A patent does not mean they intend to use this technology. Apple files patents they never intend to use. 2. Google was the first to think about this, they were going to give free phones to people but there was an ad requirement, if Apple gave people a free iPhone but you had to look at one ad a day some people would opp in for that. 3. This could be a competitive move to patent Ad technology so that Google can not use it to give free phones away and steal market share. The optics of using technology like this are extremely poor and would not likely be used by any company, let alone Apple. This does not fit their brand in any way. It is more likely they hope other companies will pick up on this and try it, shooting themselves in the foot. Seeding misinformation is a common competitive tactic Apple uses routinely to throw off rivals. I think some perspective is needed here.

2. Google was the first to think about this, they were going to give free phones to people but there was an ad requirement, if Apple gave people a free iPhone but you had to look at one ad a day some people would opp in for that.
