Confirmed: Rogers HTC Magic and Dream not getting Android 1.6

If you joined the revolution and got an HTC Magic and Dream from Rogers you are probably wondering when the upgrade is happening to Android 1.6?. Well, it’s not and it’s now confirmed.

According to the HTC website in their upgrade section the question is “Can I upgrade my Rogers Magic device to Android 1.6?”… Owners are already upset (check out our Forum here) as it’s now confirmed:

“HTC is not currently planning any Android 1.6 upgrades for Rogers Dream or Magic. Android 1.6 was only made available for “Google”-branded devices such as the G1. It is not available for HTC-branded products such as the Dream or Magic, which use Android 1.5. We believe that Android 1.5 is a stable and reliable software platform that delivers a terrific user experience.”

  1. And this is my problem with Android. Much like my Blackberry, support drops off the older devices. iPhones on the other hand? Updated every time, all at the same time, with everything they can.

This is the advantage Apple has with control of their devices. RIM, android manufacturers all need to go through the carrier, and because of the wide ranges of devices older ones drop off support very quickly. ISPs don’t want to provide support on a device, use bandwidth on a product. They’d rather drive you into the option of buying new hardware. Sure the original iPhone may stop receiving support but by that time you’re bound to have upgraded your hardware. RIM, HTC, etc. on the other hand? New devices with a huge difference in hardware every few months.

    • Roger always sucks.

I unlocked a Rogers HTC Dream and am now using it with Bell whose customer service is fantastic. Compared to friends’ experience with Rogers, I’m in paradise.

Screw Rogers. Go with Bell Mobility!!!!!!!

  4. 1.5 for the Rogers Dream & Magic were customized for/by Rogers. We already know 1.6 works on these phones, the truth is probably closer to HTC won’t be issuing an update for these phones because Rogers hasn’t asked for it. That’s my guess.

  5. This is just a speculation, but it doesn’t make sense for Rogers to upgrade to 1.6 when 2.0 or 2.1 are just around the bend.

I expect HTC to release HTC 2.1 with sense come firs quarter of 2010

  6. this is frustrating, i am aware rogers cares only about making money. however the point of buying an android device is that they can be customized the way you want it. so its disusting that rogers coined the marketing as “join the revolution” when really these devices are no different than any other phone rogers offers becuase they are so crippled. plus eventually apps on the android marketplace wont support 1.5. also rogers has been giving people the runaround saying they have 1.6 but the download is a bug fix for 1.5! im so glad i didnt buy a dream i was so close too

  7. I’m enjoying my Rogers Magic running Android 1.6 Donut. I rooted my phone (google Relentless Rooter for info) and installed the RAV 1.62 Donut ROM. I’ve got access to paid apps after installing Market Enabler, and all the 1.6 Goodness as well. All of this is no thanks to Rogers, but instead, thanks to the community at xda-developers.com.

  9. Rogers, Rogers, Rogers…….

Well the Revolution did not last long, further proof that all you want is our money and really don’t care about your customers…….

I am embarrassed that i once again have been bent over a barrel by Rogers….

I guess Rogers really does not care to catch on the android wave and support their products they would just rather sell us new phones. Well all this negative publicity in regards to android will cause new users to look elsewhere due to the lack of support and spend their money with another company. I have no desire to support Rogers when they will not even stand by their own products.

They wonder why people are look for alternatives to the big 3 ,well this is just one of many reasons why.

This experience has left me a much more educated buyer and i will not spend my hard earned money with robbers anymore.

1.6 should not even be a question they should be working on getting 2.0…..wow too much……

    HTC, HTC, HTC

Well all the blame cannot go to Rogers either cause at the end of the day this is a HTC phone and is obvious they just want to sell handsets but by allowing carriers to not provide updates for the phones they certainly are hurting their image and will cause android users to look at others brands as well.

Great OS but…….You need to learn a thing or two from the iphone and that you need to rollout these updates across the board on these phones just not ones you brand and make. Failing to do so is a major mistake and will cost you in the long run. While android may be taking off and getting a larger market share how do you think the sales are going to be in a few years when android owners are tired of being handcuffed from the carriers and manufactures of your phones by poor support….I love my android phone but i tell you a unlocked iphone is looking allot more attractive to me specially in the long run….

In the mean time putting pressure on Rogers and all the negative press they are going to receive on this and loss of revenue may force their hands to get them off their cheap lazy butts and do something about this issue…

All i have to say is thank god my contract is up this summer ….nexus, wind, dave, public will all get a chance to get my money since Rogers has proven all they care about is your money not customer satisfaction.

  11. Look at the HTC support page again. Now the Magic will get HTC Sense UI on Android 1.5 by February 2010. By mid year, Android 2.1 update (also with HTC Sense UI) will be available for the purchasers of the HTC Magic.

Unfortunately for the Dream owners, the upgrade path stops at 1.5 with HTC Sense.

  12. There is something missing from this post, and that is what it says on the HTC site right after that….

Can I upgrade my Rogers Dream device to Android 1.6? close
HTC is not currently planning any Android 1.6 upgrades for Rogers Dream. Android 1.6 was only made available for “Google”-branded devices such as the G1. It is not available for HTC-branded products such as the Dream or Magic, which use Android 1.5. We believe that Android 1.5 is a stable and reliable software platform that delivers a terrific user experience. However, HTC will be implementing an update for the 1.5 OS to HTC Dream by early February 2010.

Note they are releasing SOME SORT of update, wonder what it’ll be. Well early February is just around the corner, so I guess we’ll see in a couple of weeks.

    If you want more frequent updates for the phone;

    http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Full_Update_Guide_-_Rogers_Dream_EBI1_to_CyanogenMod

Its pretty str8 forward if you want to try, instructions are step-by-step. It is important to follow them EXACTLY. It seems like a lot of steps, but you only have to do it once. There are updates once every week or so, but there is an app in the appstore that allows you to do this with a couple of clicks. You’ll never be behind the times again ;-) . On-screen kbd and MULTI TOUCH zoom in the browser and gallery are enabled.
