TELUS has sent out an e-mail to their clients about “Important changes to U.S. roaming” fee. Effective November 5th they are introducing a new $1.45 per minute flat rate roaming charge for any calls you make in the U.S.
They say “Through our strategic roaming partnerships, you have access to some of the fastest and most comprehensive coverage whenever you’re in the U.S. And now to make it easier for you to track your roaming charges, we’re introducing a new $1.45/min flat rate to any calls you make in the U.S. This new flat rate will replace the multiple charges that sometimes applied when you previously made calls south of the border and may have later caused you some confusion when your bill arrived… If you are on a Talk North America or Work North America plan, you will not be affected by this change.”
But I was paying 0.35/min for LD and 0.95/min for roaming so it was high and confusing and now it’s higher and just as maddening.
Thanks Telus.
At least my plan still has free sms to US numbers…these new “international” sms fees are nuts.

Previously charges in USA were 0.95$ for roaming + 0.50$ long distance. It’s the same price…

Except if you called locally in the US (eg in Seattle and call Seattle) you only paid 95 cents. Overall it is a price increase.

Does this give customers grounds to get out of their contracts?

I’m with telus and I use to pay .20 roaming & .20 long distance, this is a 265 percent increase! I keep hearing that cellular prices in Canada are coming down but every couple of months it would seem they are raising prices, first it was long distance, then sms, now roaming. Could someone explain how this is getting more competitive?

Like Richard asked, does this now under the new ‘law’ give me the customer the right to get out of my contract with telus?
