TELUS increasing rates by $5 March 4th for specific plans, plus local & long distance overage minutes changing

TELUS introduced their Clear Choice Rate Plans back in November which saw the removal of the dreaded System Access Fees (SAF) and the carrier 911 fees. Telus also states “the price you see is the price you pay”… with this news customers will be happy to know that increases are on the way.

Checking out their site today we found an updated terms of service and on March 4th, 2010 TELUS states that “Your monthly fee will also increase by $5 if you currently subscribe to any of the following features: Call Canada 30, Nationwide 30, North America 35, or Unlimited Web, Email and Instant Messaging.”

These changes are for consumer and business clients… and are an average of about 15% increase. In addition, local and long distance charges will be increasing as well… to a tune of $0.10 per minute.

  2. So, drop the $6.95 access fee and raise prices by $5, then a few months later raise prices by $5 again. Yes, that sounds like a Canadian wireless company.

  3. Looks like it affects only plans that include long-distance or roaming… So likely won’t affect most users.

And… Seems like the fear of competition has dimmed. Nobody aside from the 3 national carriers can compete on those plans since the smaller players (videotron, Wind, etc) don’t have the reach for this.

  5. WHAT?! There is competition here and/or coming and they raise their fees and rates?!?!?! ARE THEY ON CRACK!!!??? I have an acct with them, and you’d better believe I am calling today to cancel. Unless they give me something amazing!!! Just the fact that they have the nerve to do this pisses me off!! WHAT ARE YOU THINKING?!?! UGHHH because it’s not like your rates aren’t already through the roof!!! When I lived in the states I had A LOT more than I have now for 75 a month and I already pay 150 A month now for long distance 3 gigs and 800 mins IT’S CRAP!!! I hope telus goes bankrupt. I will be switching to wind when they come and until they do I will go with SOLO since they are selling sim cards now.

  7. it’s not even that big of a deal. you can’t even get any of the plans anymore. all they are doing is bringing everyone up to par with their current “clear” offerings.

you can’t find any of these “canada 30″ or whatever plans “unlimited web” plans etc etc. they don’t exist anymore.

  8. “Who’s next? Bell? Rogers?”

They have to pretend there is no collusion so they have to wait for a little while. Then, probably Bell followed by Rogers a few weeks or a few months later.

  9. If you take a look its not changing the price of the plans Telus is changing the price of certain add ons! And the additional minute rates are only increasing for people who do not pay $0.35/min yet!

  11. TELUS has been about $5 cheaper than Bell/Rogers when you do the math (Some would say the extra costs from bell comes from their extra minutes, but who the hell wants that many minutes? I’d rather pay $5-$10 less and only have 100 minutes than 400 unused minutes). So makes sense they’d want a raise.

  12. I really dig on mobilesyrup.com – they normally give an unbiased view of the cellular landscape.

With that said, the headline of this post needs to be more specific. They’re increasing the price of a few add-ons, and PER-MINUTE cost ON GRANDFATHERED RATE PLANS ONLY. Headlining anything but is sensationalist, and misleading at best.

Increasing of prices on grandfathered features/plans , is not unheard of – it happens on ALL providers. Also, they’re making the plans simpler for the future, putting everyone on the same playing field, instead of having one with a certain rates, and another with different can be very confusing.

With that said, remember consumers – if you are in a contract, your rates are guaranteed for your term. (That’s the OTHER point of a contract that no one really talks about.)

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not defending any providers, but there’s been a few headlines on mobilesyrup lately that seem like they’ve been written to drum up needless animosity.

  15. These companies should not be raising any prices and the system access fee never really disappeared. At least bell never got rid of it. Those who are still under contract still pay the system access fee because bell has you buy the nuts. Those who sign up for new contracts pay $5 dollars more on their plans. Their price plans offer no value whatsoever. You have to spend over $100 bucks just to get something half decent in regards to long distance, airtime, data etc. In defense of mobilesyrup, they are drawing attention to the fact that these companies simply don’t care about their customers and fair pricing, they only care about their bottom line. One of these days, their execs are going to see what karma is all about when it comes to fairness. Look at alex (ex. bell exec and now PM ceo) from public, he’s getting his dose right now lol

  16. “You have to spend over $100 bucks just to get something half decent in regards to long distance, airtime, data etc.”

Citation needed. I pay $50/month for my usage of unlimited text, fave 5 nationwide, and 300 minutes before 9pm. I’ve never gone over that… and I would consider that “half decent”

$5 dollar increase in the rate plans means the fee is now included in your rate plan – just like the rest of the world operates. If it would have been like that from day one, none of us would be saying a word.

That said, prices are still astronomical.

I was cruising the Verzion site, and the EXACT same phones are available on 2-year contracts for the same prices Canadian providers offer. THAT’S something I would like to see addressed.

Special thanks to Ian, the headline is much clearer now. Mobilesyrup.com continues to rock!

  17. Its a big deal when I have been with Telus for years always on a contract and now they are telling me I will have to pay an addition $5 a month. They are basically trying to force me to change plans. This is not fair.

  18. Oh and the network fee has never come off my plan, so this is just telus trying to rip me off for an extra $5 a month.

I have created a facebook group called “I am against Telus increasing rates for existing customers”

Please join and contact telus with your complaints. Maybe if enough people call into complain they wont go forward with this unfair plan.

  19. Well you sir, have a good plan. However the stupid fab five does nothing for me. They don’t have an ontario long distance so I have to pay for North American long distance, just to call from Oshawa to toronto. If I want to call any long distance number for that matter, even if the person is right beside me. Otherwise it’s like .25 cents a minute. Throw in 300 daytimes minutes, early evening and wknds, unlimited texting, pic and video messaging and you get at least $100. Fab 5 is a joke and they know it. Pick 5 people that you call? What if I use my phone for business? Stupid!

Mike.. ur an i***t. If your paying $150 then change your plan. There’s no way you’re using 3GB/mo so that’s probably where you’re getting raped. And the US market is much different – much higher population – so don’t even bother making a comparison. And have fun with WIND paying $0.35/min to Rogers when outside of coverage.

“I’m lucky my Super Talk 15 plan isn’t listed there. I like my $0.10/min Cdn LD. Also if they do hike up my plan my 3 year contract ends tomorrow!”

Jay, ur also an idot. If you’re complaining about a possible bump from $15 to $20 then your the cheapest man in NA and no one wants your business. And if you cancel and go to another provider then your Smart Talk 15 plan will quickly turn into a Dumb Ass 45 plan.

“So much for “I sign a contract because it protects my price”.”

Joe… did you even sign a contract? most agreements/commitments are verbal. And never are they for price protection purposes. They intended to keep you with the provider to pay off the subsidy on the phone you receive. They can change your pricing whenever they like as long as they give notice. So yes… ur an idot.

“They intended to keep you with the provider to pay off the subsidy on the phone you receive.”

    True.

“And never are they for price protection purposes.”

Not true. Read your fine print. Every service agreement states that you are guaranteed the price you sign at.

Even if they do raise it – call them. They’ll rush to change it back to whatever you had if you’re still under contract. Guaranteed.

    18. Changes
These service terms (including any rates and charges) may be changed unilaterally by TELUS from time to time on at least thirty (30) days’ notice to you, and such changes shall become effective once you use the service after such thirty (30) day period (which use shall be deemed conclusively to indicate acceptance of such changes).

  24. I am not asking for free service, I am merely wanting Telus to understand that they should not treat loyal customers this way. I have been with Telus for over 7 years. The first 4 years of service I had a $45 plan while the last 3 years my plan has been $110. I rarely use all my minutes and I use maybe 1 gig of data a month. I am sure if enough customers phoned in to complain/threaten to leave they might not follow through with this plan. I know its a long shot but what other option do loyal customers have?

  25. @ Cheap – you’re looking at generic agreement terms for your province.

If you sign a contract, and it’s still in place, but they raise your price – call them and they’ll change it back.

Apparently in ON you have to do it within 30 days.

“such changes shall become effective once you use the service after such thirty (30) day period (which use shall be deemed conclusively to indicate acceptance of such changes).”

    is key.

  26. @j.soul
There is nothing that says they have to change your pricing back. My only option would be to stop using the service before the 30 day notice is up. If I were to do that, I’d be hit with a $200 termination fee.

The only option I see currently is to file a complaint with the Commissioner for Complaints for Telecommunications Services. I encourage everyone in the same situation to do so as well.

  27. Do you guys even read the service terms? the contract states your rateplan and included minutes wont change throughout the contract. Feature addons have always been subject to change with all carriers.

“TELUS may change the terms of your service, except for the monthly plan rate and the included number of minutes or volume of data, by giving you 30 days notice with
your bill, by electronic messaging to your device, or by email. You may cancel any optional feature after receiving notice of a price increase for that feature. The new
Service Terms will be posted at telusmobility.com/serviceterms.”

I dont mean to take sides with anyone just thought this was common knowledge, maybe im the only one that fine combs these sorts of things before signing.
