Bell Mobile TV on Apple iPhone goes live

Bell is back with another mobile app, this time specifically for iPhone users. Starting today Bell is first carrier in the world to offer live TV access to the 2010 Winter games available on the Apple iPhone. Some of the other channels users will be able to access are live NHL, CBC/RBC, The Weather Network, Treehouse, MuchMusic, YTV.

This is a free app that’s available in both English and French and requires iPhone OS 3.0 or later. To use the app the only downside is that you’ll have to turn off your WiFi and succumb to data charges (in addition to $8 monthly Mobile TV charges, Olympics is a $10 one-time fee).

If you are not a Bell customer you can still download and access the free preview category of the Bell Mobile TV app, but  will not be able to subscribe to or access any other content.

  1. ONLY allowed to stream via data network on top of having to pay ANOTHER extra monthly fee..? What? No thanks.

  3. This application Bell has for the Winter Olympics is awesome. Kind’ve expensive, but totally worth it for this month alone!

  4. People whine and complain when they are restricted to WiFi only. Now Bell offers 3G for everyone and there’s still complaining!

I do agree though, the app does need some tweaking. I’d love the ability to watch over WiFi. This app will use about 30MB per 10 minutes. I’m not worried since I have a 2GB data plan. The ability of WiFi could be added if they authenticate Bell customers by having them log into their MyBell account.

Reminder: ANY Canadian may download this (Bell/Telus/Rogers) and get access to the free Olympic preview channel, which appears to be TSN right now (over WiFi OR 3G).

  6. If you already pay for Bell satellite you shouldn’t have to pay extra to view it on your phone. I’m hoping for a service where you pay a monthly fee for the content and are able to watch it wherever you want: TV, computer, phone, whatever.

And restricting it to 3G only is a pretty lame move.

  7. Bell must of realized people aren’t raking up extra charges for data overage so they created this app, simply for people to run out of the measly 500MB that most people have. It has much to do about making money than providing the consumer something good.
