Who wants a Palm Pre for $999.99?

fs-999

Ouch. We know that us Canadians pay a premium to have the latest mobile devices… but this is crazy! Yesterday we saw Future Shop promoting the in-store availability of the unreleased Palm Pre. Today they have put the Palm Pre as “This product is only available in-store” for a whopping $999.99! Could this be the outright price? Probably not as Bell has put a retail value of the Pre at $650.

Bell will officially release the Pre tomorrow across Canada, but we’ve heard that those who pre-ordered were able to pick up their device today. Time will tell and I’m sure pictures will follow.

No worries about this Future Shop price – it will drop down to the regular price of $599.99 on a 3-year in no time. We hope.

  3. lol the pre is not worth a grand off contract let alone 600 ON a 3 year term. Especially with some of those build quality issues.

  4. $599 on a 3-yr is ridiculous. I don’t think anyone’s hoping for that. I think Mike Churchill’s got the right idea.

$999 is so high, even selling an unlocked and unbranded version (which I’m sure they’re not.) Hold out for Wind Mobile! No contracts!

  5. I just checked Bell’s site and they’re selling it for $199 on a 3yr. I think this is just a typo on Futureshop’s part. Even the headline for the device seems wrong on the Futureshop site:
“Bell Palm Pre 3G Smartphone – Year Agreement – In-Store Only”

Shouldn’t it say 3 Year? The fine print at the bottom of the page says 2yr and 1yr pricing is available in store, so we’re probably supposed to be seeing the 3yr price, but we’re clearly not. Yet.

  8. On eBay someone just sold a crypt right above Marilyn Monroe’s for US$4.6 million, so I guess everything is possible.

But one grand for a first generation phone that’s obsolete right out of the box, with quality issues, is a no-no. What are they thinking?
