Public Mobile is continuing their quest and looking for answers about the recent Globalive (Wind Mobile) decision. Last week they asked the Federal Court to overturn the decision that allowed Globalive to launch. CEO Alek Krstajic stated “We believe Cabinet’s decision is unfair to other wireless carriers, especially new entrants like Public Mobile that have played by the rules and secured substantial Canadian investment. Furthermore, while we respect the Government’s authority we believe what it has done amounts to a change in law, and only Parliament can change Canadian law.”
Today Krstajic appeared on U.S. based FOX Business Network to discuss the issue and why “if we are going to allow Egyptian money, surely we should allow U.S. money to qualify as well… we think competition is great. We just want to make sure that we can have that same access to foreign capital that others players have… we just think that we should have fair rules and allow the Americans to come north and invest… we’d love to see U.S. capital classified the same way… surely our Governments intent is not to put Egyptian capitol ahead of U.S capital… that would be a travesty”.
Sounds like Public Mobile is looking for some sweet Benjamins…Thoughts?
I think they are. as much as I hate the current system of big 3 forcing us to these ridiculous contracts, the law should be applied to everyone. Whether the law should be changed that’s a different story. The only thing that bothers me was the fact that he was emphasizing EGYPTIAN nature of foreign investment in FOX. I mean come on, who are you kidding !!!!

WTF. At 1:04 he says “we are not looking to overturn the decision that allows this company – Globalive – to operate”
And yet they are filing for an overturn on the decision, which would prevent Wind Mobile from operating in Canada.
This guy is full of himself. He isn’t for more competition, hes solely for making money.
Wont be giving this guy my money.
I dont care if Wind is backed by Globalive, if they bring competition into Canada (which this country sorely needs) then more power to them.

the ceo of a CANADIAN cellular company complaining about EGYPTIAN money on an AMERICAN network? hmmmm
Simply PATHETIC! No one made a big deal when Tim Horton’s was owned by an AMERICAN company up until just recently. Heaven forbid they get money from someone who does not live in our country but wants to INVEST in a company in our country. Just like high school, who’s the next to go and squeel to mommy?? Grow up people!!!!!!!!

The thing that they are missing is that the law doesnt restrict financing but ownership. A company cannot be foreign owned, but CAN be financed by foreign banks or companies. Financing does not = ownership. There is nothing stopping Public from borrowing money from an American company, the laws only stop the American company from owning more than a certain percent of Public. They are just creating a stink for Publicity, and don’t seem to know what they are talking about.

He is self serving. Basically saying let me make some money so I can sell my company to one of the big 3 and buy a new house. This guy uses the guise of saying he has fairness and Canadian guidelines in mind but he has nothing in mind other than how he can turn a quick buck. Understandable but definately not getting my business with all the whining spewing from his pie hole.

Public Mobile just completely damaged their image and reputation as a new comer before they even go public…….. BTW, no one really cares about the lawsuit, the majority of Canadian people just want to bring in more competitions in order to lower its cell service rates. The Government of Canada really needs to change that ownership regulation. Instead, we should encourage foreign investors to come in with $ and skill to boost our economy.

Its funny how uneducated some of your people commenting are.. Ever though that creating this “stink” is giving Public a lot of media publicity before launch? Ever thought Public is the front runner in this battle now that it is them who have filed this lawsuit? The incumbents wanted to have this lawsuit clearly, since the decision by Tony Clement was techinically “illegal”, but Public went first.
From the point of view of a growing business, Public definatel did the right thing, which is quite obvious because the people running this company are definately a lot smarter than you people making dumb comments..

First of all Alex Krstajic has some thing against Egyptians look it up on youtube when the 3 auction winners were talking about they were going to bring competition to Canada Alex Krstajic told Tony Lacavera that hes young and succesfull and he could find other backers that he dosn’t need “the Egyptians” money to back his company. Im sure you can draw your own conclusion on how Alex Krstajic’s reasoning is about.

Steve the fact that the government sold them spectrum in canada is not the fault of Globalive. Second of all Rogers was abeled to partner with Atnt in the past and the CRTC without a doubt or a single question about is it going to hurt bent over and took in the a*s because its what the crtc does. Third of all Public mobile doesn’t intend on stay here for long term. They plan on selling to one of the big 3 after 3-5 years so I don’t see why they should be given the oppertunity to have additional funding because they want to sell out! And its obvios to me Steve that your an Idiot who likes to bash people who feel the opposite of what you think!

@steve: “Its funny how uneducated some of your people commenting are..” Need I say more?
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Yes, I believe that pushing this issue on Fox news is bad publicity but I have no issue with it. As it stands now, Public Mobile is dead in the water. Their offering was supposed to be a $40/mth unlimited talk & text plan but Wind’s $35/mth unlimited talk & 50 text plan (+$5 for unlimited text) has that offer matched even before PM has launched. PM has to do whatever they can to beat Wind right now. Why would anyone wait for PM to launch, use their outdated CDMA technology and pay the same rates they can pay now?

re: steve. When commenting on the level of intelligence of others, it would be helpful to use proper grammar. It wouldn’t hurt to use spell check either. Public has the worst offering of all the newcomers. I can’t even fathom why they are launching to begin with. They have one phone that looks like you could purchase it at a petro canada gas station. They are using CDMA when everyone else is running from it. They are clearly out of touch with what Canadians want. It probably stems from the fact that Alex is now on the other side of the fence. He’s not one of the big three, so he can’t force people into contracts like he did when he worked for bell. I guess it sucks to be alex right now. We have a choice and the choice that people want is to have leading edge technology at affordable rates. Consumers wait in line for the iphone and blackberries, not ZTE watchamacallits. So now he goes to FOX news (american station which doesn’t have a good history with Canadians to begin with) to complain about things in Canada. Kinda traitorous if you ask me. It makes us look bad as a country, as if to say we can’t handle our own problems. FOX of course will take any garbage that they can get, which is probably why Alex hasn’t really been on any Canadian television stations yet.

My apologies for the typos in my previous paragraph, thats what happens when you type fast. It is still clear that the people who comment on this blog are not aware of the target market of Public. Public is targeting the 35% of Canadians that dont have a cell phone alltogether, primarily because of unpredictable bills and the high cost in Canada. I’m also sure that Public will not be launching with only one phone, more like 4 to start with, just like Wind. Just look at the price point of Wind, with phones ranging from $130-$450. Public will most likely be launching with prices ranging from $70-$200, perfect for the lower income market wich Public is going after anyways.

And yes, Public is using a CDMA network to start. If you think about who they are going after, a fraction of these people will know the difference between CDMA and GSM. Also, the target market is aimed at people who do not travel outside of their daily routine, such as work or school, once again showing that GSM would not be necessary for these people. Look, Public is clearly not aiming at businessmen and the “cool” kids who want blackberrys and iphones, therefore it is a completely different target market than Wind or DAVE, who carryu smartphones and data plans.

Not a wind employee. Just someone who is sick of being screwed by my phone company. If you want to start a lawsuit against someone, how about the big three. I am sure there’s a nice lawsuit in there somewhere. I completely understand the target market of public. If that is their target market, then what are they complaining about?
