I am also on Fido and am thinking of buying a Telus Hero (at full price) for use on Fido. So the question is: does Telus lock the phone in such a manner that it cannot be unlocked and used on another network? I believe that this is technically possible, and I would hate to buy the phone and find that I cannot get it unlocked.

No but they can lock the handset. If you're going to pay full price by an unlocked handset from somebody like pure mobile. If you get the Telus handset you'll have to pay to get it unlocked (or unlock it yourself if you're tech savvy).

Okay, so I've been waiting for the HTC Hero for quite sometime. I was about to pull the trigger and buy overseas even though it'd be 2g and now it's here on Telus. So I need help in understanding this. Currently I'm on Fido, I plan to buy the Hero from Telus, full price so I don't have contract, however if I pop my sim in it, the phone is good to go on the Fido network? It sounds like there will be restrictions from the comments above? I figured it's 3g banding I'm good to go as long as I have a sim, and also since it's Google, Telus can't muck with the OS.

I'd still suggest you wait. Even if you don't want to jump to a new carrier, maybe the big 3 will adjust their prices to match the newcomers. Or threatening to jump will net you a better deal from their retentions department.

Unless you're on an existing contract, in which case Telus will do two things:

1) Tell you your unlimited CDMA data plan rate is incompatible with the new network operating costs and force you into a new data plan.

2) Toss you $100 dollars towards a new HSPA handset and tell you to be on your way. They're not interested in keeping accounts only poaching new ones from Rogers.

I've said this in other posts but I make out better by cancelling my current contract, paying the penalty and getting the new account rate for an HTC hero than I do taking the upgrade credit and signing up for another 3 years. This is above and beyond them retracting the dropped calls clause in light of the massive network outages caused by the network upgrades. Thanks for the loyalty rewards Telus, it's been well worth the wait... :|

I have :

150 mins
1gb data
1000 texts
after 6 evening and weekends free

Thats 50$. Add on my caller id package, system access fee, taxes it comes to over 80$ a month. This is on rogers with the HTC Dream. Its out ragous. Blackberrys have awesome plans but there price is higher and i really like android. Also Rogers coverage is crap. But rumor is that rogers is getting the Motorola Sholes witch i really want so right now i don't have a clue what im going to do. And im not looking forward to Dave or Wind because there not established here yet so there coverage is going to take awhile to get up to the standards of telus and bell

The holiday shopping season is more likely for rate drops, as once Bell and Telus start selling HSPA handsets *everybody* will be gunning for your business...

They're not I'm a Telus subscriber and I'm getting screwed out of my unlimited data plan. My advice (as well as my plan) is to buy an unlocked Hero. That way I'm not tethered to a network and can go with whoever offers the best rates. I mean think about it, who wants to be on a three year contract when we know Dave wireless will be coming to market with an HSPA+ network?

I'm expecting to see some rate drops early next year as the new entrants show up with aggressive rates designed to cut into the big 3's market share. Were I in their shoes I'd be willing to take a loss to poach customers from Belus and Rogers.
