Pics from WIND’s “Contract Killing Contract Carnival”

We’re here at the WIND “Contract Carnival” and things are just getting started. We’re pretty sure that the highlight is not the face painting or the free popcorn but more the highly anticipated “Contract Killing” that will occur. We’ll be putting up video shortly but in the meantime WIND is making the most of the opportunity and have revealed a study (commissioned by TNS of 714 people) that revealed 49% of Canadians have a wireless contract with 1-year or more remaining.

Check out these pics of the first “Contract Carnival”

  2. What really worries me about all these new companies, is that looking long term, I don’t really believe that any of them are planning on expanding their services to ‘out in the sticks’ – they will I believe cherry pick the major cities and erect services where they are the most profitable.

I have coverage currently from both Telus and Rogers; it is however a weak signal area (where I live) for both companies…….

When it gets to the point, that Rogers and Telus are struggling (because of increased competition) will they still support these more remote regions I wonder?

I am thinking that perhaps we may no longer have any service at all (where I live) – it will be small consolation to me if I no longer have to pay out on a three year contract.

  3. I never sign more than a one year contract. I feel they are one of the key elements which make Canadian cell companies so bad.

  5. @B These pics were posted just a couple of minutes after 10:00am, that is the time they were to start and run ’till 2:00pm. I don’t think it is meant to be like a performance or something that a crowd shows up to at a particular time, just something for people to browse through as they pass the square while getting their message out.

Whether people are supportive of Wind or not, I really like the direction they and the other new carriers are taking in no contracts. Even 1 or 2 year contracts, like everywhere else in the world would be acceptable for fair enough compensation. But there’s no compensation for locking into a 3 year contract in an industry that evolves so quickly.

  6. Wow Wind is edgy. I don’t think they’re going to have to spend another penny on advertising all year.

  7. As much as Canadians hate contracts, I think they’re beginning to realize how much more they hate paying full price for a smartphone on an iffy network.

And Wind will eventually recognize that their target audience are people looking for a dumbphone (max $100) with an unlimited calling/texting plan including CID/VM. Most smartphone users (or those wanting one) will head over to the Big 3 to get $500 off from a large selection of handsets.

  9. Pretty good concept regardless of money spent on the event / turn out.

They’ll get press coverage, which is the main component.

  10. I dropped by on my lunch hour around 1:00pm and it was very busy there. They were handing out cards outlining their plans and the $150 porting credit. I think it’ll probably be a good exercise in increasing brand awareness. Oh, also put my name in the draw for a free BlackBerry Bold 9700, though I never win anything. :)

…and @Joe, I agree to an extent, but there’s no reason we can’t, like the rest of the entire world, get a decent handset subsidy for a 2 year contract.

Why is Canada the only country that requires a 3 year contract to get more than $100 off a handset?

  15. I agree with you totally Joe. No one wants contracts and no one wants to pay full price. I think its best to sign one contract and then purchase any other phone you’d like via a third party until you’re eligible to upgrade. They’re willing to pay for most of your phone so you might as well take it when it’s available. The reason we still have 3 year contracts is because we aren’t a mature enough cell phone market. I’d like 2 years too, but Canadian cell phones took a while to get out of it’s infancy stage.

People will always argue the contrary. Remember, the big 3 are fascists who want nothing than to consume the young of society.

  17. in regards to the big three giving 500 bucks off a handset; if wind is telling the truth about selling the handset at cost then the big three are not giving 500 bucks off. So why the three year contract and the reluctance to upgrade a smartphone before the three years is up? 450 – 150 (what I pay). That means they’re only comping someone 300 bucks and in three years they’ll make that investment how many times over.

  18. 500 for an iphone, not all phones. Profit from the service and making back the cost of the handset are NOT the same thing. If you get 300 off a phone, that is NOT made back after 6 months of $50 bill payments. Wind is only giving a $100 difference off the cost of a 9700 anyways.

  20. If you think wind is selling the phones at cost then I have some swamp land I can sell you cheap. Wind needs to step up and make a go of this.. this we are new story is not working. besides it is not Wind it is Orascom. We should get that point straight.

  21. Man, you guys are a bunch of whiners. Let WIND do what it wants to do. They are going to find out soon enough if their approach is going to work out or not. Until then, you should be happy they’re here and trying to enter a market that’s been deprived of competition for a long time.
