This Ontario law that bans the use of hand-held devices while driving (Bill 118) is just over a week old now and a new survey has popped up. TNS Canadian Facts conducted an internet survey of 1,007 consumers between October 22nd to 27th, 2009.
Michael Ennamorato, EVP at TNS said “Half of Canadians would support a more comprehensive ban, but the attitudes along generational lines are really striking. Older Canadians are far more supportive of a total ban than their younger, multi-tasking counterparts.”
From this survey the numbers look like this:
- 6 in 10 Canadians (58%) aged 50 and older would support a total ban on cellphone usage while driving
- 3 in 10 (27%) between the ages of 18 and 24 would support a total ban on cellphone usage while driving
- Regionally, 44% of Canadians living in the Prairies say they support a comprehensive ban
- 55% of residents of Quebec, where the law already is in effect say they support a comprehensive ban
- In British Columbia 55% would favour a total ban on cellphone use while driving
- In Ontario, 47% would favour a total ban on cellphone use while driving
- 42% say they have purchased a hands-free device for their vehicle.
- 17% plan to get one soon
- 39% have no intention of acquiring a hands-free phone or accessory
- 65% of people in Ontario believe the police will enforce the new law.

Coming soon an Industry Canada funded study finds that chewing gum with driving increases your risks, private member bill to ban gum in cars… for your own good.
Put me down on the stay out of my life side. I am fully willing to be held accountable for my actions and accept the responsibility and consequences of my decisions. I do not need nor want the government to be my nanny and make all my decisions for me.
Can I drive and talk on the phone… probably. Can I drive and text… nope so I don’t do it. I also don’t try and program my GPS, use my netbook, do my hair, put on makeup, do my nails, take notes on a conference call, read the paper, watch videos, or many other amazing stupid things I have seen other drives do in heavy rush hour traffic.
Good thing I have the government making the road safer for me by banning cellphone usage. I’ll slepp better now.
