WIND’s “Contract Carnival” is where “contract-killing” occurs

WIND Mobile is hosting Canada’s first ever “Contract Carnival” this Friday at Yonge and Dundas Square in Toronto (runs 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.). During these festivities there will be paper airplane-making, piñatas, a caricature artist and a magician. In addition, WIND has put together some sort of experience where creative “contract-killing” happens. This is apparently “to showcase what Canadian consumers really want to do with unfair mobile contracts”.

Sounds fun… hope the Nokia N900 or the Nexus One will be there!

  1. sorry but i dont see the difference between
a)choosing to pay 500$ or so for a BB 9700 and have no contract with Bell/Rogers/Telus (yes you can also pay 150$ 3yr contract)
    OR
b)choosing to pay 500$ or so for a BB 9700 and have no contract with WIND

  3. Wind sure is cultivating a very negative brand association. Contract killing, gouging, etc are all very negative terms. Wind needs to be careful that they don’t end up as the bitter brand. They need to be more positive. And deliver on their promises.

  6. You can’t get the BB9700 from any of the big 3 for less then $600. From Wind you get it for $450, plus a service contract for $80 which gives you unlimited everything. I see that as a big advantage and price savings.

  7. Hey pascal, I’d like to see you get any kind of decent plan from Robelus at anytime without signing a contract. If you want ANY decent plan, you MUST sign a contract, whether you buy the phone outright or not. WIND = freedom of choice, you can come and go as YOU see fit. And prepaid does NOT = a decent plan!

  9. I have two Wind phones. They work better than my Robbers, so far. If you do not see the difference between unlimited incoming/outgoing calls with full voice mail/ID and no contract compared to robbers/billus/tellus/3 year of customer no service: pack of lies…and their conveluted “plans” to rip you off then perhaps you should stay where you are pascal…we will not say you are dumb as dirt, no one would say that about pascal

  10. People aren’t understanding the way that robelus uses contracts.

First off, their “buy outright” prices are FAR FAR higher than the phone’s reasonable prices, therefore you are not buying the phone outright, you are buying yourself out of the contract.

Second, they use the substantially inflated prices to force people into these ridiculous contracts.

Third, they advertise only their “with contract” prices, i.e. “$15 for a super-duper-smartphone” — “with 500 year contract” in fine print… You need to look HARD to find the non-contract prices.

For example, robbers wants $550 for the RIM9700, wind only charges $450. Doesn’t robbers get a better volume discount? So why do they charge MORE? They should be charging LESS!!!

Why do they charge $600 for HTC DREAM or HTC MAGIC? You can buy them direct from GOOGLE for $329 and $399 respectively! And when you buy them direct from GOOGLE, they come UNLOCKED — both SIM as well as FIRMWARE (means that you can install custom firmware on them rather than being stuck with robbers’ crippled and obsolete version). For that matter, you can get a GOOGLE NEXUS ONE for $530 DIRECT FROM GOOGLE!!!

  12. Actually Keep It Real, you CAN’T I tried to sign up with Bell on no contract for an iPhone plan and they told me that in order to get the iPhone plan I needed to sign a 3 year contract… JUST FOR THE PLAN! Are they on crack? I would LOVE to burn their headquarters to the ground! What a retarded company! They claim that they are investing a lot of money into customer service… BULL! Their customer service is the WORST it’s ever been! I HATE their company… They promised me something, it was even in the notes and it never happened I called back spoke with a manager and he told me that the only way I will get that is if I were to sign a 3 year agreement! HA! Like I will EVER do that!

  14. Sounds dumb. Why is it the an under performing company wants to hold a fair. Fix your useless network and hire some real reps instead of the hijab wearing terrorist women who couldn’t get a job anywhere else. This just adds insult to injury, people are complaining about how crap this service is and you wanna hold a promotion during this time.

  15. I can cancel my existing contract, pay the ECF (for 24mo), buy the BB9700 and sign on with Wind with unlimited data for cheaper than it would cost me to continue with my current provider. Nuff said.

  17. dont get me wrong WIND is having the most fantastic plans on the market right now (except for Data) it<s just that they would more competitive offering the possibility to lower the price of a smartphone, so that people who dont have 500$ in their pocket and want a smartphone but can afford the 40$ per month can get it… And dereck forget buying the iphone w/o a commitment Apple is signing strict contract with carriers so that you get the same range of plan and/or contract and /or tech support for the iphone everywhere (sound like some red and yellow fast food chain isnt it?) And by the way awareness is to know every details of the commitment of service you are agreeing in with (even WIND has one) every should read that before they buy

  19. How is this supposed to help them bring in clients? The only people who have time to go to an event like this are unemployed or students… there is no way I would ever head down and burn a contract for a cell phone provider

  20. John,
Waht you said was so inappropriate. They way you classify people and exclude them from contributing effectively in the societ, due to their religious belief, sounds racist and definitely not health for the Canadian societ. Hence, comments like yours, should be removed by the Forum Addministration.

  21. Anyone that is complaining about winds service is a troll. I had wind for 2 months now and its perfectly fine. I never get dropped calls(only when I go to my basement) & Have used over 80gb bandwidth :) . I get 1-2 bar with rogers almost everywhere. Just rarely when I am outside I get 3-5 bars. Tried with an iphone, lgvu, and htc magic. Doesnt work. I get 4-5 bars everywhere with wind no dropped calls + I dont have to pay 1.85$/min when Im in the usa. I get it for 25cents a minute. Whats that a bargain. Saved me over 500$ in roaming fees.
