Rogers will be the first carrier in North America to release the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10. We had a quick peek at this Android device a couple weeks back and it looks incredible. Some of the questions in the comments were about the Android 1.6 OS that it ships with… by the time this launches it will be a bit outdated as there will be be updates to 2.0 (what the Motorola Milestone is shipping with) and 2.1.
On the official Sony Ericsson blog there is a glimpse of what we can expect in the future as they state: “there will be a software update for the X10 that will upgrade the complete Sony Ericsson User Experience Platform based on newer version of the Android OS”. So this puts an end to some speculation but questions are still surfacing around the timeline and if/when Rogers will push it out.

That’s what Sony says. However, let’s just say that Roger does not have a stellar record regarding Android updates. So I would not be too sure about this until the update is up and running well in my phone.

What? why is the software upgrade is being (officially) restricted by the carrier? that makes no sense.

I’m wondering why Rogers don’t wait a few more week and sell the phone with 2.x inside?
(OK, I know that Telus release the Milestone with Android 2.x on February 18th)

Nicolas Racine is talking thru his hat. Rogers is NOT the restriciting firmware updates, Not for the X10 or the Dream/Magic. It is upto the manufacturer to release firmware updates regarding the OS. The only OS that is an exception is BB.

No Jeeverz, Nicolas is right. Rogers puts their own inferior ROMs on Android devices meaning the update schedule is up to them. Just ask any Dream/Magic owner!
Rogers COULD update ALL their phones to 2.0 tomorrow if they wanted to, but that would defeat their objective of keeping all their customers in forced, pointless software “upgrades”. It’s all about control, and the fact that Rogers wouldn’t know open source if it sat on their face.

I agree with Brandon and Nicolas. I am an unhappy Dream owner, which I just got replaced with a Spica (which is still running 1.5). Rogers CAN put out updates, but they want to slap their branding all over it. HTC had a 1.6 update for the G1 (which is Dream in Canada).
Honestly, it scares me a little to get an X10. Will they update the system when it’s available? Will they make it impossible to root it so you can update it yourself? That 911 “fix” made it so Dream users couldn’t do that anymore, so we were stuck with inferior broken merchandise. Then, they “allowed” me to do another hardware upgrade – which cost me another $200.
Rogers just has me by the proverbial balls.. :S
