Because it makes them look good compared to other carriers and to the less informed crowd who are shopping around christmas time to buy their wives, husbands, daughters, sons, etc. new flashy cellphones with (expensive over-rated) cellphone plans! Viola! Mystery solved. This is nothing new. Fido raised their price $5 then dropped it around Christmas time.. hmm wonder why? Cellcos have been getting away with murder -literally- (i.e., the 911 fee scandal) for years and it is an insult to human intelligence to see them charge over $100 a month with lousy plans that have a handful of "minutes" that are in reality a fraction of what they advertize because they round up everything to the next minute. Billing for what we use (by the second) should be the law of the land like it is in Europe. The lack of call display and charging for received sms is a ripoff that is actually hurting mobile telephony and their business in general but they are too thick to realize that, just like they were when they were charging $50,000 a month for extensive use of the internet --a couple of years ago. Then overnight the cost went down to $5 a month with the HTC Touch on Bell because of the threat of the iPhone on Rogers (which did not even materialize). For the most part, our cellcos are run by grossly incompetent managers who can't see beyond their noses. Guys, consider yourself lucky so far.
