Crikey… no recession in Saskatchewan!
SaskTel announced their 2008 financial results and Wireless revenues surged 16.2% from last year to $350.2 million. Activations increased by 49,802 to bring the total to 502,020. “The average revenue per cellular subscriber increased to $60.80, up from $57.90 as cellular customers continue to increase usage of services such as text messaging and downloadable ring tones.”
Standard corporate words by Ken Cheveldayoff, Minister of Crown Corporations said “As SaskTel moves into its second century, it has achieved impressive financial results and a continued legacy of delivering world-class products and services to its business and residential customers in the communities it serves. The Government of Saskatchewan has a strong commitment to the Crown sector and the people of Saskatchewan can look forward to continued investment in SaskTel’s infrastructure bringing improved and expanded services in 2009 and beyond.”

Sasktel has been working hard to push people out of land lines and into cell lines. In 2009, Sasktel land line has no pre-authorized payment option requiring residential customers to visit a Sasktel store or mail in a check once a month. Sasktel celluar will deduct from your bank account. As a result, many people ditch their land lines and go cellular for convenience.
Also, Sasktel has a monopoly in SK. Rogers has a few towers, but lousy reception. SaskTel covers most of the province. Telus is available, but uses the Sasktel network, and apparently the agreements between the two companies means Telus subscribers in SK are limited. In short, Sasktel is the only option in SK.
Considering these factors, it is no wonder their cell revenue is up. Although considering 1MB of data transfer costs $15 a month, Saskatchewan is still stuck in the dark ages of communications.
