textEd.ca is created to teach you about “responsible and respectful” ways to text

Texting in Canada has dramatically increased and everyday there are 100 million text messages sent, this translates to over 3 billion per year. A new site called textED.ca has been created by The Canadian Centre for Child Protection and the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association (CWTA) to “teach teens to be safe, responsible and respectful users of texting technologies”.

The site is fully interactive with games, quizzes, discussion pages and its main target is teens because the amount of “sexting” happening… plus I guess nude pics and videos are flying back and forth ever since picture and video messaging arrived. The aim is to ensure everyone knows the short and long term actions when sending messages. When you check out the site you’ll see there are tips to learn how to deal with textual harassers and more.

Lianna McDonald, Executive Director of the Canadian Centre said “Adolescent behavior is less inhibited with the use of technology, so they tend to say and do things that they might not otherwise do in person. The textED.ca site has been created to help educate youth about how to use technology respectfully and safely, and to know what to do when someone crosses the line.”

  1. I found it really hilarious that this post has a ad for “text dating” below it…..oh irony

  3. I’m not sure what is the saddest part of this, is it the fact that this website is apparently needed, or the fact that the people who published this website feel the need to educate people on what most of us already know. It’s almost insulting, my child (I snoop through their phone all the time) has common sense, and if he doesn’t, he will learn the hard way that there are certain things you can’t do. Live ‘n’ learn!

  4. I think the saddest part is the website itself. I suspect it’s destined to fail miserably.

It reminds me a bit of the first AIDS awareness commercials on TV in Alberta in the 80′s… too prudish and devoid of actual useful information. (The TV commercials featured youngish adults walking through the frame urging us to “think about it, talk about it” and nothing else)

LMAO! (which of course you won’t find in the cool text lingo lists the site features)

  5. I’d also like to point out that the term “sexting” is a purely a media invention and is never used in conversation in real life between actual people.
