vancouver. Even though Lacavera does not directly state they are talking about Mobilicity, he does go into detail about how “WIND’s network extends across the country… and in those zones, we cover much more than the urban core.”
Mobilicity’s Unlimited wireless service is currently only offered in the Greater Toronto Area with plans to launch in Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary and Ottawa later this year.

Unfortunately, I ultimately see the new small carriers competing amongst themselves, instead of Bell, Rogers, or Telus competing with the new carriers.

I love the Mobilicity price plans. For someone that lives and works in Toronto, these plans are truly fantastic and simple. However, I can’t say I am prepared to abandon my decade long relationship with one of the major incumbents. After Wind Mobile’s sloppy launch, ill use a wait and see approach before I make the switch. I applaud these new entrants for setting new standards, but I am doubtful that it will promtpt the incumbents to drastically alter their pricing plans – that is to say, not until a year out when the new entrants have overcome their growing pains. Till then, ill be keeping an eye on you Wind and Mobilicity. Sorry Public, as a data user, I am not within your target…

To be a national player you have to have national service and not just pot shot markets and call it National.
All the new companies are city centered and are far from national. National? They aren’t even provincial.
There are still only 3 players in the celluar game and it will stay 3 big players until one of the new companies offer complete coverage – from Windsor to Bainsville, from Thunder Bay to Tacoma and more.
Robelus is watching but far from shaking.

+1 – and why the big 3 incumbents are not all that worried and why the newcomers will do well if, combined, they pick up 10% of the market. I know the cities comprise a lot of the country, but many city folk still want to be able to move around the country without counting the minutes they are using their phone. Wind and Mobilicity boast low voice roaming fees (compared to the LD fees on the incumbents with no roaming fees) but they don’t talk about their exorbitant data roaming fees or mention there are no extra fees for data no matter where you are in Canada with Rogers, Bell or Telus.
I have to agree with Tony (maybe for the first time) it’s buyer beware; know your needs and shop carefully.

Doesn’t sound like Wind, Mobilicity, or PM will affect the big 3 much in stealing business in the future. Everything you read from Wind and so on is just propaganda. Only true facts of dollars & cents tell the story!

Sometimes I question these review people who do those reviews. Just remember who they work for they will always post something in thier favour sometimes. Claiming that they increased in subscribers. But, all the Rogers, Telus, and Bell Store I walked to seems pretty dead to me.

WIND should spend less time talking and more time in figuering out how to offer moew devices.. i mean T-Mobile in the US is using the same frequency as these guys and they have plenty of cool smart phones.. what the im check is htc maple?.. they need to launch atleast 2 android phones before the iphone 4g comes to rogers.. if wind dont have a nice touchscreen android phone by then.. im porting my # back to rogers and signing the 3 year sentence.. im tired of them saying “coming soon sir”..

Cut the rhetoric. You can’t beat Bell and Rogers for what really counts–coverage area & reception. Includes subs such as Fido-best and simple plans, phone choice and excellent (fast ) service. Haven’t had dropped call for years. The only competition these new guys are creating is amongst selves. And what about the environment with all the new towers?
