  1. Nice deal. Too bad it’s on a three-year contract. I’ll keep looking at WIND or wait until Mobilicity launches.

  2. uhh, I don’t get what they mean by unlimited social networking? Does that mean when you access Twitter or Facebook on your phone, they won’t count that as data usage? Or does that only apply if you use it through their social view app?

  3. John, have you got your hands on it yet? I’d love to know how it actually works, if it’s anything like the Rogers Music Store, i’ll pass.

  5. JP, the use of social networks won’t be counted towards your 500MB is the point.

    Also wanted to clear something up, because the article didn’t really explain this. It isn’t a Rogers built app, it’s just the built in Social Network apps (Timescape on Sony, MotoBlur on Quench and SenseUI on HTC and i forget it’s name on LG). Rogers has just branded it as Social View to make it easy for dumb consumers. I just spoke to my contact at Rogers, and she confirmed this;

“To clarify, Social View is not a Rogers app. It’s a category of smartphones including the X10, HTC Magic+, LG Eve, and soon to be released Moto Quench. Social View collects each one of your friends’ social network updates like pictures, text messages, Facebook and Twitter updates and puts them all in one place. It means you can use your phone’s contact list to call or text as always, but also send a Facebook or Twitter message, or comment on a friend’s status.”

  6. What does “Unlimited Social Networking” means? If it means why I think it means then we really need the CRTC to mandate net neutrality…

    • Yeah, this is what you think it means. It means Net Neutrality is going out the window. Who’s going to access sites not in the unlimited list if they have to pay more money for them? Zero people.

The CRTC is useless, it hurts us more than helps. They aren’t an elected body, they’re just fun little facade to make it seem like Canadian consumers are protected by the companies owning the monopolies. Actually, what’s a facade that is also a puppet? They’re more like that.

Why would they ever have our interests in mind?

  7. Add 15 bucks just for Caller ID and Voicemail, add 8 bucks for Rogers tax, plus actual tax and you may as well get an Iphone.

This is Rogers’ attempt to corral the Internet. Yee-haw. Funny thing is they roll it out on Android, yet most Android handsets already have a social media integration feature. Anyway, I don’t know about you, or anyone sensible, but I sure don’t want to rely on Rogers and their definition of the Internet.

  9. Rogers is trying, albeit begrudgingly. It’s almost as though they sit in meetings and say “ok guys, we need to offer something without really offering anything at all… come up with some ideas”. And viola, garbage like the Social View plans are created.

I guess they’ll fool the noobs, that’s the best they can hope for.

  10. What is so great about these new plans? Does not make sense. There is no way Robbers will offer a plan for everyone.

  11. What does the call management opt-in feature mean? On the left it says NO CHARGE, so why wouldn’t I opt-in? If this plan includes the call management stuff, especially caller id and voice mail then it’s a great step forward for Rogers. If not, then they still suck and will continue to prove how easily people are dooped by advertising.

  12. From what you guys are saying… anything done on the phone that relates to social networking does not count towards the 500MB of data? How do they even determine that or track that?

  14. This plan wouldn’t be so bad except for that “government regulatory fee” which is explicitly stated on their disclaimer that it is actually not government-related…wtf is that?

  15. Yeah they call it the government regulatory fee because it sounds like it’s a valid fee that one has to pay, but legally (since they are saying it’s a government fee when it’s not) they have to not that the money collected from this fee does not actually go to the government and is in fact not an actual government fee.

This is why I find Telus/Bell/Rogers print ads so hilarious, they have about an inch and a half of legal speak while if you look at wind (and hopefully the other new guys) there’s next to no legal speak at the bottom.
Goes to show who’s being more honest.

  16. If Rogers touts everything to do with this plan is “right in the contacts list” then shouldn’t Caller ID be included in the plan? If it’s not, then some of the features they are bragging about being part of this social network plan won’t work. Seems like false advertising.

  17. In Saskatchewan and Manitoba, unlimited evenings and weekends used to start at 6pm, but with this new unlimited social plan it has changed to 9pm. It’s typical that whenever a new plan comes out, there are negative changes that are hidden in the details. Weren’t most “analysts” saying that the Canadian wireless industry was going to become more competitive over the course of this?

In addition, it blows my mind that in this day and age that Call Display and voicemail are still additional charges, not to mention the 3 year contracts.

  19. The regulatory fee is the actual network access fee that use to be $6.95 plus tax and some other pennies added in for something i forget.
It is a legitimate charge that ev1 pays its actually lower then it use to be at $6.95
The crtc had something to do with the drop in price.
Cell phone charges in Canada are just plain out of control.
One of the most expensive places in the free world to own a cell phone
