Report released by Research and Markets of the “3Q08 Canada Mobile Forecast”. Here are some highlights:
- Q1.08 subscriber numbers, we are now forecasting the wireless penetration level in Canada to be 71.1% in 2010 (compared to our previous forecast of 71.4%). Total subscribers in Canada are forecasted to increase from 20.0 million in 2008 to 24.4 million in 2010.
- Given the success of the spectrum auction and the entry of new players, we are now forecasting a slight decline in market shares among the incumbent operators on Canada. While we do not provide a forecast for Bell Mobility, we think that it’s current 31% market share is the most vulnerable to erosion by new entrants. We continue to view Rogers Wireless as the strongest incumbent wireless operator and expect its market share to be 36.5% of subscribers in 2010 (previously 37%).
- We forecast that Rogers Wireless will receive the highest ARPU (average revenue per user) among other wireless operators in 2010 at US$ 65.26 per month (previously, our estimate was US$ 62.31 for Rogers). Rogers Wireless will also have the highest MOU (minutes of use) per subscriber at 714 minutes per month in 2010.
hmmm, I’m always a bit suspicious of data coming from a research firm that doesn’t know what the acronym “ARPU” stands for… Maybe it’s a typo, but that opens up a whole slew of fact checking issues. Either way, a research firm that doesn’t know what the acronym of the main measurement standard in the industry is or that doesn’t do proper fact checking before publication is a bit suspect in my books.

Quote:
:ARPU is an acronym for average revenue per user or average revenue per unit.
This term is used by companies that offer subscription services to clients for example, telephone carriers, Internet Service Providers, and Hosters etc. It is a measure of the revenue generated by one customer phone, pager, etc., per month. In mobile telephony, ARPU includes not only the revenues billed to the customer each month for usage, but also the revenue generated from incoming calls, payable within the regulatory interconnection regime.
This provides the company a granular view at a per user or unit basis and allows it to track revenue sources and growth
There is a trend by telecommunications and Internet companies and their suppliers to sell extra services to users and a lot of the promotion that is used by these companies talks of increased ARPU for these operators. It typically manifests in the form of value-added extra services such as entertainment being sold to customers especially in markets where the primary service offered to the customer, such as the telephony or Internet service, is sold at a commodity rate.
A related (but less used) acronym is AMPU, for average margin per user.
ARPU is widely used by Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) service providers”
