WIND sort of launches service in Ottawa

Shortly after going live with the Edmonton launch, Wind Mobile has partly kicked open the doors in our nations capital Ottawa. They announced on their site that they are doing “some final tweaks on the network” and this allowed for a “Technical launch”.

Good news for current subscribers as this extends your Home Zone reach and can make calls between Wind to Wind customers. In regards to the where in Ottawa the service reaches, Wind states the “Ottawa network extends from Orleans in the east to Kanata in the west. It also crosses the river to the Gatineau Hills and all the way to Buckingham”. However those looking to get your hands on an actual device will have to wait a bit longer as they’re not actually selling devices yet. CEO Ken Campbell states on the company blog that “the next few sites will really bolster the offering and allow us to be in stores with a more extensive and reliable network very soon.”

So Wind is now in Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton, Ottawa and next up is Vancouver. We hear new devices will be launched within a couple months – entry level and smartphones. In addition to this news, Wind announced their first offer with a $150 credit to all customers who port over to their service.

How is everyone liking Wind so far?

  1. Vancouver AFTER the Olympics. I wonder how much Bell paid to prevent them to be here during the Olympics.

  2. Definitely excited about the Vancouver launch.

There’s a lot of speculation on the delay. Some say Bell, while others say it was too expensive to setup towers DURING the games — alternatively, some locations were simply closed to construction.

I did hear they turned on a few Wind towers around Whistler though. A lot of people were saying the service was awesome and flawless.

Which leads that Wind wants a flawless launch in Vancouver.

  3. I doubt that was Bell’s doing… I doubt any new cell company would like to launch during the Olympics in the host city! Look at the issues they had with their network in the GTA at launch! If it worked with no hiccups it would have been genius, but would have been willing to take the risk and have it fail on such a large stage?

  4. Actually, man. (hub) they launched their network out there on the hills so that people could use it when they travelled there… They haven’t launched it in the city yet though…

  5. Apparently wind was operational at Whistler DURING the Olympics

Anyway, I wonder what there plans are next? Perhaps just expand current Home Zones. Other cities maybe?

  6. I think it was smart not to do Vancouver during the Olympics too many variables to consider.
You don’t benefit from international Roamers. Maybe T-Mobile we still don’t know.

    2) High cost of Marketing.

  7. Wind needs an exclusive flagship phone if they want to attract high end smartphone users. Their $15 plan is good for low end users but those people won’t likely spend $150 for a samsung gravity; they’re more likely to get something similar for less on prepaid or contract/koodo tab.

  9. Did anybody notice the Bell comercial during the olympics when a blue rock knocked out all the red rocks? I found it kinda ironic.

  10. There was a network lockdown on vancouver nobody was allowed to make any changes/modifications/new service additions/etc any changes basicly to any communications or internet infrastructure for most of the month. nobody paid/managed to halt anyone else nobody could do any upgrades or changes. if wind had launched before it they would be stuck with any quirks until the olympics had ended.

  12. Enough with the conspiracy theories already. Wind’s launch timing in Vancouver is entirely up to Wind. Realistically though it didn’t make any sense to launch prior to or during the Olympics. Costs for advertising, real estate, etc were all high prior to and during the Olympics. Why bother with the high costs when there isn’t any direct benefit to WInd?

Its not a big conspiracy, its just they way things worked out.
