Fido launching new Prepaid plans March 28th?

The Canadian wireless market is getting more competitive and it’s all good for us customers. I believe we’ll eventually see cheaper handset prices and we’re now seeing rate plans dropping.

Fido recently introduced their new City Fido plans and also a slew of new handsets. For those interested in Prepaid option, Fido looks to be set to release a couple new Prepaid plans on March 28th. We were informed from HowardForums that both of the plans plans below will include: Call display, Voicemail, Call waiting, Call forward and billing by the minute.

- Overage per message: $0.15 per message (Canada-wide)

$29:
- 100 daytime minutes (local)
- 1000 evening and weekend minutes (local)
- 100 outgoing text messages (Canada-wide)
- Unlimited incoming text message

  1. The only good thing I see about that is that it now includes voicemail and call display. I hate having to pay extra for that.

  3. Hmmm it’s tough to say whether these are better or worse.

It seems to me Rogers is being sneaky yet again and making prepaid customers pay the equivalent of a monthly plan plus call display and voicemail. Look at that $29 plan, it’s like the $20 Fido monthly plan with the $10 voicemail and call display add-on.

So no, I don’t believe this is a good sign of increase in competition or lower rates, I think it is Rogers wising up to many people going prepaid to keep free call display and voicemail (that’s what I did for a long time) and making them pay for it.

  4. I’d rather go with a WIND plan and deal with the spotty coverage (which over time will definitely improve). And until that coverage gets improved I’ll be dealing with MUCH better customer service

  5. Fido prepaid has always included call display and voicemail. Prepaid is for people with bad credit and who are under 18. They aren’t that bad, but who wants prepaid anyways.

  7. @Kevin
Prepaid is for those who use VoIP at home and don’t call often from their mobile, i.e. those who don’t let themselves be ripped off by ridiculously expensive and ridiculously long-term contracts.

  10. Are these actually prepaid or are they new monthly options?

If they are monthly then this might be good news, as it means you can get caller id etc included in a voice plan under $20. A data plan is $25 at least so you could have a fairly decent basic smartphone plan for $44 a month.

If these are just prepaid though, then it isn’t any better. You can’t combine a prepaid plan with a data plan (I tried), and caller id and voicemail were included before anyway.

  11. Id go for the $29 option if it inccluded 300 day time minutes and unlimited incoming calls and 2500 text messages.. until fido comes up with a plan similar to that or actually matches WIND.. ive ported all 3 of my #s from Rogers to wind and i intend to stay with WIND.. ive been ripped off for over 12 years not its time to get something back.. i want Fido/Rogers to price match WIND and do a city plan where ud have to be in a Rogers/Fido local zone or ull be charged roaming.. i can live with that.. i already do live with that with WIND.. and also no 3 year contracts.. im willing to sign 18 months contract the most.. new contracts should be 6 months 12 months or 18 months (which should scoew you a free phone)… WIND Rocks!!!
