At the HTC launch party today we got an understanding of what truly motivated them to create their new “YOU” brand direction, and also the philosophy of the tag line “Quietly Brilliant”. We have video of Francois Gravel, Managing Director for HTC in Canada and Steve Seto, Executive Director, Marketing at HTC America speaking passionately about this and it’s at the bottom of this post.
For now, I got to have another look at the TELUS HTC Hero. This little beast of a device will possibly the surprise device that comes out the of long awaited HSPA launches. There are many notable devices, not just on TELUS, such as the OMNIA II on Bell, but the Android-powered Hero has so many great features tucked into such a small/thin package (135 grams and dimensions are 112 x 56.2 x 14.35mm).
For example, it’s got a 3.2-inch LCD touchscreen with a HVGA resolution of 320×480 (has an accelerometer), 5 megapixel camera with auto-focus and video, can hold up to 16GB with a microSD card (TELUS ships with a 2GB card), 3,5 mm headset jack, Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth 2.0 ,Google Maps, access to the Android Market (No Paid apps available yet)… and this is the first device to have HTC Sense, which you can fully customize the device to how you want to.
We sat down with Jonathan Cocklin of HTC and he gave a good run through all the features. Check out the video here: (It’s still uploading to YouTube so it might be a bit fuzzy for a while)

Does the Telus HTC Hero come with Android 1.5 or 2.0?

I am really tempted to pick this up. I haven’t heard one way or the other though whether or not this will be getting the 2.0 treatment, and if it isn’t, it doesn’t really make sense to jump on the android bandwagon until a handset that comes out here does.

I believe it comes with 1.5 or 1.6 right out of the box. However, HTC have announced that they are currently underway porting the Sense UI in the Hero to run on Eclair 2.0, and this is for all HTC Heros. So Itll be coming one way or another.

I love this phone!
I would even consider switching carriers for it.
I hope Rogers gets this phone eventually, I’m stuck in a contract

If you’re with Rogers, then pick up the HTC Magic. Hardware is virtually identicle. You can install the Hero ROM on it so you get SenseUI and multitouch.
I just picked one up for $350 and planning on doing exactly that. And I’m with Bell! lol

I really would love to get the Hero, but with Telus’s sub-par plans and the device looking kind of “slow” in that demo, I’m second guessing…

Actually so far Telus and HTC are really cagey on whether the Telus Hero will get Android 2.0 – which may mean they’re not?!!?
Fingers crossed… what I’m reading is that Telus has to request the update, and if they don’t, HTC won’t release it for Telus phones (which run on a different frequency band than any other Hero phones worldwide apparently). If they don’t I’m gonna be really dissapointed with an otherwise awesome phone
