Ever since I got hold of the upcoming TELUS Touch Pro2 I have not been able to put it down. Sure the device is not the lightest out there but it can do majority of everything I truly need, such as my e-mail, contacts, calendar, music, pictures and web.
If you want to skip the written review then scroll all the way down and see the video below. The TELUS Touch Pro2 has a 3.6 inch touchscreen with a slide-out 5 row QWERTY keyboard. The are a few main features that make this one to consider.
First up is the screen, this thing tilts which makes it incredibly easier to use and makes watching your videos or playing games that much more fun. Plus this has HTC’s TouchFLO 3D which has some nice improvement, one being how incredibly responsive it is… and the other is you can now view all your programs and application in landscape mode, not just in portrait. Second is the keyboard. The actual keys are much bigger than we’ve seen in the past and tying e-mail or text messages are really a joke. There will be no more frustration with incorrectly typing the wrong letter. In addition, they have included dedicated keys for your e-mail, text message, web, directional keys to make you get to the places you want faster.
This comes loaded with Windows Mobile 6.1 so you can get all your e-mails directly sent to your device. You can easily find an e-mail or and e-mail from a contact by typing out the first few letters which again makes things quicker to accomplish. Hopefully there will be future updates to the Windows Mobile 6.5 or even the upcoming Windows Mobile 7. For your text messaging the maximum number of characters is 130 and the all your texts show up in a threaded manner so you can always know follow what your conversation was.
The speakers are decent. Located at the back of the Touch Pro2 and the sound can be adjusted by the volume rocker on the left hand side. A big plus about this device is that it comes with a 3.5mm headset jack, gone are the days of a USB jack. This can play all your music as it can hold up to 16GB with a microSD card (located under the back cover on the right hand side). The Touch Pro2 also has a 3.2 megapixel camera (no flash) and has video capabilities.
One point to mention is that is a World Edition and comes with a SIM card slot, so you’ll be able to travel the world and still be connected. I believe we’ll see more devices from TELUS over the next few months with this feature as they make the switch to their new network. The Touch Pro2 also is Wi-Fi capable and we found the speeds fast and makes surfing the web a lot of fun. Opera Mobile is loaded in and you can zoom in to a web page with the zoom feature above the hard keys on the front of the device. Everything loaded fast and there were no problems with the quality. Even YouTube streamed incredibly fast.
The call quality was good, people could hear us clearly and had no problems hearing others. No dropped calls to report to-date. Check out the full video review here:

Were there any lock-up issues when you left it charging overnight? First gen Diamonds and Pros seem to be plagued with this issue. My Diamond, even with the latest updates, locks up pretty regularly so I can’t use it as an alarm clock

if you have lock ups flash a new rom on it – I have a 6.5 rom with Rhodium TouchFlo 2 fully loaded – not a single problem… it’s fantastic.

“There will be no more frustration with incorrectly typing the wring (sic) letter.”
I thought that was funny.
The obvious weakness is Windows Mobile 6.1 which is far from bug-free but fairly manageable with the inevitable soft reset every day or so. Wifi on a world phone is important and this is what keeps me away from the new Berry as it would be very expensive to use overseas. If wifi supported UMA that would be awesome.

I actually haven’t rebooted my WM device for months and months. Touch Pro also makes it easy to just stay out of most of the ugly UI.

in the radio settings, can you toggle what radios you want on or off? (gor gsm, edge and hspa)

GSM Band coverage really needed here! is it 850-1900 or is it limited to only European bands. Thank you…
Also, do you see any coverage for HSPA or is it only EVDO compatible?

There is HSDPA and I have been assured by telus reps (multiple) that the phone will work with Telus HSDPA,
it is quad band GSM although, 2 bands may be locked out. not sure about that.

there’s always ways to open locked doors
They are locking it to cut the bands for NA… we’ll just need to unlock that – should be a program online very shortly for that…

In your review I didn’t see anything about Footprints or the pre-cache/fetching capabilities of Touch Flow w/ Opera… did you see this option? This was a very cool technology they have been talking about.

Definitely stoked for this phone. Still a little curious on the HSPA frequencies for North America, but aside from that the only question is -when- I should buy the phone.
On release date, or wait for a snazzy student plan in August.

Good to see that they’ve included the 3.5mm jack, but any idea if the htc ExtUSB port still supports tv-out on this World edition??

I talked to a Telus rep (you know all those stores that say they’re Telus in BC aren’t Telus at all… they’re outsourced partners.)
He has the telus rep coming into his store next week – they are setting up shop downstairs in the Terasung building off Burard and showing the phone off. He believes they’ll have units when they come in or have them shipped shortly before.
I had one CSR tell me early august, but she didn’t know what she was talking about (she also said possibly September) I have a feeling it will either be this Monday or next.

I think the TP2 might come out some time today because the Telus site said they’re making some “improvements.” That could either mean they’re releasing the TP2, or they’re just simply improving the site.

Anyone who thinks a pictures quality is based on mega-pixels is ignorant, but going from your language on a public forum I guess that par for you. I’ll take a nice lens and flash over a high mega-pixel camera any day. The sensors are just too small to use high pixel counts as you’ll just get huge noise ratios.

Has anyone else had issues with this phone powering off when you slide the keyboard closed? I am on my second unit which I picked up yesterday. Before I even left the Telus store I realized the new unit did the exact same thing. I slid the keyboard open, then closed and it powered off. I have to push the power button to get it to come back on. Very frustrating. I showed the Telus clerk who was stunned too. So I have ordered a third unit…
