It could be many things, such as the entrance of WIND Mobile, but it’s very ironic timing that Fido has reduced the monthly cost (again) of their CityFido plan. It’s a $5 drop on their 2,000 unlimited local minute and text plan, but this equates to a 12.5% reduction.
With any of these plans you must read the fine print. The CityFido plans have no Caller ID or Voice Mail and the 2,000 minutes is only applicable in their calling zone (which also increased a bit) and any “airtime used for calls made and received outside the CityFido zone cost 35¢ per minute”. The CityFido plans also have unlimited text messages and no System Access Fees. Plus as a bonus they are offering to waive the “Activation Fee” of $35. Fido is owned by Rogers and will eventually continue to expand their reach with the CityFido offerings as competition heats up.
When slightly compared to new carrier WIND Mobile who offers an unlimited plan for $45 with no contract to sign (first month is also free). In addition, WIND gives free Canada-wide calling and free incoming calls while you’re int he WIND Home Zone area (limited reach now). They also offer free voice mail, caller ID, call waiting, free incoming/outgoing text messages and free WIND to WIND calling across Canada. However, with being a new wireless entrant they are just getting started and building out their reach. In January we will see them launch in Vancouver, Edmonton and Ottawa.
As I said, make sure you do the research on the fine print of any plan you get. Over the next few months we’ll only see the plans drop in price and become more competitive. If you are with a carrier you can always call their “customer retention department” and see if you can get the add-ons included in your monthly cost. All carriers want to keep your business.
More here at Fido
(Thanks Shaun)
yeeahh.. The big 3 will no doubt be making small attempts with their ‘cheap brand’ subsidiaries are first. Not gonna work, Canadians are smarter than that (I hope…)

Unfortunately (most) Canadians have proved they are NOT smarter then that – they fall for the advertisement that sounds most convincing, or the hardware that looks the flashiest despite the crappy plan that might come attached to it.
Just recently I had two family members sign up with Fido on plans that don’t even compare to the new Wind plans (or many other better Fido plans!) just because of a lack of being informed. If they were better informed they could have went with Wind, had unlimited minutes (instead of only 100 peak that they now have) and would have been much happier.
There are savvy shoppers in the cellular market, don’t get me wrong, but there are also plenty of stupid ones who put form before function, or are just completely oblivious to the options.

thats is the reason fido alerted to employees. $5 cost reduction and increased local area in response to wind mobile. as only torono and calgary got larger coverage. all cities will benifit from price reduction, that was increased that same $5 not long before for the reason of lower back to the original in hopes of folling people of a new and grate deal.. lmao

You hit the nail right on the head. The savvy shoppers keep an eye on this site, HoFo, etc. but there are not enough of us –yet. Keep spreading the word. The more the merrier.
Cellcos have been getting away with murder -literally- (i.e., the 911 fee scandal) for years and it is an insult to human intelligence to see them charge over $100 a month with lousy plans that have a handful of “minutes” that are in reality a fraction of what they advertize because they round up everything to the next minute. Billing for what we use (by the second) should be the law of the land like it is in Europe.
The lack of call display and charging for received sms is a ripoff that is actually hurting mobile telephony and their business in general but they are too thick to realize that, just like they were when they were charging $50,000 a month for extensive use of the internet –a couple of years ago. Then overnight the cost went down to $5 a month with the HTC Touch on Bell because of the threat of the iPhone on Rogers (which did not even materialize).
For the most part, our cellcos are run by grossly incompetent managers who can’t see beyond their noses. Guys, consider yourself lucky so far. If we can get a little bit of competition going here you may just have to get a real job for a living.

big deal, steal doesn’t compete with solos in the city plan where you get 250 more minutes for the same price

Its amazing how this decrease in price gets such positive headlines; when in fact the same city fido got an increase of the same 12% not too long ago and very little in the way of publicity here that i can remember; ohh wait; advertising does in fact pay the bills, for all including mobilesyrup…hmm…2+2=…

Here is the Fido story..
October 2009 City Fido is $40.00
October 2009 City Fido is $45.00 (without notice)
December 2009 City Fido is $40.00
This all fine the price came back down. But the sad part is that I dont see a mention of this in the original article. Was it by design? Hope not!!!
Guys this is no reduction.. its just one step backward then forward again.
But I will give it to Fido for territory, that has increased.
We need WIND here fast, actually desperately fast!!!

Next will come Rogers “price drop” when in fact it will really be a return to where prices were months ago.

Price drop my *** !!!
This is the original price of the CityFido so i don’t see why this isn’t mentioned in the article ? Honest omission or deliberate mistake.. ?

This is nothing new. Fido raised their price $5 then dropped it around Christmas time.. hmm wonder why? Because it makes them look good compared to other carriers and to the less informed crowd who are shopping around christmas time to buy their wives, husbands, daughters, sons, etc. new flashy cellphones with (expensive over-rated) cellphone plans! Viola!
Mystery solved.
